I can not believe you all are giving this much to basketball.

Now, if the players are on frozen water...then it is a different story. And, they can actually hit the other player...there is going to be a more interesting game.

But bouncing a ball on a wood floor and tossing it though a metal hoop...I dunno.

Tru,

Bouncing a ball on a wooden floor and putting it through a hoop requires a small amount of skill. Sliding around on ice and hitting another person with a stick only requires a person to be able to skate. Besides that the basketball rules are easier to understand.

Besides, now that Warren has seen how much Tiger Woods won at that last tournament I am sure that he will really get serious with his golf game.

Partly cloudy and 72°F here. It is fantastic outside, even when I'm doing work around the yard. Ugh, there's that 4 letter word again. Got to get my ride in this afternoon before the next rain and thunderstorms. The last few days (and the rest of the week) is/will be weird. Cool temps and thunderstorms each afternoon.

I can take it

Drove to a cruise night yesterday before the game. About 1 mile from the site, the roads were soaking wet from a downpour. All of the cars were wet in the parking lot. I timed it just right ... never got a drop of rain on the Cobra. It was fun watching about 10 Corvette owners drying their cars, as quite a few people surrounded my car asking questions.

There are only 3 cruise-ins close to me tonight. I'll have to flip a coin to see which one I'll go to if it does not rain.

OK, time for lunch and watch all the babes on the Las Vegas TV show.

Tru,

If you could simplify that game where they hit each other with sticks and count how many teeth they knock out of the other teams players, I might understand it better. I watch Soccer but still don't really understand several of the rules. Hockey really isn't a big sport here as it is hard to find ice in 118 degree weather. But for the sake of peace I am happy that whoever it was won whatever it was and you are happy.

And on a worse note, I just saw where Tiger Woods is through for the season. He really messed that knee up and also has some stress fractures. So it is back for another surgery and try to come back next year.

OK class, time for some more history of Quincy. There will be a quiz, especially for anyone that thinks sliding around on ice while beating on people with a stick is a sport. (Just kidding Tru)

I took this picture on the way home from yesterday's cruise night. It's about 3 miles from my house. The building in the background is the Souther Tide Mill. The mill, built in 1806 is the oldest surviving combination grist and saw mill in America. The rise and fall of the ocean tides powered the mill. Last year the city approved $100K to help preserve the building with the hope of creating a park with the mill as the centerpiece. It is currently fenced off with barbed wire on top to keep vandals away.

Warren,

That is a nice picture and I hope they do preserve that old mill. So many things have been destroyed that the younger generation doesn't even have an idea of what it was like back in the early days. We have a few places around here that have preserved some of the old gold rush equipment and stuff and it is interesting to listen to the remarks from tourists. I heard one woman make a remark that she never realized gold came out of mountains. Unfortunately, at least from my viewpoint, they have had to seal most of the old mines that we used to go through when I was younger. But with the sue happy society we now have, I can understand it as some of them are very dangerous, especially if you have never been deep underground in damp tunnels held up with rotting timbers.

Ron,
We had chalk mines just north of where I grew up and we used to go into them when I was a kid. One year there was a cave in deep in one mine so the state shut down a few and posted warnings about the cave in dangers. Someone decided to remove the wood planking barrier that they used on one of the less stable mines and went in. There was a lot of speculation as to what caused the cave in that day, but all that went in were crushed. The family sued the state for no doing more to protect them, and the state responded by completely blowing up all the entrances. They completely sealed off the mines and a piece of history was lost in my opinion. I only vaguely remember the mines.

I used to dream about finding an abandoned gold mine and digging. Of course I found that where the miners gave up and turned a different direction was only inches from the largest vein ever found.

Joe,

That is what they are afraid of around here as some of those old mine tunnels were about ready to cave in as the bracing timbers were completely rotted away. One had caved in and we used to crawl over the rock pile to get to the other side so we could go deeper. Stupid, but it was fun. The way they blocked the entrances here is with concrete plugs about 10 feet thick. There has been talk the past year or so about maybe re-opening one or two of the mines but so far nothing has came of it.
They have been trying to clean up the run off from the Iron Mountain Mine for the past 5 years. I believe they said it has the most toxic water in the United States that comes out of it. You can see it from Redding and the whole mountain is red. Everything that water touches it kills.

GMW!

THE OLD PHONE

THIS WAS ONE OF THE 'GOOD OLD DAYS' WHEN PEOPLE REALLY CARED ABOUT EACH OTHER

When I was quite young, my father had one of the first telephones in our
neighborhood. I remember the polished, old case fastened to the wall. The shiny receiver hung on the side of the box. I was too little to reach the telephone, but used to listen with fascination when my mother talked to it.

Then I discovered that somewhere inside the wonderful device lived an amazing person. Her name was 'Information Please' and there was nothing she did not know. Information Please could supply anyone's number and the correct time.

My personal experience with the genie-in-a-bottle came one day while my Mother was visiting a ne ighbor. Amusing myself at the tool bench in the basement, I whacked my finger with a hammer, the pain was terrible, but there seemed no point in crying because there was no one home to give sympathy.

I walked around the house sucking my throbbing finger, finally arriving at the stairway. The telephone! Quickly, I ran for the footstool in the Parlor and
dragged it to the landing climbing up; I unhooked the receiver in the parlor and held it to my ear.

'Information, please,' I said into the mouthpiece just above my head. A click or two and a small clear voice spoke into my ear.

'Information.'

'I hurt my finger,' I wailed into the phone, the tears came readily enough now that I had an audience.

'Isn't your mother home?' came the question.

'Nobody's home but me,' I blubbered.

'Are you bleeding?' the voice asked.

'No,' I replied. 'I hit my finger with the hammer and it hurts.'

'Can you open the icebox?' she asked.

I said I could.

'Then chip off a little bit of ice and hold it to your finger,' said the voice.

After that, I called 'Information Please' for everything. I asked her for help
with my geography, and she told me where Philadelphia was.. She helped me with my math. She told me my pet chipmunk that I had caught in the park just the day before, would eat fruit and nuts.

Then, there was the time Petey, our pet canary, died. I called, ¡Information Please,' and told her the sad story. She listened, and then said things grown-ups say to soothe a child. But I was not consoled. I asked her, 'Why is it that birds should sing so beautifully and bring Joy to all families, only to end up as a heap of feathers on the bottom of a cage?'

She must have sensed my deep concern, for she said quietly, ' Wayne , always remember that there are other worlds to sing in.'

Somehow I felt better.

Another day I was on the telephone, 'In formation Please.'

'Information,' said in the now familiar voice.

'How do I spell fix?' I asked.

All this took place in a small town in the Pacific Northwest . When I was nine years old, we moved across the country to Boston . I missed my friend very much. 'Information Please' belonged in that old wooden box back home and I somehow never thought of trying the shiny new phone that sat on the table in the hall. As I grew into my teens, the memories of those childhood conversations never really left me.

Often, in moments of doubt and perplexity I would recall the serene sense of security I had then. I appreciated now how patient, understanding, and kind she was to have spent her time on a little boy.

A few years later, on my way west to college, my plane put down in Seattle I had about a half-hour or so between planes. I spent 15 minutes or so on the phone with my sister, who lived there now. Then without thinking what I was doing, I dialed my hometown Operator and said, 'Information Please.'

Miraculously, I heard the small, clear voice I knew so well. 'Information.'

I hadn't planned this, but I heard myself saying, 'Could you please tell me how to spell fix?'

There was a long pause. Then came the soft spoken answer, 'I guess your finger must have healed by now.'

I laughed, 'So it's really you,' I said. 'I wonder if you have any idea how much you meant to me during that time?'

¡I wonder,' she said, 'if you know how much your call meant to me. I never had any children and I used to look forward to your calls.'

I told her how often I had thought of her over the year s and I asked if I could call her again when I came back to visit my sister.

'Please do,' she said.. 'Just ask for Sally.'

Three months later I was back in Seattle a different voice answered:
Information.' I asked for Sally.

'Are you a friend?' she said.

'Yes, a very old friend,' I answered.

'I'm sorry to have to tell you this,' she said. 'Sally had been working part-time the last few years because she was sick. She died five weeks ago.'

Before I could hang up she said, 'Wait a minute, did you say your name was Wayne

'Yes.' I answered.

'Well, Sally left a message for you. She wrote it down in case you called. Let me read it to you.' The note said, 'Tell him there are other worlds to sing in. He'll know what I mean.'

I thanked her and hung up. I knew what Sally meant.

Never underestimate the impression you may make on others.

Whose life have you touched today?

Lifting you on eagle's wings. May you find the joy and peace you long for.

Life is a journey ... NOT a guided tour. So don't miss the ride and have a great time going around. You don't get a second shot at it.

I loved this story and just had to pass it on. I hope you enjoy it and get a
blessing from it just as I did.

Ron

We have some of the trees cut, still have piles of brush to be moved and burned.

I see Warren found a forclosure special.

Ron, Hockey is a great game of skill. I only hope you can watch a game with someone that can explain what is going on. Great story BTW.

Guys! it is 55 and we about to leave for LCS. I will post pics when we return!

Have fun at LCS.

Thunderstorms this morning, but nothing like earlier in the week. Just a normal thunderstorm without all the wind ripping trees out of the ground. Supposed to be off and on like this through tomorrow. I think the storm earlier killed one of my trees. Both are still small trees, and one of them has been having a hard time estabishing itself. It was partially uprooted and now all the leaves are falling off. All the branches are brittle as well. I think the uprooting may have been the last straw for it.

It is going to be another humid, dusty day here. And I was just reading an article where some gas stations in West Virginia have stopped accepting credit cards to pay for gas and others in other states are looking for ways to do so. I didn't realize the credit card companies take a percentage of the gas sales and now with gas over $4 a gallon, the credit card fee the stations have to pay for each transaction is starting to be more than their profit on a gallon of gas. And the more people pay for gas, the more the card transaction fee is. Some stations are thinking about offering a few cents cut in what you have to pay if you pay in cash as they will still come out with some profit. It seems to me the credit card companies could just have a set transaction fee as it costs them the same to process a $20 dollar purchase as it does a $2,000 dollar one.

The CC companies charge a % fee for each transaction no matter where it is. I think they all now require that the business not pass that charge on to the customer. The problem with giving a discount for cash is that you are charging the CC customer more for the same product. Gets into a legal mess when your agreement with the CC company does not allow you to charge more to the credit card cusotmers. Some are worse than others. I believe the American Express Fees are the worst. That is why you see a lot of smaller companies will not take them.

Edit: Most consumers do not realize this. They think that the credit card companies are only making money on interest from them. But they are making money on both the sale and interest.

Joe,

This could turn into a mess then if they just refuse to accept credit cards and will only take cash. Where I get my gas I always pay in cash anyway so it won't bother me.
I was going to post the link to that article but it was on the 15 minute update module and would have been gone by the time anyone read it. I believe the one station that has already quit accepting credit cards said that they only made about a 2 cent profit per gallon after the credit card processing fee and the more gas anyone bought the more the credit card company took because their percentage of charges was more than his percent of profit. It showed a picture of him at the gas pumps with big signs blocking the credit card slots that said NO CREDIT CARDS ACCEPTED.

Edit: Joe I am putting the link here but it may not work as I had to pull it up from the rotating headling module.

The link works Ron. I think it will because it is not pointing to the rotator but to the story.

The link worked for me - I'm surprised it has taken this long for this to
happen. In Hawaii I have an account with Aloha gas so I use their card for
purchases. When I go to the mainland I just pay cash. Makes life easier
for me - I just save the receipts.

Who cares about the price of gas? Not when you have a glorious day with a fantastic evening for a ride. It was 82°F during the day and about 75 when I left for a ride at 6 PM. But when I was driving home at 9 PM, it really cooled off to about 66°F.

I saw two Smart cars and at least 20 cops during my ride. Very strange to see that many police on the road. Drove by 3 speed traps. One of the cops with the radar gun gave me a wave and a thumbs up, as I cruised by at 30 MPH in the 35 MPH zone.

Nice sunset too.
