Well, voting was interesting. The most interesting thing was talking to the other folks in line. My town is a good mix of people from a variety of backgrounds. I happened to be in line with a couple of guys (probably union) who were die-hard Dems who said they were going to vote for Brown. Also a stay at home mum who was undecided who was leaning Coakley, but thought Brown seemed more honest.

However, I really think that Brown might end up being a one term deal unless he shows that he can not go all ultra right wing. The people I talked to were not voting for Brown so much as voting against the health care bill or against Coakley. They also did not like all the negative ads run by Coakley - one of them even said (with nods of agreement from 3 others) that her negative ads were what they usually expect to see from Republicans - something for you party bosses to take note of.

I was also talking to a few of the guys I work with and one of them had read a breakdown of the differences between Brown and Coakley and he was surprised to find that Brown rated more favourably to him than he had expected.

I really think Brown has a better than decent shot at this. Even if Brown does not win the DNC better take a lesson from the close shot across the bow - even solid blue stae MA will only be solid only as long as you don't go doing something stupid.

Brown may end up being one term; the point of this election is not really about Brown; it is, in large part, a referendum on Obama and the current HealthCare reform proposal. No matter what happens in this election, it is clear that in a state that Obama carried by 26 or so points just last year, that is no longer even close to the case. His presidency is not popular with any faction that voted for him, including the far left.

The people have spoken in Virginia and New Jersey, and now (even in the bluest of blue) in Massachusetts. Even if Brown doesn't win, the message is being sent; to the extent that the message gets ignored by Obama, his presidency will decline further. If he chooses to listen, it will get better for his presidency but it will be bad for his ideology. What to do?

Saw a piece on Fox. The one guy who worked for Fox talked how incumbents are being voted out at a higher rate. This includes both parties. The Dems just have more at stake now. This will be the best thing that could happen, and send a message to the whole mess in DC!

Steve,

I hope that Brown wins and I also hope that he doesn't go to the far right as we have enough extremists on both sides. They need to work together and do what is good for the country and forget what is best for the parties and themselves. As if that will ever happen.

If Brown wins and doesn't work HARD to cut Government spending, he should get voted out. Along with ALL incumbents that do not work hard to cut the Government back down to the peoples representatives. A Government and a PEOPLE that have to live within their means!

Ron, yep, but I think we might be starting to see voters pay more attention to that sort of thing.

Dan, yep, but spending has not always been a priority. Other litmus test issues usually take precedence.

It would be tough to get elected in MA if you were not pro-choice. Brown is not (Romney flip-flopped after getting elected), and he is also against gay marriage, but those issues now take a backseat to the fiscal ones. Bloody well about time.

Dan40,

Absolutely agree with you. (I was responding to VRM's comment about Brown being a one termer if he goes too far right. I said that this election is not really about Brown as much as it is a national referendum.)

I have a hard time believing that this Liberal Progressive State is going to change it's sexist stripes and elect a women to the U.S. Senate.

There are lots of priorities, some like crumbling infrastructure conflict with deep spending cuts.
The war against terrorists is also a priority and conflicts with spending cuts as well.
Health care INSURANCE should be about 250 places down the list, or just cut out all but catastrophic coverage and get it off the list entirely.

At the top of the list IS the fact that we have already spent 12 trillion we didn't have and we have committed to spending over 100 TRILLION that we don't have and won't get. The 'dirty little secret' staring us all in the face is that we are fiscally bankrupt now. And the something for nothing crowd makes us very near morally bankrupt too.
This is not obummers fault, but he is the dealer in charge now and is contributing to the ongoing addiction. The problem lays at the feet of politicians of all parties, buying votwes with giveaways to to whomever will take them in exchange for their vote.

We are broke now and maybe it is already too late to start digging out of this hole. And the longer we wait to start the harder it will be to do and the less likely we will SURVIVE!! And No one will come rescue us, they'll just pick our bones.

We have met the enemy and he is us!

Imagine a man making $143,000.00 per year. He's doing OK. But what if he is past due on $126,000.00 in current bills and owes $1,060,000.00 in bills already contracted and need to be paid in future. And next year his income will go DOWN and his expenses will go UP. You might love him, you might pal around with him, but I doubt you'll be loaning any of your money.

Looks like Brown might take it. Anybody upset/excited about the possibilities? My guess is that Pelosi will want to toss out ALL negotiated terms since they recieved the bill from the Senate. Then, it would simply go to Obama's desk for signing.

Thats gonna go over like a rock.

I think she has already made it clear that is one option, of several. But I've always suspected the bill is to divisive for the Demo's to get it all the way to Obama. Even if Coakley wins there is still a question of whether or not it will ultimately pass and if so, what else will be dropped from it? It's been gutted a lot already.

Coakley screwed this pooch from a long distance...too reliant on an election as formality with Kennedy blessings and didn't know that Brown came to play...
I just hope that the country as a whole is waking up to stop the slide. Time has come that 'Democrat' or 'Republican' should be eradicated from the lexicon and replaced by 'American'.

AP just projected that Brown has won (with 75% of votes in).

How do you like them apples, Ernie?
