All Winter here has been like Spring and now we are having cold wind, some rain, and a lot of lousy weather forecast for the next week or so. I think we had our Spring during what should have been Winter and will probably have Winter during what should be spring.

We have been getting a lot of rain lately. This past weekend, I drove over the lake and it was really close to being full again. They still are not preparing to release water to prevent flooding, but it is nice seeing water on both sides of the bridge again not way to the left only.

Same here Joe, They are releasing very little water for the folks down stream. The lakes are at good levels now and I would think they could release some to help those downstream.
Maybe they have got a little rain as well and do not need it as bad as they did last summer. I sure hope so, Texas has a few lakes that are (or were) completely dried up. ______________ Ferrari Killer Steve Must Sell Right Now . |
Yea I remember reading about the one down by Austin I think that exposed a Civil War era Black cemetery. It had been under water since the dam was built. They found several skeletons that were supposed to have been moved but were not.

This week is going to be bad weather all week. A lot of rain and wind if they are correct. Yesterday we had more rain than we have had all Winter and there were signs blown down all over town. The rain we can use, but the wind we don't need. And they say the wind will be worse next weekend than any time during the week.

After 4-6+ inches of rain in less than 24 hours,I think the lakes are full again.

Lake Lavon is still about 3 feet low but so much better than this summer was. Rain is showing cleared out, but Thursday chances again for T-Storms.

Still 3 feet low...how low was it before this latest gulleywasher ?
With the ground saturated now,maybe this next one will do the trick. |
Not real sure. I didn't check, I went to the site today to see where it was at and it was actually about 2.5 feet low, so I rounded up. Not 100% sure it was updated yet either though. I just checked it again now and it is 2.15 feet low so it is coming up and the updates seem to be pretty much real time. If tonight is like last night, I am sure it will be up. I really want a small break from stage 3 water restrictions.

It is raining lightly here this morning and we are supposed to have showers off and on all week. The last report that I saw said Shasta Lake was 44 feet low.
Also they are warning people about eating fish they catch in Shasta Lake, Trinity Lake, and four others around here as they have found over 800 times the amount of Mercury in them that is considered safe for people. Ron :( |
I checked it just now and it shows to be .99 feet low, so there was still plenty of runoff that hadn't made it to the lake yet.
Shasta is a much deeper lake. 44 foot low and we would be dry. There was talk about opening the boat ramps again for the spring and I know that will draw a lot of people out there to fish. |

I just checked and the lake is now down just 39.25 feet. When full it has a shoreline of 365 miles. I don't remember the depth when it is full, but it is well over the 100' mark. Ron |

I got to thinking about the depth of Shasta Lake and called the Shasta Historical Society. There are four towns covered by it, Kennett, Coram, Baird, and Heroult. All old gold mining towns. The depth of the water when the lake is full at Kennett is just over 400feet. The dam is 602 feet high and 2/3rds of a mile across. They used 6.3 million cubic yards of concrete in it. Ron |
That is the elevation right? Lake Lavon elevation is 492' full and it doesn't say elevation for empty. Right now it shows at 491.41 and it says that ALL parks will open for recreation season on April 1st. Very happy that we are basically full again after last summer.

I was wondering too how being down 40' could be a problem when it is 4,000' feet deep.
4,000 feet almost as deep as some ponds we have here around North Texas. |

The 4,000 was a type but the 400' is actually that deep from the top of the water to the bottom of the lake. An no Joe, that isn't the elevation as it is higher than that. That is one reason they don't worry much about divers going down to that old town and taking artifacts and when the lake is low and the town is above water they have guards around it to stop anyone from doing anything but taking pictures. Only 3 times since I have been here the lake has been low enough for it to be above water but the last time when the lake reached its all time low a lot of the old towns and railroad places and Indian Cemeteries were above the water. The sheriff's department boating division kept a constant patrol to keep people out and then closed the canyons as the water was to low for boats.
EDIT: I hope I can get this in. Joe the Dam is 602 feet high and when it is full and the Drum Gates closed that means the water has to be at least 600 feet deep at the face of the dam. Some of the other areas in the canyons may be less or more depending on which canyon branch you look at. Ron ;) |
We are still getting rain here. No complaint s though as we still need the water and they really need it down stream. Some of the lakes down stream are still in bad need of water. Hopefully they can get to safe levels before the summer heat gets here. It would be a disaster if they didn't.
