The Gumball Rally
Just got around to watching this movie; haven't seen it since the 70s.
Now that I've got the Cobra sickness, it's taken on a new meaning.
I'm sure there were multiple Cobras in the movie, I guess they weren't nearly as valuable in '76. Toward the end of the movie, when they're racing down the LA river, there's one shot where the Cobra has a smashed in front end and it's clear that the body is aluminum. In the next scene though, the damage has been miraculously repaired.
Still trying to figure out how the car is configured. Not too many good shots of the dash panel but it appears to be the street version, with the five smaller gauges in one cluster. And there are multiple shots of the reverse-winding speedometer (I thought that was a feature of the race versions?).
The car has a scoop that's faired into the hood, there are no rivets. And there are also two vents toward the back of the hood, near the cowling, that remind me of ones I've seen on a FIA car. But these are rectangular, not rounded.
There are a couple shots of the engine, couldn't quite see the carb setup but the valve covers are ribbed and say Cobra 427.
The car has a bumper and overriders in the rear, but only overriders in the front with aftermarket fog lights (same as the Ferrari, is this perhaps product placement?). And sidepipes.
The wheels are Halibrands, not the sunbursts.
So perhaps this car (these cars) are street versions, maybe with a 428? Or some combination? I'm sure this has already been thought through by other people, but I'm just getting around to it now.
