Since I bought the Corvette for my daily driver, I also joined a Corvette forum.
Needless to say, this video is generating a lot of discussion over there. For the most part they are condemming the drivers for racing on the street. The discussion regarding the use of traction control is also very interesting. I'm amazed at the number of members that depend on the electronics to save their butts in situations like that. The throttle is an On/Off switch and let the car handle everything else. Would not do well in a Cobra would they.

The thing about street racing is you don't have to be bad at controlling your car to have bad things happen. The other driver or an incidental third party can cause it all to unravel, as the previous video and this story in today's local paper points out: click here.

Yet another case of someone turning left in front of someone else.Even though that someone else was wrong in street racing.
"The Bindi’s were westbound on Highway 98 and trying to make a left turn onto Twin Pine Boulevard when the right side of their vehicle collided with the left side of a Ford Mustang driven by Pensacola resident Logan B. Drinkard, 21.
Drinkard was eastbound and, according to several witnesses, speeding as he raced another vehicle, the report said.
The impact spun the Toyota Camry around in a counter clockwise direction and sent the Mustang off the roadway where it struck a stop sign."

Fred,
I'm reminded of the accident that killed James Dean. It's speculated that the farmer who pulled in front of him was not accustomed to seeing very small cars going at high speeds and misjudged how much time he had to get across in front of Dean. You can say yesterday's accident was the old Toyota driver's fault, but a person would have to be pretty stupid or immature to street race when sharing the road with 70+ year old drivers. I suspect the jury will blame the racer far more than the old man who didn't recognize that an oncoming car was speeding and subsequently lost his wife.

Tommy,
There is no doubt in my mind that if that kid hadn't been speeding/racing the whole thing wouldn't have happened.
If he had been doing the speed limit and driving defensively all their heartache wouldn't be occurring .
Sorry situation.

Been there, almost done that.
Many years ago while driving my hi-po Mustang, I ended up in a line of slow moving traffic where there normally was never any traffic. This was on a secondary 2 lane highway. Being 20 something and in a big rush (for no other reason than I had a fast car) I pulled out into the passing lane and hammered it. Within a few seconds I was running through the gears and passing cars like they were standing still, actually they were standing still.
As I approached the head of this long line of cars, the car at the very front appeared to be lost and as I was getting close to him, he began to make a left hand turn in front of me. However, he wasn't really sure he was in the right place so he sort of stopped SIDEWAYS IN MY LANE. There was a child in the back seat and I could see him/her with his face glued to the window watching me bear down on them at a crazy speed. I jumped on the brakes as hard as I could and started running back down through the gears.
I was absolutely sure that I was going to T-bone that car. When I was only a few car lengths away from the impact, the driver of the next car in line must have looked in his mirror and saw me coming. He pulled off the pavement onto the shoulder giving me just enough room to get through. I somehow managed to get back on the gas, and blast through the opening. I don't think that I was ever so scared in all my life. If I had hit that car, I would have almost certainly killed that child.
So the moral of the story is that young guys driving high performance cars will do very stupid things.
Wayne

Wayne - reminds me of some of my stunts as a kid. Young guys do dumb things because they don't realize just how dumb they really are. I was lucky to survive my youth. Looking back at some things and remembering exactly what was going through my mind at the time just makes me shake my head!

There was a kid killed here street racing too just this past week. He hit 6 other cars but he was the only death. The car he was racing took off.
