This isn't a big deal and I truly understand why, but it still sucks compliments of the idiot terrorists from 9/11.

If any of you have toured the internal workings of a hydro-electric dam, it's pretty cool. My dad took us to one as kids. I wanted to take my son and daughter to visit Kentucky dam while we were at the in-laws over Christmas, but as of 9/11 TVA no longer allows tours of any of their dams inner workings.

You know this kind of report makes me question anew WHY we are in Afghanistan? OK, the theory is to route out Al Queda, with the Taliban being secondary but an intimate part of the Al Queda equation.

There are a small number of Al Queda in that region, just over a 100 or so it is estimated. They train in the "region", Afghan AND Pakistan. Theory is we shut them down so they can't hurt us. OK we shut down THAT region, they move to the Phillipines, Africa and any number of other locales. The Muslim population is HUGE and covers the WORLD. I'm thinking were trying to put out "spot fires" that WILL keep breaking out here and there and in the end there is little we can do about it.

Look at the numbers again. 100 Al Queda, 50,000 US troops, still can't get-r-done. I'm not saying we should pull out all together, but I sure as hell wonder if were just gonna spin our wheels there until we move to the next place and start over! Nuke and Pave? OK, we'll need more bombs, LOT'S more bombs, the basturds are everywhere. Like a ant nest.

Protect our borders, circle the wagons, in the end, may be the only real solution left.

My father was a foreman for M&K Construction and all through my high school years and later I worked on some big dam jobs, so I am well aware of the internal workings of many dams. There are galleys in Shasta Dam that even the tour guides and the so called security people over here don't know about. Only a few people know all of the galleys and inspection places in major dams such as Hoover and others. They could not haul enough explosives on top of Shasta Dam to do anything but maybe collapse the roadway above the spillway. To actually cause the dam to fail they would have to be placed at strategic points deep inside. The real weak point of most dams is the power houses. They can be taken out with shoulder fired rockets from long distances. But terrorists are more interested in mass casualties than actual targets that are of military use.

I agree to a point...this war can't be won from the traditional sense. But, as long as we're in their backyard they have focused their energy on us there. If we pull out, then it opens up their resources to be used for another 9/11. Also, to leave would be a huge victory for those we've been keeping busy making roadside bombs in Iraq (ie Iran). If we adopt the pre-WW2 attitude of avoiding the fight, the ant's nest gets so big you're stuck establishing new beachheads, new airbases, ect when the problem gets out of control. The only question becomes how long can we afford this war(s)? We could easily become like the 'ol Soviets in Afgan.

I fear Iran, they've got nothing to loose...and are making great steps in being the major force in the Gulf who also happens to not like us.

I believe Iran's moving to take that oil well was just a test to see how we and the world would react. It had no real value military or otherwise. I also fear that once they develop a nuclear bomb, they will use it. And they have shown they now have a delivery system. The one thing that may slow them down is downsizing the nuclear devices to a small enough physical size for their missiles to haul. But that won't take long once they develop them. North Korea is another spot that worries me. I just hope the current administration doesn't go running over there to give them more money like they did earlier. They just use it to develop their nuclear program.

Well it sounds like Obama may have a reasonable plan to finish up Afghan in some way, some how. Surge followed by a review, possible withdrawal time table based on the results. Like knowing when to throw in the towel or keep fighting. Cost is a HUGE factor, we simply cannot afford to be there to "help out" the poor Afghan's, bless their heart. But there's plenty of countries around the world that "need help", we can't help them all. We need to be in a foreign country for a specific reason OTHER THAN to help them get a better standard of living. Now if that's what it takes to get the Afghan's to "fight" for themselves, then OK, that might be a reasonable approach toward winning the war. All though the term "win" might need a better definition these days.

Recent developments indicate N.K. is really feeling the heat from the latest round of sanctions. IF they fall in line with what the WORLD wants I can see providing for them in a financial way. Classic carrot and a stick principle. Carrot didn't work, were now using the stick, back to the carrot when the time is right.
