Fred,

Enjoy your Taco. That picture has a couple of strange bulges on each side.

Good question Fred. When you find out let me know.

Almost traded my truck in for another last night. Been wanting something nicer and more powerful, but don't want a high payment. I made the mistake of buying a V6 and it is loosing value faster than I am paying it down the whole time I have had it. I am more upside down now than when I bought it and drove off the lot. :( Found a used F150 Lariat 4x4 for a decent price, but having to add how much I will have to for my current puts the payments over $500 and I just don't want to pay that much.

Seems that the price I need it to be and what I want on it and mileage are not going to match up very well. So I need to keep searching and maybe I will finally be the one to stumble on that deal that you always hear about.

Ron61 10-08-2014 02:38 AM

Joe,

What kind of motor do you want in your next truck? A V-8 gas engine or deisel? Out here they are both going out of sight but many of the people with the deisel powered ones are getting rid of them because of this states insane law to make the older trucks pass smog when they weren't even designed with smog equipment. I don't think they should be able to pass a retoractive law like that. If you can't get it past their made up smog limits then the state will buy it for few dollars and some politician who is exempt from any laws will keep it. One guy here has spent enough trying to get his to pass the smog that he said he should have just bought a new one.

I will get a V8 gas motor. Mainly because they don't offer a diesel engine in the F150. I did find a nice FX4 in Oklahoma so I am going to see if the numbers will work for me.

392cobra 10-08-2014 05:09 AM

Good choice on a V8 gas. Bigger the better, except for the 5.7. The 5.0 is a good engine. That's what I have in my '12 F150 FX4. I pulled a John Deere tractor from Corpus to my ranch and averaged 11.5 mpg. I usually get 16.5 mpg, average highway/city. My son has a '14 F350 FX4 w/6.2 gas. He gets 11-13 mpg empty.
Unless you are towing heavy loads a lot, diesel is a money pit.

I keep an eye out for you.

With gas and diesel the price it is here, pedal powered cars are lookng good to me. I filled the car up yesterday and the low price gas was $3.89 at chevron. The other two were $3.99 and $4.09 for the so called premium. You can get it cheaper at the junk gas stations but it doesn't run as well and you wind up buying gas more often so don't really save anything. I tried that on both the 65 Comet and the 08 taurus and when I used the cheap gas I would go to Redding once and the gage would be down off the full mark almost 1/4 on both cars for the same trip. Using the brand name gas, though it is higher, I can go to Redding twice to the same place and the gage is still touching the full mark.

My wife drives a 12 F250 6.7 turbo diesel. It actually gets 18 MPG average not towing. That new 6.7 gets better than any previous. I am looking at 2 used 2011 FX4 trucks right now. Both with the 5.0. The only difference is mileage and the one with more mileage has a sun roof.

Ron61 10-10-2014 02:15 AM

Joe,

Do you want the sun roof? Let us know when you find what you want and get it.

Ron61 10-10-2014 08:59 AM

Ok, I am going to try to post the first start of my Coupes engine here. Joe may have seen it ovedr on the other site but I bet Fred never saw it.

No sunroof is required. Still debating on a new xlt package or a used lariat or FX4. About the same price and both ways have their advantages

Been a very long time coming Ron ! Sure sounds good.

I suppose you have driven it since the video ? When was the last time ?

Congrats Ron !

Fred,

John still has it down at his shop as he is going to drive it and make sure there are no leaks or any other small bugs that show up before he makes the long trip to haul it up here. With the air conditioning and the roof it will be much more fun to drive in the Summer here plus I asked them to detune the motor some for this crap pump gas we have. All they have to do to change the tune is put it on the chassis dyno and then change the injectors size and the fuel pressure. In the present state of tune it puts out around 385 RW horsepower which when they took all of the accessories off and did the math that put it right at 535/550 at then flywheel. It does accelerate quite fast though and you can read about that over on the site or I can copy his posts and email them to you if you are interested. They can get another 60/75 horse just by increasing the size of the injectors and raising the fuel pressure and retuning it. But that is enough for me now.

Glad to hear it is finally coming along. It will be great once you sit behind the wheel again.

Ron61 10-12-2014 06:50 AM

Joe,

It has been a long and costly rebuild from the frame up, but once it is all done I will forget all of the frustration.

After all the debating back and forth, I decided to test drive a 2011 platinum 4x4 with all the options and eco boost engine with 60k miles followed immediately by a 2014 xlt 4x4 with all of the options available on it and the 302 v8. About 2k difference in price. I ended up with the new 2014. Platinum needed new tires body had a lot of scratches, tail light was marred but not broken. The only advantages it really had were sun roof heated/cooled seats center console shifter and the longer bed. Xlt had leather locking hubs, trailer brake controller, deep center console, sliding rear window, and all of the features that were on my mandatory list. I ended up putting more down than I wanted but I wasn't finding what I wanted in the price range I needed for the payments I wanted. Rained here yesterday so I will have to get pictures after I get the mud off. Same dark blue my old one was but a 4 door instead of extended cab

Ron61 10-12-2014 07:15 AM

Joe,

Congratulations. Now that you have all the things that you wanted you will be much more satisfied. Looking forward to seeing the pictures.

Ron
