Volkswagen!!
Hey you guys in America...what's going on over there with Volkswagen and exhaust emissions? How many cars are involved? What's the potential damage to Volkswagen?
Cheers,
Glen

So here is a historically accurate depiction of what the board meeting room was like when word first broke about the scandal to Chairman Hitler of Volkswagen... https://youtu.be/dKef1JFpiCA

Hard to comprehend how big (ie expensive) this is going to be for VW!
I had an Audi 10 years ago and I sold it after six months because things kept going wrong with it and the dealer's interest level was sub-zero.
I had a Golf 30 years ago. The body was good and solid, the mechanicals were....sub-zero.
I didn't think VW's integrity level was this low and their arrogance was this high though.

Glen

Perhaps you should learn more and opine less . Besides, everybody knows the lousy cars get culled and sent there.

Probably a good time to get a deal on a VW....if you want one.

With the exception of the Touareg, sales of new diesel VWs are frozen for now, but I'd buy a used 1999-2004.5 Jetta or 4 door Golf if the price was right, for the sole purpose of converting it into a pickup. See https://www.facebook.com/SmythPerformance?fref=ts
OTOH, gasoline VWs are not affected by this, though VW dealers may get more aggressive on deals in order to keep their doors open, now that much of their diesel business has been taken away - at least for a while.

You're not missing anything. It was a discourteous and uncalled for response.

The older rear engine ones were great. Specially on a bonfire. Blocks were magnesium. I had to put a car out using sand. Lucky it caught fire next to a building site.

Really, so complaining about a 30 freaking year old golf adds to the discussion how, precisely?

Yikes, mate! Settle down.
So what about the 11 million cars world wide, and the 90k here in Australia? Is there any reason that those current owners shouldn't be somewhat cheesed off by VAG's totally illegal activities?
Cheers

If I was VW, I would take them all back and sell them to a country where Euro 6 emission law is not required. That way the world is kept clean... Or tell the current owners to drive slower to reduce emissions.
Am I sarcasic? Yes, because I don't believe in global warming - oups, sorry, global climate change. - Or, what is it called now?
Was VW lying and cheating? Yes.
Who informed the EPA? Maybe Piech, after he couldn't get rid of Winterkorn earlier this year and replace him with a person of his choice.
Piech already bought additional VW shares... Everybody should.

I'm perfectly settled. Is there some correlation to current owners relative to 30 year old golfs?

Well, I guarantee, given the punitive nature of regulators, this gets more expensive, with nasty news, before it turns around.
There is, however, a lot I learned about deisel engines that speaks to the matter and this is way more complicated than it may first appear.
For, instance, I did not know that we're not talking about emissions common to other cars. Apparantly as the engines get going, o2 pollutants drop way down but No2 picks up and while most regulation is about carbon there has been some debate for a long time that you can't have it both ways with a 90% reduction on carbon dioxide without a bump in the nitrogen compomant.
Here in the US there has been a negotiation going on since last year, none of which, I'm sure is going to be a factor over time.
Remember, Toyota ended up writing a huge check for, we're not exactly sure what still at this stage of the game.
