New Rule on Guns in Parks Takes Effect Feb.22
Finally Finally !
On February 22, a new law on guns in national parks takes effect. The law repeals a National Park Service rule that has long prohibited Americans from lawfully possessing firearms in national parks for self-defense.
The new law, passed last spring by an overwhelming bipartisan vote in the U.S. Senate, will allow people to possess, carry and transport firearms in national parks, in accordance with state law.
However, many details remain to be worked out. Reports indicate that National Park Service officials are debating issues such as the definition of “federal facilities,” where firearms will remain prohibited under a different federal law.
NPS officials are expected to issue further information as February 22 approaches, and some parks have already published information on their new policies. Because state laws vary greatly, before you visit a national park, you should check the park’s website or call the park headquarters for more information. NRA will also provide updates as they become available.

It won't be long until national forests are considered federal facilities. Crater Lake is the only National Park in Oregon, I have driven through there often with a pistol in my door pocket.
I WILL continue to do so...

That is sure good news, Fred, if not from a sudden full dawning that the bad guys count on unarmed citizens, at least a step in the right direction.
It won't be really right until one can obtain a federal concealed carry permit, good anywhere. I am reluctant to take a protective weapon with me on vacation because of that. I believe some states allow a weapon to be carried in a camper, as though it is your home, but not all. Trouble is, I don't drag my heavy-azz camper cross country.
Maybe I need a very small folding tent instead of a gun case. The trouble with that is the camper normally has to be connectable to power with its own restroom facilities. So how about a very small tent with an electric heating pad, diaper, pistol and ammo in it, all under the seat?
Scott I, at one time, carried an old sawed off shotgun under my truck seat, but don't anymore. Certainly did carry other weapons that might have resulted in more than a frown at times. Now I'm concerned that, under some conditions, carrying might be considered a felony. In that case I might lose the right to possess at all. Probably an unfounded fear, but law is so nuts lately. I feel if I'm stopped by LEO, I have to inform him out of courtesy or have weapons in plain sight. But if there is any question to legality, I don't want to get caught either. It's a dilema.
Trust in God but lock your doors and carry.
Wes

There should be no need for a permit, period.
Firearms safety training should be part of basic education like it is in the military. Your average gun-wielding thug has likely had no training, so it mostly boils down to who has the guts to pull the trigger. Panic will negate any training.
Any LEO assumes your armed from the get-go so what difference does it make, you get pulled over for a brake light and the first thing they do is run your ID through NCIC...
I like Ted Nugent's opinion: "The second ammendment is my concealed weapons permit!"

Hey Fellas, I've had quite a bit of experience here. My family has owned a gun shop for over 37 years, and I've carried a handgun since I was 18 (before the federal law was changed to 21). State laws can vary dramatically from one to another and counties within the state can have there own version as well. Carry permits in the state of Alabama are for "concealed weapons" and there are other states that require it to be "in plan sight". My dad went on a hunt in southern Texas and the Sheriff was happy to honor his carry permit but he had to wear his pistol in an exterior holster. Most permits have "Reciprocity States" listed on the back. However, my experience has found that information can be outdated or misinterpreted. My suggestion is to first go to your states website and look up the Reciprocity States from there...then go to the state in question and verify the information. I do try my best to educate myself and follow these laws but personally...I'd rather be caught with it, than without it. ![Smilie](http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif) ~G
P.S. Nugent for President!
