Just for grins... google the expression "tossed the salad" or "tossing the salad". Sorry, could not help myself.

I'm back! Did you miss me? While my post count was climbing my living life count was receding. Like Pink Floyd said, "shorter of breath, and one day closer to death." So, I went for a bike ride yesterday. Wanna know how I did?
Distance: 42.06 miles
Average Speed: 2.301 MPH (F-250, eat my dust!! What did the snail say when he rode on the turtle's back? Wheeeee!)
Weight lost: 4 pounds on the ride (mostly water), 0.6 lbs actual (If I was heavy enough to begin with I could lose enough weight riding my bicycle to make up the difference between a big block and a small block!)
Traffic laws broken: Rolled through a couple of deserted 4-way stop signs in a residential area, but did stop and wait patiently for two red lights.
39.8 in a 35 zone, 38 in a 35, 26 in a 15 (in my neighborhood where NOBODY does 15)
Cyclists encountered: 4
Cyslists breaking law when encountered: 0 (Now the next 196 are going to have to be doing something illegal to match the Shasta Lake PD statistics)
Motorists breaking laws: Couldn't keep track
Unhappy motorists: Most of them looked unhappy. People just don't seem to be enjoying life as much as they used to.
Number of motorists I made angry: None, that I know of. At least I wasn't honked at, run over or off the road, nothing was thrown at me and nothing was jammed into my spokes or up my a$$ so I must have been doing okay by them.
I even made it home in time to mow the lawn before it started raining. So, all in all, I had a pretty good day.
Now, back to business! That statistic from the Texas DMV about 70% of accidents being caused by cyclists is pretty disconcerting. If you guys would stop hitting them, running them off the road, etc. maybe the cyclists could get that stat up to 100%!
Did it mention that 100% of accidents between cars are caused by motorists? Maybe we should start looking at getting motorists off the road. They sure are causing a lot of accidents! Statistics can be strage at times. I don't recall the exact number they bandy about around here, but for the sake of argument we say that 30% of fatal accidents are caused by drunk drivers. That would mean that 70% of fatal accidents are caused by sober motorists. Drunk drivers must be safer, at least statistically.
Maybe the Texas manual should say that a lot of motorists often disregard the rules of the road. There's probably a lot of that going on, too. It sounds like Walker, Texas Ranger should get away from the donut shop and start enforcing some traffic laws!
Look, if I had a magic wand I could wave to make everybody play nice, obey the law and get along peacefully with everybody else, I would wave it! I've offered some advice on things we can and should do to coexist on the roadways. Do any of you have any ideas? (Short of banning cyclists)
Oh, yeah, and since this thread has drifted into "tossing salads", all I can say about that is if you find somebody willing to do it for you, give it a try!

Al! I like it. Actually, I love it.
Welcome to the world of playing Devil's Advocate in the Lounge. I mean by that remark, of course, a man waits for a post that "just isn't right" and jumps in to correct it. When you're in the mood, don't have to wait too long here.
There is only one flaw in this. This Lounge is (and I hope always will be) a sacrosanct imaginary place where everybody comes to freely uncork their Devil Thoughts.
So since the forum is already full of Devils, any contrary Angel of Mercy can expect to get their logical wings clipped.
Heck, we are all drawn to the flurry of feathers and falling would-be angels... and we come back to the Lounge over and over to see it... or be part of it. Humor is simply based in tragedy. Wouldn't be any fun otherwise.
Which reminds me. I think all sparrows should be tarred and feathered. Well, tarred anyway. I'm sick of them crapping all over my clean car... and bicycle. Any fellow sparrow haters out there? How about dirty bird lovers?
What a great thread this has been. One of the classics, methinks.

I have to pull my daily driver out of the driveway every time I take my Cobra on a ride. I park it out front on the street, but the telephone lines are parallel with the middle of the parked car. The birds $hit on it - at least 2 to 5 $hits per ride. Hate them byoooods!
I could always get out of the Cobra and put the daily driver back on driveway (and visa versa on the return), but I'm lazy. Its easier to hit the daily driver with a quick stream from the garden hose and maybe a little swipe with a sponge.
P.S. My daily driver is a 98 Merc with 130K miles I bought 5 years ago for $1700. Paint is faded. I wash it about once every month, and usually its the $7 exterior car wash. It does not owe me anything.
P.S.2. So I can't be accused of hijacking a thread, I do not mind cyclists that obey the rules of the road. Same with car drivers. Its the idiots that make you slam on the brakes while holding the horn down ... they frost my a$$.

Al,
I told you before that Shasta Lake is a small place. We don't have 196 people here. So it a lot easier to have a high percentage of something than in a large place. And if it makes you feel better I actually had a young kid on a bike thank me for stopping yesterday and not hitting him as he had ran through a stop sign and I was coming down the street that had none. But I drive slow anyway and it was easy. Now if it had been one of the fools around here that drive like they are on the freeway it could have been a bad thing.

I have no beef with sparrows. Even let them build nests at the arch on my front door and crap all over my front porch. Like to see them every year even if the buggers do make a mess. BUT; BLUEJAYS? I shoot those bas^&#%$ on site! Oh, and WASPS...don't get me started!

Better frosted than tossed.
And yeh. The doves are the worst. That picturesque scene where the dove flies away with an olive branch... really would have the dove, a branch and a huge streak of pooh cement. I use one of those broom-on-a-hose thingies on my old daily driver.
So I can't be accused of hijacking a thread...
As far as bicycles, I often do run stop signs or lights if there is no traffic. Even in an auto, I sometimes stop, look and go late at night, if no one is around. I mean no one. The fine here is $100. Old habit from low mass motorcycles and unresponsive traffic sensors. Sins get easier with practice.

We had some Robins build a nest about 1 foot overhead of our patio door. We thought they were so cute, hard working friendly little devils. Until there were eggs. Kamikaze lil ba$tard$.
So you dislike noisy birds but are a dirty bird lover?
My brother bought a pellet gun because woodpeckers apparently like to peck steel siding... early in the morn.
I woke early one morning,
The earth lay cool and still
When suddenly, a tiny bird,
Perched on my window sill.
He sang a song so lovely
So carefree and so gay,
That slowly all my troubles
Began to slip away.
He sang of far off places
Of laughter and of fun,
It seemed his very trilling,
brought up the morning sun.
I stirred beneath the covers
Crept slowly out of bed,
Then gently shut the window
And crushed his little head.

Wes,
Great poem. My gutters are the fascia type and are painted brown. I can't tell you how many times I have gone out and ran the big woodpeckers away because they were hammering on them. The first time it happened I must have jumped a foot as it sounded like a machine gun. I guess the gutters being open amplifies the sound. You would think the dumb things would finally figure out they aren't getting anywhere with that metal but they seem to just hit it harder if I leave them alone.

Al-stick the "personal attack" comment up yer padded ass.The odd man out always cries he's attacking me,he's attacking me .And you're the odd man out.As just about everyone else on here has stories along the same vain.However-you do have some points to which i counter with this question:
Yes,you are right(on the bike)
Yes,i am wrong(in the car)
You're right,i'm wrong and you're DEAD.
Tell me the point in being right.
The over-whelming current on this topic is people are sick to F'ing death of bicyclists.
POLICE your own and things might change.
On the way home from the yard today,i was preparing to make a right hand turn(signal on)One of Al's bunch was riding on the sidewalk and just keeps going off the sidewalk into the street without evey looking!!!!I saw this coming and it since it was a three lane street i just hit the gas and avoided him.Unfortunately,i didn't have time to hit the horns. And you wonder why we have an attitude?

Bill,
Maybe "personal attack" was the wrong term. Would you like ad hominem better?
I'm right, you're wrong, I'm dead, my widow is rich, your wife is broke, dreading visiting day at the penitentiary. You get three hots and a cot!! Whoo-hoo! Was it worth it?
What color is the "Locomotive of Death"? Maybe I should give a heads up to your local cycling club. You are a very dangerous man!!!
That cyclist should have gotten a ticket for riding on the sidewalk. Sidewalks are for pedestrians. Good thing he wasn't a pedestrian stepping off the curb. He probably would have had the right of way. Just like the cyclist that would have had the right of way if he would have been riding in the street where he belonged. Do you wait for cyclists when you want to turn or do you pull ahead of them and turn? A lot of motorists do that. I never see them do it to other cars though. Must be that big pair hiding inside the vehicle, knowing that they can always "step on the gas" and get away anonymously.
I went on a ride today and had a car full of teenagers yell something unintelligible at me. I was not only in the three-foot wide bike lane, I was riding beside the concrete curb because it was easier to ride on than the recent chip-seal. What was I doing wrong?
Later on the same ride, I was riding as far right as possible on a two-lane rural road. Some motorist decides to do a three point turn right in front of me. I had to come to an almost complete stop. Did I blow a gasket? Shove something up his a$$? Beat the hell out of him? No, I just started pedaling again. Thought I might ask a motorist, what was this idiot thinking?
I did see what was left of a broken broom in the ditch, though. What is the proper length to cut it? Are the lengths different depending where it's going to be shoved?
Too bad the broom handle wasn't ten feet long. It might have been the proverbial "10 foot pole" that marks the distance people use when they want to avoid something, like, say a train.
You're clearly intolerant and nothing I can say will change your mind, will it?
It seems everyone else has calmed down. Maybe it's your turn.

Al...perhaps the teenagers were asking you if you had your "$50 cyclist's license" yet.
Did you have it displayed correctly?

Wrong again-the truck is titled with my old LLC company.Your widow can't touch any personal property.Once again another deflection. What does this have to do with our wives? As soon as you get beat on a point, you change the parameters.Keep talking-the hole gets deeper.
What color is the "Locomotive of Death"? Maybe I should give a heads up to your local cycling club. You are a very dangerous man!!! That is pathetic. In a dark alley it would be true though.
That cyclist should have gotten a ticket for riding on the sidewalk. Sidewalks are for pedestrians. Good thing he wasn't a pedestrian stepping off the curb. He probably would have had the right of way.
Yes,he would have but then again if he was on foot he wouldn't physically been able to beat me to the intersection, thus his right of way is a moot point.Keep trying to deflect the point and bring up non-sequiturs.It really is amusing.

What is your F*&KING malfunction?Only a half-wit imbecile would construe my story the way you just did.Or someone who's getting his ass handed to him in the discussion.

He has the right to make a three point turn.If there is no bike lane-you're S.O.L.-deal with it.
I did see what was left of a broken broom in the ditch, though. What is the proper length to cut it? Are the lengths different depending where it's going to be shoved?

Al-seek medical help-You are cleary without a doubt one of the more F'd up people on this board. And that is saying a lot.

You're clearly intolerant and nothing I can say will change your mind, will it?
I can't be intolerate.Here's three reasons why:
1-i married a blonde-there's a reason for all those blonde jokes.
2- i have to share a cab with an engineer.
3-i still hang out at CC to help folks even though a portion of them are completely clueless like you.
