Fred,
You should make that trip to the Ozarks now and get away from the hurricane weather. This one is looking as if it could cause a lot of damage in sore areas if it doesn't lose power or change course. I will stick with the Earthquakes. At least we don't have to sit for a week watching them coming.

Rom - when did you change your name? I liked Ron better. Fat fingers strike again.
Earthquakes ... do not forget forest fires and Nancy Pelosi.

I see Steve is upping his posts, why I can only imagine. Steve what is with this non stop dribble that sounds like the rest of us?
Joe, the lines should be slightly slack. They are to give support in high winds. Three at about 120 degrees apart should be all you need. Cover the area at the base of each with compost if you have it. Use straw if you can not get compost. You want to wait two years before you trim and remove those lines.
Then you can shape the trees for whatever you want with more success. I trim in December through March why the threes are dormant and I only trim 20% max. I find 6'6" is a good limb base and train the trees so the lower limbs are 6' 6" or better above the ground. Unless it is a pine.
Hang in there with your trees.

Warren,
Lousy typing struck again. Besides at my age I got two of the three letters correct, so that is permissible.
Forest Fires are much preferred by me at least to Princess Pelosi. And they should have the last tow that started here last week contained by tomorrow. Then a day or so break before more, the way things have gone around here this year.
Yes it is 9/11 and even out small town is having a service this evening up at the fire hall where they have a sculpture made from steel from the twin towers.

Joe,
It would also be a good idea to feed the trees right now if you haven't already. That coupled with rain you will be getting this weekend will help them to "root" faster.
Tru, stated you can trim the trees as late as March, but I wouldn't do it that late here because of our weather. February is the late for this part of the country. Don't you think Tru. By March, the trees are already in mid bloom. I always thought you should trim before the bloom.

BTW:
I did not loose any direct family members on 9-11 but today my prayers are with those who did.
All "real" Americans lost a lot on this day in history.

Hurricane Ike hitting the upper Texas coast (Galveston area ) and then taking a swipe at Austin , all on Saturday is starting to make more sense now.
Texas was scheduled to play Arkansas in Austin on Saturday.

Tru,
Take a vacation like this and get away from everything. It will do wonders for you.

I think you should take the vacation Ron. That fire and heat situation you have over there has got to be rough.
Now, I'm not saying Texas is the Garden spot, but it is currently not on fire. It is underwater, but not on fire.
Joe, you can trim up to 1 inch limbs in early March and the tree with be fine. Make sure to use pruners paint if the tree have big buds or leaves.
I can not spell. It hurts my head.

Tru,
They are supposed to have the last two big fires contained today if the wind doesn't kick back up. At least it blew the smoke out of here. Texas is nice and one of these days in the near future after it is under water I may go fishing down there.

Joe
When the trees blow over, just stick 'em back in the ground. If they die, call FEMA for some emergency dollars, and have them plant some new ones.
If you do not get anything out of FEMA, get the local TV station to do a sob story on the news about how bad the Bush administration is running the country. Maybe you'll get a couple of hundred thousand dollars out of the deal. Call that fat tub of $hit, Roger Moore on the phone. Maybe he can spread some manure around to help the trees grow.
