Boiled corned beef dinner. My favorite. I "corn" the beef myself. Onions. potatoes, cabbage and carrots all go in the pot with the corned beef.

A true Irish dinner. Too bad I'm not Irish.

Hmm,
When that dish is made here we use Roast Beef. I suppose it is similar but still not the exactly the same.

Start the day off with a political discussion.

note to self . . . be on time, always !

A priest was being honored at his retirement dinner
after 25 years in the parish. A leading local politician
and member of the congregation was chosen to make the
presentation and give a little speech at the dinner.

However, he was delayed, so the priest decided to
say his own few words while they waited:

'I got my first impression of the parish from the
first confession I heard here. I thought I had been
assigned to a terrible place. The very first person
who entered my confessional told me he had stolen
a television set and, when questioned by the police,
was able to lie his way out of it. He had stolen money
from his parents, embezzled from his employer, had an
affair with his boss's wife, taken illegal drugs,
and gave VD to his sister. I was appalled.

But as the days went on I learned that my
people were not all like that and I had, indeed,
come to a fine parish full of good and loving people.'...

Just as the priest finished his talk, the politician
arrived full of apologies at being late.
He immediately began to make the presentation
and gave his talk:

'I'll never forget the first day our parish priest arrived,'
said the politician. 'In fact, I had the honor of being
the first person to go to him for confession.'

Moral: Never, Never, Never Be Late!

Thumbs up A joke for our elderly members on this thread

An elderly couple, who were both widowed, had been going out with each other for a long time. Urged on by their friends, they decided it was finally time to get married.
Before the wedding, they went out to dinner and had a
long conversation regarding how their marriage might work.
They discussed finances, living arrangements, and so on.
Finally, the old gentleman decided it was time to broach
the subject of their physical relationship.
''How do you feel about sex?'' he asked, rather tentatively.
''I would like it infrequently'' she replied.
The old gentleman sat quietly for a moment, adjusted his
glasses, then leaned over towards her and whispered,
''Is that one word or two?''

Darn, the smoke is terrible here this morning. I think there may be some clouds above it, but it is really bad. My eyes are stinging and watering so bad I can hardly see and I am in the house. Outside looks like a gray haze. I am coughing and just feel miserable. If there are clouds above this, then they are probably holding the smoke down on the ground and there is not a bit of air movement. The tree leaves are just hanging. I hope this stuff lifts from ground level after while as it is even in the house and I changed the filter to my air conditioner this morning and it was full of ash that has gotten into the house. It is really hard on the dogs, especially Sweetheart. I think that may be because she is the smaller and closer to the ground. If this doesn't let up soon I think I am going to have to call my doctor and see if he can give me something so I can breathe.

Time for a vacation Ron. Its really muggy here. It's only 67°F outside, but I have the AC on just to take all the humidity out of the air. Without the AC I'm sticking to everything. Just started to rain.

Steve - a roast beef is cooked (roasted) in an oven.

A pot roast is cooked on top of the stove .... in a pot, with just a small amount of water after searing the roast to the pan. This insures you will have great gravy.

But a corned beef is a " beef brisket" and cooked in water at a slow boil. I only use the thin end brisket ... much better than the thick end brisket. Many people use a thick end brisket for BBQ because its inexpensive ... but it has a ton of fat, which usually melts away when slow cooked for a long time.

My father was a butcher and owned a grocery store/meat market. I worked every Saturday in the store while I was a teen, so I learned a lot of stuff regarding dead cows, chicken, lambs and other animals.

I am a proud member of PETA .... People Eating Tasty Animals

Warren,

I just talked to my cousin's wife in Arkansas and she said they have been having rain almost every other day for the past month and they can't get their hay cut and baled. She also said it was really muggy there today and that just waking outside was instant wet. Boy, if we could just get some of the rain all of you back there are getting it would be great.
I will trade you 4" of dust and 20,000 acres of fire for 10" of rain.

Ron

Ron
Just tell the Mt Shasta Goddess to turn the trade winds around, so they blow from the east to the west. Your problem is that you live on the dry side of a mountain range. Move a couple hundred miles west and you will see more rain and less fires.

I can hear a thunderstorm coming down the tracks. Wooo Wooo. Boom.

We probably will not even get any rain from Dolly. The hurricane is blasing brownsville and it is smoking hot outside here.

Hope all our members in the Houston area are safe and sound.

Steve,

They showed just a little of where the storm came ashore on TV here. From what they said the levees are holding and so far things aren't as bad as they had feared. Hope that is true.

What a day. I found out today that I have to go on a trip to correct a problem caused by sales again. I have to fly out to Fontana CA tomorrow morning and am scheduled to stay through next Friday. I just hate it that I am stuck there on Saturday and cannot go in to do some of the work. I would rather work all day and come home 1 day earlier when I already completely loose a weekend anyway.

Today was spend working as fast as we can to get everything together to get all the equipment tested and shipped. There are 3 of us going to 3 separate locations to do this. The only other 2 Engineers are off tomorrow and Friday so that is going to be real interesting. There are no Engineers in the office.

Do what I did when I was stuck on a business trip over a weekend. Make sure you rent a nice car, like any high powered Cadillac. Then drive the snot out of it over the weekend. Find a nice dirt road and dirt track it! Pull up to a concrete wall and do a NASCAR burn out.

Been watching the weather up there for a few months.I've been wondering if it is ever going to quit so I can take a ride up there.
Sept. seems to be a fairly dry month in the past.Tempts dropping some too.
That might be the time.

Fred,

Just take your umbrella and go. Last year they lost a couple of fields because it kept raining so much and he just had to brush hog them and leave it lay. Now the ones that they have managed to get cut and bailed are ready to cut again and those are his main hay fields as that is where he has his best feed grass. All the lakes are full and they have been letting them draw down a little as they can but they fill right back up. With all of this smoke and fire here for over 5 weeks now, I am about ready to go back there and spend a few days inside watching it rain instead of burn.

Ron

Warren,
I was going to try to get a 4wd vehicle and go hit the deserts. Too many chances for tickets doing it in the city these days.

Joe - that sounds like fun. Make the best of it.

Last night was weird. Thunderstorm lasted about an hour or two. But it was Boom, Boom, Boom almost continuously. It sounded just like a 4th July fireworks. Its been light rain all night and supposed to rain very hard today. They have posted flood watches, but not a problem for me. I live on the side of a hill, so everything flows down the street into the ocean.

I wish I could send Ron some of this rain. My cucumber patch is growing like crazy. I need to pick them.

Hey Tru - try my recipe if you have lots of cucumbers. They are really good done this way.

Bread and Butter Pickle

4 quarts sliced cucumbers
8 sliced onions
½ cup salt
4 cups sugar
5 cups vinegar
1 ½ tsp Turmeric
1 tsp celery seed
½ tsp cloves
2 tsps mustard seed
Ice for packing vegetables

Pour salt over sliced cucumbers and sliced onions. Pack in ICE. After 3 hours bring remaining ingredients to a boil. Add drained and rinsed vegetables and heat through. DO NOT BOIL.

Warren, how long do you put them in the bath for?

Joe, sorry to here of your forced trip.

Ron, you certainly are in a situation there. I suppose I might be looking to take a vacation...somewhere else.

Well, it was 55 this morning and for the first time this week, the freeway was only partially jamed.
