CA Increasing Fuel Tax
I just found out CA. Is increasing the fuel excise tax on diesel by 17.3 cents a gallon next july. Those of us with diesel tow vehicles are getting screwed. At least my diesel car does not use much fuel (still adds about 2 bucks a tank). ![Mad](http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/images/smilies/mad.gif)

My neighbor who has a 2006 diesel 3/4 ton pick up got a notice from the state that he had to take it in to have it smogged. He called them and they told him yes, he had to take it to a smog station and have it checked. When he got back I asked him what they could check as they have no tail pipe standards for that pick up. He said they spent about 3 minutes looking under the hood, charged him the regular price for smogging a car and gave him a smog passed certificate to send in. Everything is about money now it seems, not about if it will do any good or not.

That's crazy. I will register mine in Arizona if I get a notice to smog it.

Well so far as I could tell, they were more interested in the money than any smog check. It has no smog equipment on it and never did have and that 3 minutes looking under the hood was a joke from what he said. He did say they had asked him if he had changed the chip in the computer and he told them no, it was the one that came in it. But he said they never locked to see if it was.

Hmmm, I have a chip in mine but it is easy to switch back to factory settings. California nickel and diming everyone to death...

I don't know what the chips cost, but I got the impression that my neighbor had priced changing his and a new one that would add a pretty good jump in power was pretty expensive if what he said was correct. Any way he said they never looked at it, just asked him if he had changed it. But that may change soon as he told me the guy said he was waiting for papers that would identify all the different chips that were in different diesel trucks and cars. That and looking at the exhaust system is pretty much all they can do for now. But I would expect the fines to be huge if and when they get this organized.

I have a tuner that flashes the computer, so it is not hard mounted. You just re-flash back to stock when needed. Most people with chips on diesels I know also have some type of exhaust upgrades as well. I have taken two other vehicles to Arizona, looks like it might end up being three some day.

I must have misunderstood him about the chip then. I was sure he said that his was a pull out and plug in type. As for the exhaust, several people around here have had theirs changed out and are now worried that they may have to go pay to have them changed back to the original style. And a bunch of the ricer cars are going to be in for a shock too as nearly all of them have changed the chips and exhausts to get more power and now they say they are going to include that in the smog test. No matter if it passes the tailpipe test, if anything has been modified or changed they will get a gross polluter ticket and have to go to the referee.
Now keep in mind that this later part about the ricer cars I just heard from one of the younger guys that has one and has changed about everything on it but the body, so that part could be wrong. He said he had the car smogged before and they never said anything. But he heard from a friend that this year it would be different. Could be true and could be just another rumor.

I guess you could take out the chip (or re-flash to stock) and hope the don't look at the exhaust. I don't think I have ever had the smog check places look under the car. It's nice not having to worry about this stuff in AZ.

Yes, you could change the chip back, but they do look at the exhaust system here in this area. They failed one guy with his car because he had an after market distributor. It passed the tail pipe test great but they told him he had to put the original distributor back in. The original one had broken and he took it in and showed it to them and they still refused to pass him until he got one that said Chevy on it. After he got the one they wanted the car still passed but at almost double the emissions it had the first time. Really shows how concerned they are about this crap doesn't it. I think this area here is one of the worst, if not the worst in the whole state.

David,
I am not sure just what it is now since they raised it last year. I will check with one of the people down at the service station and see what it is now. Gas costs so much any more that I don't even look at the pump when I have to fill up. I just hand them my monthly check and if there is any left they give it back to me.

Starting July 2011 state excise tax will be 35.3 cents a gallon, federal excise tax will be 24.4 cents per gallon, then add state sales tax on top of that. where I live that is another 8.75% per gallon. This is on diesel. ![Mad](http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/images/smilies/mad.gif)

We pay 38 cents a gallon for both state AND federal excise tax, local sales tax is figured in the price at the pump.....
BTW: Today in town, I paid $2.62 for 87 octane......been bewteen that and $2.70 for some time now.......
You'll need to start drilling of the coast for your own oil, but with the fiasco in the gulf here, that may not happen anytime soon!!!!!!!!!

Arnold and the rest of the libs are against drilling, so I don't see that happening. Regular around here has been about $3.10-$3.20. When I go to AZ it is usually about 50 cent less a gallon. I have a friend that goes to AZ every couple weeks like I do, and he bought a 50 gallon tank for the bed of his truck for diesel.

I can kinda understand the high price of gas/diesel in California, considering where it has to come from to get to you'll..........what I can't understand is here in Louisiana, we have oil wells as close as a mile from my home and the nearest refinery is is about 70 miles away, with all that, we should be paying $1.50 a gallon for gas, IMHO of course!!!!!!!!!!!
At one time, we had over a dozen refinerys in the state, right now we have 6 or 7......and one is down for a total rebuild, not scheduled to go back online for another year or two, but when they do go back online, there are supposed to be able to triple their output.......

David,
I did check with my friend and the above stated prices are what he told me. But so far as you living right next to the oil wells and should get it cheaper, I live 7 miles from Shasta Lake and our water rates are higher than many places far from any water supply. Also several years ago a friend of mine that owned a boat shop here used a lot of top grade plywood and we had a mill in Anderson, about 15 miles South of here. He used to go to Los Angles to get parts and was looking at their plywood and it was made in Anderson and he could buy it there for about 1/2 of what they charged him here at the mill. So he started hauling a big load back every month when he made his monthly trip down there. So living close to a supply of anything doesn't mean you are going to get it cheaper.
