Earnhardt to Honor His Father
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Dale Earnhardt Jr. said he knew some fans were upset by his plan to drive a replica of his father’s No. 3 car at Daytona in July, but he thought it was a fitting way to honor his father, a seven-time Daytona champion, at the Nascar Hall of Fame induction. “I think everybody knows I’m pretty careful about all that kind of stuff,” Earnhardt said Friday at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway. “It just seems like a reasonable opportunity and it seemed like if there is a time to ever do it, this is one of those times.”
Earnhardt announced his plan Thursday to drive the Wrangler car in the Nationwide Series race at Daytona. The announcement came on what would have been his father’s 59th birthday. Dale Earnhardt died in a crash in the season-opening Daytona 500 in 2001.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. will drive a No. 3 Wrangler-sponsored, yellow-and-blue Chevrolet in the Subway Nationwide Series 250 at Daytona Beach in July. Earnhardt Jr. and longtime friend and engine-provider Richard Childress (who won six Cups with Dale Earnhardt) hoped to keep the announcement secret until a media unveiling next week, but Darrell Waltrip leaked it out Friday on Twitter. It'll mark only the second time Earnhardt Jr. has raced No. 3, which his father and Childress made famous throughout the '80s and '90s. (He won the '02 Nationwide race in Daytona Beach, almost a year to the day after his father died.) Since Earnhardt's death in the 2001 Daytona 500, many fans have pleaded with his son to use No. 3, which actually belongs to NASCAR "on loan" to Richard Childress Racing.
