Tony....the truth is you now see the value of your past efforts. You are a shaker and a mover. You organize things. Given your recently busy schedule it is the natural order of things that folks just hang out....the guys on this thread will get up and go...the others may need a bit more inspiration... but we WILL SHAKE THEM UP TOGETHER TONY !!

Pat....I go to the cabin whenever I can mostly with the wife for a few days of absolute privacy and relaxation. Then there are those times when I go up work outside until late afternoon and consume "conehead" quantities of liquids ! Why ?? Because I can !! So...I am available that weekend or any other for boys night out. You guys say the word and I'll set it up.
No problemo.....just BYOB and BYOC (Cigars) ! It's 3.5 hrs to the house.

SO ??? Where the heck are the racers ? Am I gonna get Line Lock installed for nothing ? Damn !!
BTW....Message to Vito and ...the rest of us.....Steve's car rocks.

Default I'm RACING just to get "even" with my wheel barrel.

This clunker wheel barrel of mine is fighting me all the way. It's acting like a steer that knows he being loaded to go to the slaughter house. We pulled the manifold off on Saturday (5th time), since it was leaking like a stuck pig(again). While I had it off we wanted to change the restricters in the galley from .090' to .060's. to cut down on some of the oil going to the solid roller and gushing up into the rocker valleys (through push rod oiling). I'm blowing it out my breathers before it drains back down. In fact; I can blow the breather OFF the valve cover; been to that show too. Ricocheting around like a grenade under the hood. Ya think i got excessive crank case pressure??? Anyway; we get everything accomplished including a clean drop of the manifold in place (with a disgustingly perfect bead) and go to button it up and the 2nd manifold bolt on the drivers side slowly goes round and round and round like Dean Martin's "Find a wheel". Anybody old enough to remember that? We step back and scratch our nuts to ponder..... Miraculously we scrounge up a stud, albeit "crooked"; throw it in and she "BITES". (We got 1 lousy "crooked" stud in the whole shop) Looks like hell sticking up 2 inches but at that point, I figure I'll shut up and take the pain, like I'm back in Vietnam. (I REALLLLY don't want to pull these heads before track day to put helicoils in..... please FE god, don't make me pull those lousy Edelbrock heads, which unlike Dart or BT's; don't come with helicoils installed). That would be good engineering and we couldn't handle that. But this wheel barrel of mine ain't done messing with us. We "gently" torque down the other side and the front passenger side bolt ALSO decides to join the party and go round and round and round (at 28lbs torque??). My side kick says: "partyyyys over". We do some more nut scratching and after some reflection; we pull a 1/2" longer factory bolt (with an ugly crown head) out of one of the FE's lying on the floor and IT bites too. Oh goody... we still got life in this SOB. We delicately torque it down and then back up reaaallllllll slow, just waiting for something to explode. She just sits there.... "quietly". Like my wife does when she's setting me up. We start her up..... and she actually runs .....but she runs cooolllllllll...... reaaaaal coooooooooollll, at 160 degrees for 20 minutes........ Sumpins WRONG; she ALWAYS runs hot.... plus we can't find ANYTHING leaking. This is an earth shattering event! Myyy wheel barrel ALWAAAAYS leaks somewhere or someplace. My frame will nevvvvvvvvrrrrrrr eveeerrrrrrrrr rust. I carry an extra quart of oil in the trunk just for f***king frame lube. I can lube my drive shaft yokes without ever touching them just by motor spray. Having said all this; if if don't rain...... I'M GOING RACING with a crooked stud; a castle head bolt mixed in with some ARP's and i'm bring duct tape too. Somebody better show up; preferrably with a vette. I want to live long enough to get even with my wheel barrel.

Bernie

Holy crap Bernie....you told me this same story a few weeks ago !
How many times does this have to happen ? Damn those FE's huh ? I had a 390/406 FE motor and every time I swapped the intake manifold all 16 push rods had to come out first !! Now I'm re-lashing valve rockers too? Uugh!
I guess leaks are an FE thing but what the heck is causing that pressure?
Did you install that 3rd breather on the rear as you said you'd do ?

I gotta believe you can helicoil those intake bolt holes without pulling the heads. It may just require alot of wiping down for duct tape and foil to mask off the area. BTW....Do EDL & ARP recommend 28#'s on those bolts ? That seems high for AL heads even with the ARP lube .

Keep the faith brother ! I glued 2 intake gaskets together to kill a chronic leak, the night before, just to make a track day...and she held up for a full day of pounding. I bet your intake will hold up to the task after a few heat cycles. From what I hear you've got one of the fastest cars around. We'd love to watch that auto trans leap off the line ! The Cobras are fast. The Vettes are fast. I just hope some little Honda doesn't blow by me down the stretch. God...I'd hate that !

Bernie
You can't be calling her a clunker, steer, pig, wheel barrell, let's face it they are a mistress.def:"something personified as female that rules or dominates". When you open the garage door greet her with it's a pleasure to see you again hope everything is ok. Otherwise she'll show you how fast she can screw up an ignition system, coil, fuel pump, alternator etc.etc. Well I got my tires, haven't had a chance to use the car due to the weather, maybe Sat. How many lbs. are you using on the street? Can't get to the track that date, throwing a suprise party for my sister. Maybe we'll get another date this year. Hope you get in the 10's I think you should have no problem. Oh yea don't forget the binding wire. Talk to you soon.

Statesboro Blues in the best concert stadium (lucky)!

Joe - Since install in April, I've stomped my MT DR's in 2nd gear ranges where the old BFG's had no chance. The MT's hook like mad.
You will love those tires ! 20-22 psi for around town and limited highway use. 15psi for the track.

Compy has researched the weather radar and reports all is clear for next ten days !!

BTW.....We will have company in the area on Saturday. Expect to see miles of bikes.

Hey Jamo:

When I was in the Corps they use to force us to tear down and reassemble our rifles blindfolded. I now think I can do it to the top end of my FE. It's getting to be a habit. I hope you're right about the heads. We were wondering whether we could put helicoils in without pulling the heads. The "shavings" aspect gives me the creeps. KC is the one that gave me torque specs and he said 30 to 35Lbs. I have it written in a torque log. I bugged him on Friday night (again) and he said it shouldn't have been too much. I think after 5 times the aluminum (without helicoils) just can't hold up. Even with the antisieze your still stressing the threads each time, in and out. The other thing we noticed is that I'm only grabbing 5/6 threads on the ARP's. They're 2 1/2" long. When I redo them I will measure the bolt hole and put the longest one's in that I can fit. Frankly; I just assumed they had helicoils. Aluminum blocks won't hold up without them, much less the heads. I'm going to do them all and be done with it. I did notice that the stock bolts out of an FE were longer. I put the rear breather back on the manifold, plus I put a 40 year old original FE PCV valve back on and I have a breather on the opposite valve cover. (The new PCV's valves and grommet fit sucked). It's ugly but it rattled, so it should work. I still got one hole available in a clutch. I'll see what happens when we drive it. That's if these monsoons ever quit. We haven't been able to get it back out on the street with all the rain and I'm trying to earn a living at the same time. I hope we didn't lose too many guys. If we did; let me know and maybe I can backfill with another Cobra. We need some representation.

Joe: If you had to put up with the debacles this beast has given me; you would call her a lot worse. She's pees on my foot while I'm being nice to her. I run 28lbs in the MT's on the street. I dropped them to 22 at the track, but my rims are a little oversized for the tires specifications. I'm too old to chance breaking a bead with low air pressure the first time out. (I think). Let me know how you make out with yours. Gotta go...

Bernie

Bernie....My Brodix heads are aluminum and have 2 helicoils. Three of my Holley carb bolt holes are helicoiled. S--t happens. I usually blame my wife by saying she interrupted me as I was torquing down but she just laughs at me.

Jam:

I'll be staying at a hotel in Pittsfield on Thursday night and will meet you guys at the track. It's too long a drive for me to go up Friday morning. Not sure what I'm doing Friday evening yet.

Guys.....Slight change for me. I am heading upstate Thursday
mid-afternoon. If anyone is interested in leaving a day earlier give me a shout.
Sorry.....I need the rest, plus the last 2 turns onto my property will require trailering pre-surveillance so we have no mishaps !

I will get a chance to hop into Compy's "favorite town" for food/supplies. Friday night, we'll have plenty of cold beers, soda, snacks, salads, hamburgers, chicken & hot dogs. Hey Master Chef Pat !
Can you handle a good old fashioned charcoal briquet grill ?
Yes...it requires charcoal lighting fluid.
No....you cannot "shoot it" until it bursts into flames !

Bernie.....If you would like to cancel your Thursday night Pittsfield arrangements give me a call at home this week. From what I see we can also work something out for Friday for you.

I have four 2-way radios I will leave with Joe L. or Billy at Nick's on Weds.
That should give you one per trailer, each having 2 mile range.
I hope to meet with your guys Friday morning around Exit 20-21.

Guys the date is still on I am glad to report. The only problem that has reared it's ugly head ( I am sorry to report) is there is a an elevated increase in patrols for this week on the New York State thruway. It has been confirmed that a large contingent of alleged pedophiles with ties to Osama Bin Laden and financed by the Columbian drug cartels are headed for the Albany area the same time we are. They have been described as single white males driving mass produced GM products disguised as performance cars. They may try and pass themselves off as one of us. It is my sworn duty to share this information and description of the individuals with the proper authorities. If perchance you are stopped by the law enforcement I have arranged a secret series of recognition motions for you to make with them inorder to let them know you are with us(the good guys). Upon stopping for the officer you should exit your car quickly while waving your hands in an erractic manner and scream "allah Akbar " at the top of your lungs. Remember to charge at the officer and reach inside your waistband as you do. This should take care of eveything.

If you are driving a Cobra there won't be a problem because everyone know only manly men can drive them! They could never be confused with an alleged sports car that has rain sensing windshield wipers and a navigation system.

the preceding diatribe has been brought to you by Long Island Cobra He Man I A'int Driving No Chevy Women haters Club of New York.
