Tanner Foust Street Drift: Mulholland
I'm not really into drifting, but this was pretty cool. They closed down Mulholland Drive and Tanner Foust takes a Scion that has a 600 hp TRD engine for rip through a 2 mile stretch.

I guess I'm just getting to be an old cranky bastard, remembering the good old days........I just don't get the whole point of this "drifting" craze. Apparently it's better to be going as sideways as possible rather than going as fast as possible? It all looks like a waste of some perfectly good time and tires to me. Then again, that's just me.........  |

It is pretty strange. Scion, who makes a front wheel drive car, converts their car to rear wheel drive and replaces the motor with a V8. A tire company sponsors the thing, only to show a car totally destroying a set of tires over a 2 miles stretch.

While I cannot say that I get the point of drifting, I do appreciate the skill required to pull this off. They must have rather interesting progressive throttle linkage to get that kind of controlled tire spin. Does anyone know how that hand brake is set up? Is that just for the front wheels? What other modifications are made to these cars to be able to keep them (more or less) under control?
I also think that it is rather strange that they take an econobox front wheel drive vehicle and make it into a 600hp V8 rear wheel drive drift car.

I agree on the drifting comments, but I also do respect the car control. To me though, it seems more difficult to control on dirt with less horsepower, as you can quickly get some traction back on pavement if needed if you go too far. Dirt takes a lot longer. We used to do that kind of stuff on dirt roads as kids and it was a blast.

What would be really interesting is to set up a timed run comparison.
Send a drift car on just such a stretch of road and see how long it takes to complete the run. Next send some sort of prepped road car and see just how much faster the road car is compared to the drift car.

I will have to look for it, but it was done by some drifters to prove their point of view. Time on the Drift car was faster, but it was not a fair comparison. The drift car had more than 2X the horsepower and torque and was overall a faster car. Plus the same driver ran it, and it looked to me like he was taking it easy on the corners in the road race car.

I looked on YouTube but no dice. I don't remember where I saw it, may have even been on TV. It really looked like it was setup to be sure the drift car made the course faster. instead of an equal comparison. I would like to see a comparison of a drift car raced by a drifter then a road racer. Then a road race car raced by a drifter and a road racer. Same car done by 2 different drivers and do an average of multiple runs in each test. Most fair way to do it in my opinion.
