This is a new TV show that I just watched on the History channel and I think it is very good. None of the blaming one thing for the demise of the human race. It is set starting Jan.1, 1009 and I feel is a very good presentation of what we can expect in the way of water, food, and other rationing. It talks some about Global Warming but it is not a big subject in the show. Really gives a person, especially young ones something to think about. No water, no food, farm lands being paved over to accommodate the increased populations, and many other factors.

sounds good, i just watched part of planet of the apes which was set in 23**, and i feel this is something to look forward to also. scared the crap out of me when i was a kid though.

I liked this show because it never focused on one thing like most of them tend to do. They had scientists and geologists and they pretty much covered all aspects of what is going on, not Global Warming is the cause, Cars are the cause. and etc. Their main focus seemed to be on the fact the Global Warming and other gloom and doom experts are ignoring the real problems which are dependency on oil, huge population growths, less water, and less agricultural land because of paving it over to build on.That I have seen around here as we used to have a lot of ranches and such that raised grain for their cattle and to sell and now we have none. Even the 3 dairies that used to be here have been gone for years as they used the land to build on. Maybe Ernie was wrong that the mom and pop farms will never come back. Not to feed the nation but to feed their families.

Oh I think those Mom and Pop "farms" ARE coming back, but in very limited numbers, the "survivors" if you would. The popultion is to large, the land and water to scarce, the cities to big for us, as a country, to go back to that.

Those who can mostly sustain their own living will be the "new rich". The question is, will they be able to hold onto it when the city folk find them?

That is what we need in this area but unfortunately half of the people are dealing in dope of one kind or another and would never go for extra patrols. They even complained about the regular patrols driving through here more than twice a day as they felt it was infringing on their rights. And the city is to afraid to enforce any of the ordinances against them.

Ernie, it is a topic of discussion every-once-in-a-while.

We have enough land that we could grow enough food for our family and possibly sell a little.

My fear would be that it all breaks down and those that have will become victims of those that have-not.



BTW, this was a great show, we watched it twice.

That will be the problem in the long run, no doubt about it. In the short run, like NOW, for some folks, it is a viable alternative.

To really pull off a near self sustaining life style you need to also figure out how to preserve the food through the winter. Canning, drying, cold storage without electricity, etc. Your diet may be quite limited, lot's potatos if your Irish for instance. It's not a fun lifestyle, hard work, meager rations, long hours, but it is a survivable lifestyle.

I was surprised to see how many were living "off the grid" in Northern California while I was there recently. I was basically "holed up" in a small travel trailor and my 14' Box Van for a "shop". During that interesting time I learned a LOT about how to do it. I'm finding the same thing here in Oregon is pretty common as well, folks living "off the grid".

While it was educational, I was sure happy when my house closed and I got electric heat, internet, TV. Yeah, I'm pretty spoiled!

I guess we had better enjoy it now. According to the experts the Earth is going to end, or not, in 2012. Maybe if the wonderful things happen in 2010 that can be avoided. The 2100 show was still very good and more likely than most of the self proclaimed experts who are interpreting everything the way they want it to be. I even saw a show yesterday on AFTER the Apocalypse. I thought that was supposed to be the end.

Ernie, we can a lot of food...including meat based food. Our problem is harvest and man power. Two years ago, I invited a friend over to help can tomatoes. We worked all day to get the quarts we ended up with on the shelf.

I do not know if we are just more picky, or if we are just slow, but for us it takes time.

We do a deer, with grinding, in 6 to 8 hours. Time is the one thing that challenges a household with being more self-sufficient.

I doubt if you are just slow. I remember my Mother and Grandmother working for several days when I was a kid canning various vegetables and stuff from the garden and them preparing meat for the smoke house. Grandad had built an old smoke house that he had meat hangers in and they would use tubs of hickory chips to smolder and smoke the hams, and other meat. Those hams were some of the best that I ever tasted.

How can our economy come back when the oil barons are waiting in the wings? Every up tick in the stock market only raises gas prices. Opinion only, but my belief is that $4.00 gas is what caused our break down. Not the foreclosures, high fuel costs raised the cost of living so high. People at the lower end could not meet their mortgage payments.

Good point Tru, daybreak to sunset as I recall. No way we could harvest the hay for the cows without the neighbors help, for instance. It was common practice to pool resources and man power in those days.

I helped dig the "root cellar", by hand, pick, shovel, wheel barrow, after school. Oh man I hated coming home during that time! It's still there, stays remarkably cool even in the summer.

We would set out salt licks for the cows AND the deer so we wouldn't have to go to far to get meat. They came to us.

I saw that same show and it seemed to me that a lot of it was common sense, but I guess that is why I have the tag line I do.

I thought it was one of the best planned and executed shows on what could happen that I have seen. They pretty well aid out everything that could happen if things don't change, and I don't mean the Obama changes.

Other then that it was good.
