I am lucky on the water for now. Texas is having a drought as well as the lakes dry up they are really limiting water usage. Caddo Lake is the only natural lake in Texas and I am now on the Caddo basin water supply. It remains full as not a lot is pulled out of it since it is only smaller towns.

That's where they are from. Some idiots decided to bring some up and put them in a fenced area like cattle and then charge people to go hunt them. They couldn't fathom that the pigs would dig under a fence and get out. The DNR here wants them out as quickly as possible as they are really destructive.

Hate to say it but they will breed faster than you can hunt them. In a couple of decades you will likely have what texas had. They used to pay you for every carcass. Plus you got to keep the meat. That got the population down around any major city so they ended the program.

Joe,
About 2 months ago they had a program on TV where they showed hunting and killing them from a helicopter. They had a machine gun in the doorway like the ones used in Vietnam and would just mow them down when they found a group. They said they would keep doing it as long as they could as they were starting to take over that area. It was in Texas but I don't remember just where.

Yeah they are a menace. There are a few in my area and I have seen them so you know that there are more. They are very aggressive and very destructive.

I can believe that after seeing some close up pictures of some they killed. We have wild hogs here but not in great numbers and they stay mostly back in the canyons but are really aggressive if you happen to come across some of them while hiking or fishing.

Texas passed a new law okaying helicopter hog hunts a couple of years ago. PETA and other nutcase groups were upset about it,something about it not being fair and other BS. Google Texas helicopter hog hunts. It can run about $1k an hour.Big time fun though. There is no shortage of companies.
Ran across this hog track this morning. He was low crawling under a gate too big for him to knock down/open.

I was curious if they are preyed on by wolves here. We have a pretty substantial population of hunters here and they keep the deer population down pretty well. So far after a few years they are still in just a few counties where they got loose. I hear they are tasty. There used to be a $$ bounty on coyotes here but they stopped that after they got to a manageable population. Still a no closed season and no bag limit on those as well.

Fred,
That is a good picture. Didn't Tru used to come down there and go hog hunting with Kristen's husband?

I don't see him posting much any more. I think in the last post I saw he said he was really busy.

I hope not. that would only happen once. What happens if you have domesticated hogs and these decide to come in and visit?

One of 2 things will happen. If the domestic hogs resist them they will kill them. Most likely though the domestic will join them and follow them out.

That would be bad then. I wonder when they showed them shooting them from the helicopter why they didn't have a truck on the ground to follow along and get the meat. Maybe because they were covering a huge area and they were really looking for them over a large range.

When they start getting over 125 lbs the meat is not very good. Better left for the scavengers.

OK,
That explains it as some of them were huge. They did take a picture with a big boar they killed and landed to look at and his tusks looked like small elephant tusks. I would not have wanted to meet him out in the open without a large caliber gun.

Texas Blue Lacy Hog Dog
This is Josh's dog,Dubya. The Texas Blue Lacy Dog is the State Dog of Texas.
They were bred in the 1850's by the Lacy brothers about an hour from my ranch to be hog and herding dogs. They are a wolf, scent hound and greyhound mix.
He just never quits, always ready more and 100 % fearless .
"Ain't right for a Lacy to be where there ain't a hog. They need a chance to do what we've bred 'em to do. Shucks, I'd rather shoot old Rip dead than see him a town dog."
Llano County rancher, 1956 True West
This was when he was a couple months old. Easy to see where the "Blue" in Blue Lacy comes from.

Beautiful pup.
Ron I have seen 350 to 400 pounders with my own eyes and heard stories of 500 plus. Those tusks will rip you in half if they are attacking. I have seen where they entered below the rib cage on a guy and cracked open his ribcage like a can opener. He was lucky to survive.
