Road trips
Good morning everybody!
I joined CC in 2000 after my last visit to the US. Then I moved from Germany to South Africa, and it's became further away to see America. I miss it, and have been planning a road trip since a while.
ChuckCobra reminded me of it when I checked his website.
I like to cover the NY/HN area (ERA), Miami, Midland (Jim Hall), Utah (Kirkham), Colorado (Boulder), LA and Mesa. I would plan the dates around events, like SAAC convention, Pike's Peak or Bonneville (or any other). I fly in between to cover the longer distances.
Maybe the admin can open a Road Trip section? I need some basic info, which I can get on TripAdvisor or Lonely Planet, but not so much Cobra or US car related related, like an auction, a scenic mountain road or vintage car show.
Cheers,
Dominik

Hi Dom,
I don't know what you trip dates are and if you would want to come this far North in California but in April we have the big Kool April Nights car show which normally has to turn away cars as they only allow 2,000 entries. Some times they have several cobras, Gt-40s and a Daytona Coupe once in a while. Also about every other type of pre 1979 car that you can imagine. And if the weather is nice some of us take drives in our cars and there are show and shines all that week. The show is at Redding which is near Shasta Lake.

Hello Ron!
North of Cal is on my list. The dates are entirely open so far, because I have to finish a few projects still.
Thanks for your input. I actually prefer local "small" events (up to 2.000..) to a huge race event like Daytona where I burn my feet walking around..
Mountain backroads, even in a rental car, are my aim. And seeing old friends.
Does anybody know when and where SAAC is in 2019? Or even this year?

Dom,
I prefer the much smaller shows myself. I used to enter this one but got tired of standing in those crowds for 10 hours., So now if I take a car to one I go to the smaller ones they have scattered around here. I normally just go out to this one to take pictures, look, and talk to the people that have cars there.

Dominik,
The Shelby American Museum in Boulder should be on your list. The Mecum & Barrett-jackson car auctions can be enjoyable, even as just a spectator.
SAAC 43 is in Northern California, and will be using Sonoma Raceway for the driving portions. Speaking of driving, in the fall there is a huge event called the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Hundreds of Historic cars will race on Laguna Seca, plus there are plenty of other car related activities going on at the same time. Pebble Beach and Amelia Island are two major Concours D'Elegance events you might check into as well.
One other suggestion is in your travels plan a day driving the Tail of the Dragon, 318 turns in eleven miles. I suggest you avoid it on the weekends if possible, it becomes rather busy at times.
Once you have dates tentatively set I'm sure you will get more ideas thrown at you. Have fun in the planning stages. Cheers!
~Steven
