Default "It's a Shelby Mustang"

Well, opened the local rag, a Ford dealer advertisement caught my eye - "$44,000 - Look, Look - These are Shelby Mustangs"

I'm thinking - wait a moment - like a Shelby GT500? Perhaps the mark up is gone?

I was ready to visit the dealership first thing in the AM, but looking closer - the 5 available Mustangs were GT's - further research revealed that they are GT's with $13K of God knows what added to make them "Shelby Mustangs" - yes, and Shelby GT is on the side of each car. They are basically a $32K Mustang with $13K in Shelby stuff - so a discount of around $1K is being offered - WOOHOO!

Now I'm thinking that Shelby has sold out his name to Ford to do with whatever they want to do and call it a Shelby. This just seems wrong, but probably isn't.

Next stop - the local Ford dealership just to admire once again the two Ford GT cars that they have on the lot - both red with white strips. One of them now has a new price sticker - $156,890, plus $75,000 - with the notation "Rare Car" - so, $231,890 plus tax, etc. - I was thinking - is the rare - as in rarely sold? After all it is a 2005 car! Another interested fact is that they leave both cars out at night with full access to the lot - and, don't even take the cars inside when it occasionally rains. Hmmmmm........

Actually, the Shelby GT is a legit car. The cars are built by Shelby in Las Vegas. They are acutally more legit for being a real Shelby than the GT 500 is (which is not touched by Shelby at all).

Interesting.......so, whatever Shelby does to them costs $13K and makes a basic Mustang a Shelby GT. Sounds to me like a replica of a Shelby, just like my Cobra. Actually, Shelby doesn't do anything to them, personally anyway. It's all just selling the name at this point - nothing special that will add or maintain value after you drive it off the lot.

Well, Shelby himself didn't do much on the original cars either, that's why you hire people to do your work .

The Shelby GT is just a bolt on car, pretty much just body parts, wheels, intake, exhaust and tuning.

Not really much different than a base model Roush or Saleen and they cost just as much.

Exactly right.
Sal and I share the same opinion... the GT500 is a nice car, with loads of go-fast goodies...but, it is a production Mustang...built by Ford..with some licensed stickers from Shelby....much like an Eddie Bauer Edition SUV.

Touched only by anything-Shelby in just the Board Room, not the garage.
Not real rare....they built 10791 GT 500's (8115 coupes and 2676 convertibles.)

It really is another SVT product from Ford....no more. Nice car, but no Shelby.

Now...the GT is another story.

Just like the old days.

Quote:
"Shelby GT models begin life as a specially-equipped Mustang GT assembled at the AutoAlliance International assembly plant in Flat Rock, Mich. The cars are then shipped to the Shelby Automobiles facility in Las Vegas for transformation before delivery to Ford dealerships nationwide."
Really just like the original GT-350s, OEM cars are sent to a Shelby facility and re-worked with an integrated package of bolt-on speed, handling and appearance goodies...then put back into the dealer channel as Shelby GTs.

There is the DNA that the new GT500 totally lacks.

Let the SVTOC handle the Registry for the GT500s if they like...there is nothin' special there... SAAC should have the interest in the GTs, since they are akin to the originals and close to the CSX4000, et al, Cobras, that are replicas of cars-past...the GT, though, is a new car from the Shelby garage.

For the market to decide. The GT500 is true 'selling the name'...like a Michael Jordon sneaker. The Shelby GT is the special one, though. They only built between 5600 and 5800 GTs and GT-Hs, and they were touched, not licensed, by the Shelby-owned company.

Thanks for all the input - very interesting - when one thinks about it - the Cobra is really not about Shelby, but about what he created - the Cobra.

Does anyone think that the Mustangs - Shelby GT, Ford GT500 or Ford GT will end up classics some day? I'm thinking - no.

From the Web:

In essence, the Shelby GT will be a less powerful, less expensive companion to the powerhouse Shelby GT500. Where the "boss" Shelby is fitted with a supercharged 500-horse 5.4-liter V8, the newest member of the Shelby corral gets a 325-hp 4.6-liter V8, slotting it just above the 300-hp Mustang GT.

In the 100 plus year history of the Ford Motor Company they have produced one car that stands out from all others, the Ford GT. Produced for just two short years, 4038 cars, 550 hp, 212 mph, mid-engine, handbuilt and adorned with the most sensuous body ever to grace an automobile. Does anyone think that the Ford GT, out of production now for one year with prices already climbing, is not already a classic? To a lot of us, this is the most desirable car that has ever been produced in the United States. Classic is an understatement.

Yes we have had the John Goss Ford Falcons and GM Commodore with Peter Brocks name.

Brock went onto to do Brock Commodores - similiar to Saleen.

So I wondered when the new Shelby Mustang badged car would hit the used car lot.

Google

John Goss Ford Falcon and

Peter Brock Holden Commodore
