Default New Ontario speeding law

A couple of months ago, there was a discussion here about the new speeding law that was going to be introduced in Ontario. Basically anyone caught going more that 50 km per hour (30 mph) over the posted speed limit would face fines of at least $2000 and would have their vehicle impounded for a week. Additional infractions would be much more expensive.

Well the law came into effect yesterday and within the first few hours the police had already impounded 47 vehicles. A motorcycle was caught doing 200 km/h, a street racer doing 194 km/h in an 80 zone and a 2 day old Chrysler 300 got caught doing 174 km/h. In addition, a couple of rental cars were siezed going way over the posted limits. One kid was crying as they towed away his mother's car in which he was caught speeding. The typical highway speed limit is 100 km/h.

The police also have the right to impound any car equipped with a nitrous oxide system. There is no appeal mechanism in the law and the driver also has to pay for all towing and storage charges. While the article in the paper didn't mention anything, I think I remember that the maximum fine is $10,000 for repeated offences and they also have the right to crush the vehicle.

The first time I visited Quebec was a real eye opener.

1) Fantastic people who really went out of their way to make a visitor welcome. Just a few snobs that would not give you the time of day.

2) If you did not go at least 20 MPH over the posted speed limit, you would get run over. I can remember getting passed by hundreds of cars. Everyone always talks about the crazy Bostonian drivers, but Quebec has them (us) beat by a country mile (or should I say kilometer).

With that new law, Quebec is going to rake in the cash

You are correct for recognizing that we (Quebecers) drive really fast. You are also correct that you have to keep the "pedal to the metal" to be able to stay with the traffic flow here. Many people in Quebec expect to be able to exceed the speed limit during a snow storm. The worst (or best depending on how you look at it) drivers are in the city of Montreal. It is said that in Montreal, red means stop, green means go, and yellow means go faster. The first thing I always do before pressing on the brakes for a yellow light, is to look in the mirror to see if the guy behind me is going to brake or accelerate.

Luckily for us, this new law is in Ontario, not Quebec. However, one of the first 47 people to be caught under this law was a driver from Quebec driving a Ford Focus, no less.

This is where you drive a $50.00 junker and let them keep it if they impound it.

The entire town is going to be driving junk or at the speed limit. Hence, they will get what they want.
