Default New Gun Range Easton, PA

I went shooting at a relatively new gun range called Heritage Guild in Easton, PA. Nice facility and they rent handguns and rifles to test out.

Now I have the itch to buy and AR type rifle. There are so many different models and do you go with a S&W or Colt?

Anyone have a preference?

Cool range pay it a visit if you live in the area. (I have no affiliation with the range)

an AR by S&W? in any event i would stick with the colt, resale will be better.
just curious, how are you going to go about owning an AR in NJ? being a winchester 62a 22cal gallery gun is considered an assault rifle.....

You can't have a Colt. S & W is okay as is a Bushmaster.

For an AR-15 type weapon to be NJ-legal, it must meet the following criteria:

- NOT be stamped "AR-15" or "CAR-15" on the receiver
- Have a fixed buttstock
- Have either a target crown barrel, or a permanently-installed muzzle brake (not a flash suppressor) - the barrel can NOT be threaded
- Have no bayonet lug
- Have no grenade launcher (I'm not kidding - that's really documented)
- Have no magazines of greater than 15 round capacity

I need to move, NJ is so uptight when it comes to firearms. I obviously have a little more research and homework to do.

You should move to NC from B'Water just like I did. I can go buy any gun I want have a CC permit in a month and go out and shoot anybody I like just like the rest of the loonies in NC do.
You would not believe the number of shootings that go on in NC, makes Plainfield seem like a vacation paradise. And these are by law abiding citizens out in the country.
You are lucky in NJ that they have such tough gun laws, keeps the guns out of the hands of the wackos. (well most of the wackos)

Forget about flipping anybody off down here, that's asking to be target practice.

You are welcome to move to or visit Texas.

Just one word of warning though.
You will be met at the Texas border on any inbound road by a Texas Ranger. He will question you and your passengers extensively concerning the possession of any firearms on you or in your vehicle.
If he isn't satisfied with your answers,he will search every part of your vehicle and you.

If no firearms are found he will loan you a few until you are able to get to a gun shop or gun show.
He will usually have 10% off coupons available for Colts.

Hello, There are several clubs in that area that host rifle, pistol & shotgun events, some a 3 gun matches where you shoot all 3 guns in the match. Topton is close to allentown, there is a match almost every weekend and they have some great 3 gun events. Ontelaunee just north of Topton has almost every discipline possible including all the olympic style events. Palmyra near Hershey has the PSA SHOOTOUT every April and they will have 350+ shooters with over 650 guns shooting all reactive steel targets. Old Bridge in north jersey, Central Jersey club in the middle both have a list of pistol events.

You should visit the forums at Brian Enos - Competition Shooting Books, Slide-Glide, DVDs & Reloading and click on the 3 gun section and check the rifle page. The gun of choice is the AR15 set up for 3 gun practical shooting events, that will be low power optics, bipod, sling and a few other cool details. That will probably be what you are looking for, with all the correct items to comply with the peoples republic of NJ.

good luck, Karl @ GT Targets or Karl CSX2498

I'd recommend building your own AR. If you can build a Cobra, an AR will be really easy.
I bought a stripped Bushmaster lower receiver from a local gun dealer, and the rest through the mail.
The advantage is that it costs a lot less, and you can pick and choose just the options you want. I had trouble finding a factory built AR outfitted just the way I wanted.
Instructions on how to assemble one are on the net. I joined the forum AR15.com and got all the info I needed.
It took me about an hour and a half to build my first one.
Give it a shot (pun intended) - you'll have fun, know exactly how your rifle is put together, and save a couple hundred dollars to boot!

I purchased a Sig556 a few years ago. Awesome weapon! I recommend you check them out and they do build models to meet the requirements of just about any state. To that point, it is bizarre to me that each state can specify limits on gun configurations. As a lifetime member of the NRA and CCW permit holder in several states (not reciprocity), I urge everyone to support the national right to carry bill. I know it won't address this issue completely, but it is one step closer. Okay, rant over. Get out there and shoot some of these before you make your decision. You will be amazed at how different AR weapons can feel and shoot.

Finally picked up a basic entry level S&W AR. I was somewhat limited as to the options because of the uptight gun laws in NJ.

I was thinking of picking up one of those red dot sights and there are a ton out there at all different price ranges Anyone have a favorite?

Hoping to lock and load next weekend.

AS aformer gunsmith and avid shooter, I would first ask you, what is the intended use? then make a more educated decision, for you will get the itch even more when you see other rifles and firearms that you want to get. Believe me when you get the itch it is like a Cobra itch. One of the best rifles AR types is the Colt AR-15, if you wat ot go up a few notches then go to Sprinfield MIA (while a full battle rifle) the quality and accuracy are tops. Let me know if I can help further.
Happy shooting

BAsque1

Basically I will be just shooting paper targets for fun at the range now and again and if history proves anything I will get board with the gun and it will sit in my safe until I buy another gun to keep the excitement going. This is why I purchased a basic entry level gun. If it turns out differently then I see how easily you can go over the top and start building your own and/or customizing.

For now I am just happy to own one and shoot at the indoor range from time to time.

From what I have learned in NJ I am limited to one "deadly" item on the gun for lack of a better word. This means 10 round mag, no flash suppressor, fixed stock, no bayonet mount. It's ridiculous! A gun with a 10 round mag and fixed stock kills the same as a 30'round mag with an adjustable stock.

I'm probably looking to spend about $200 for a basic scope. I feel spending more at this time would be a waste based on the frequency I will use it and considering I will probably only be using it indoors. If things change I can always upgrade.

The aim point scopes look awesome but don't think I want to spend that much right now unless I can be convinced otherwise.

Thanks for any help suggestions. The expertise of our cobra group is amazing!

Jams:
Sounds sensible, I know the feeling of having too many toys and no time to play with them LOL. I have spent morte time playing with thye Cobra than anythingt else, with the execption of my Masonic responsibilities. Any time you need some advise regarding firearms let me know. Its funny your statement about the "deadly " item I said thye same thing to an antigunner " have you thought how many people a car can kill if driven into a group of people?" and he looked at me as if I had 5 heads . He said that's crazy!!, not any more than shooting people, it is just thye way you do it, still a crime. He still looked bedazzled. My final question to him was Are car being banned for this possibility?
Stay well my friend

Hey, Look at the CMore sights, railway with a 4 or 6 moa dot. I have the Leupold CQT 1x3 on my ar but that is outside your budget and it is old and has been replaced by newer more expensive optics.
good luck, karl

check out the schedule for Topton F&G Assn. they have several rifle matches during the year and several multi gun events. pistol/rifle, pistol/shotgun, a lot of fun. Or Old Bridge Club in north jersey, they have several matches worth your time too.

Thanks Lou

Those conversations with anti gun folks are always interesting to say the least.
