Default Any saltwater aquarium experts out there?? What is it??

Hey, I need an answer form one of you salt water aquarium owners out there.....I have a critter in my tank that I didn't put in there???? Unless the thing is actually a hermit crab escaped from his shell, but I don't think so. It looks like a minature lobster. Sorry, the picture is not the best but it is the best I could do......he hides under the rocks and only comes out when you put food in the tank....he kind of hangs around with green gobi that I have in the tank.....I swear, I did not "knowlingly" put him in the tank, unless he was hiding in one of the pieces of live rock???????

Default Careful

your picture really doesn't show it well but the description sounds a lot like a Mantis Shrimp.

Careful, if that is what it is, they are bad news. larger ones have been known to be strong enough with their claw to break the tank glass

They are often hitchhikers on the live rock

Paul

I can't tell for sure because of the picture quality, but it definitely looks like some type of shrimp, possible a mantis shrimp. Typically you are supposed to quarantine your live rocks in a separate tank for awhile to ensure there are no "hitchikers" like this. Be thankful it is not a fire worm, which will eat your expensive live rock. Check with your local shop or one of the mail order warehouses, I believe they have traps for them.

Not 100% certain, but the critter in the picture looks more like a pistol shrimp. Plenty of info about them on the net.

Yep, it turns out he is probably a pistol shrimp, according to the store where I buy my stock. After looking it up on the net he behaves like a Pistol shrimp.
