It was 60 here yesterday and a really nice day but I was sick all day and really feel bad this morning. As soon as I get my medicine taken I am off to bed for the day. It is supposed to be in the low 70s torday and I hate to miss being outside in such nice weather. But my nerves are bad and my hip hurts so bad I can't hardly put any weight on it. Growing old is a joy as you discover parts that you never knew you had.

Hope you feel better. Crazy weather ... was 62°F at midnight and this morning its 31°F.

Have to go around and change all of the clocks. That should take all day, except for meals, reading the Sunday paper, TV and naps.

Warren,

I hate the darn time changes. Wish I lived in one of the intelligent states that never started this B.S. Now I have to change my computers manually as hey were programmed to change on the old dates. Of course the new ones will be in the same shape in another year when they change it again.

Yea, I have nothing but good to say about my internet. I live out far enough that there is no FIOS, no Cable Modem, and no DSL. My only options are dial up and 1 guy who has blanketed the area with 802.11G. He rarely has any downtime. Cost is a bit more than cable modem, but the only option, so it is a moot point. The antenna on my roof is connected to the network, and I can connect any computer to my router with no issues. That part is quick.

Wireless routers are supposed to be able to do 1500 feet, few make it past 350 feet.

Sounds like you are going to have to install things to get it back into operation.

Better than having a virus.

Joe,

The last time I had to reformat and set everything up again I think it took almost the better part of two days. Just the formatting and reloading of the OS took the big part of a day. I started the format at night and went to bed and let it do that during the night. Then once everything was back, all options set, and I was ready to go online to download my Security Center, I had to wait after that for what seemed hours for it to put all of the Windows updates back in. That is why I am thinking of getting an external hard drive and saving everything on it as a mirror disk.

By the way, I forgot to tell you that I finally after two years found the problem on the Comet that was causing the gages to not read when it is cold and the motor to shut off when they did. In case you don't remember I posted the question long ago about when it is cold and I first put the key in and turn the switch on, everything would work. Once I started the motor and it ran long enough to get warm I could drive the car. But if I tried to move it while it was still cold the gages would just drop to nothing and the motor would stop as if I had shut it off. I was told to check for a regulator to the gages, there isn't any, and several other things that made sense but never proved out. Then one day while waiting for it to warm up enough to move I touched the key and everything shut off. Turned out the original ignition switch had a very worn point between where you turn it to start and then let it come back to the run position. I got a new switch and had it put in and have never had a problem since. One problem solved in my lifetime.

It is not the standard wireless router. His antennae have a range of 12 miles, but effective range is about 6 miles. I am about 1/3 mile from the water tower where one of his antennas are.

Windows install was done on Friday night, with the updates running when I went to bed. Saturday, I was installing programs in the AM, and then went to play with others Cobras. Sunday AM I installed pretty much everything else, but I still have a few things to finish up. For some reason my PC would not read my photoshop CD, so I have to figure out why. Hopefully I can get it to work tonight.

Joe,

Do you ever have any weather related problems with that set up such as sun spots and heavy down pours blocking the signal? Out here we don't have much in the way of wireless, but in Chico they had a company or did if it is still on business that one of my friends switched to. Their system never had close to the range yours does though. You had to live within a mile of one of their repeaters and Dave lived about a block from one. But after a month he left them as he said half the time the signal was blocked by weather or anything else it seemed.
That sounds like a good system and would work well for some of the people off up in the mountains that can't get cable and can only use satellite service which is weather affected.

I have experienced some slow downs, but only 1 drop of service in the year that I have had it. I have heard that some people do experience more drops, but like I said, I am 1/4-1/3 mile from the antenna. I have a clear line of sight to the antenna on the water tower from my roof antenna as well, so I know that is helping. With no other interferences, it takes one heck of a storm to knock it out. I loose satellite well before I loose internet.

The one time I did loose service was when lightning struck a transformer near by. The whole neighborhood was without power. My routers are on a UPS and using my laptop, I can still surf when the power is out. I did this to have a way of checking weather. The service was still up for a while, but then dropped off before my UPS died. I am thinking his UPS died before mine did. It took a day for it to come back on after the power was restored.

My wireless router is only good for 500 feet. At east that is what I thought.

Steve, plug your antenna into the back of a laptop and get connected. Then pick up the computer and start to walk away from the router. That will tell you how good it is. I used to do this test regularly when installing the routers.

I usually got about 300 to 350 feet and the connection would be dropped. It is RF so weather or not, the connection should be maitained. I mean, there is no "skip" going on.

My internal router is just a standard Linksys over the counter and it is good for around 500 feet before I get drops. My neighbor can pick up the signal on the one side of his house and the router is on the opposite side of my house. My laptop has a very good antenna. I pick up signals were others are getting nothing.
