Calif. Fire Worse
Well just like they said, the winds have really spread this fire and it could be really bad if they don't die down some. I used to live in some of that area.

When we had the fire in the East Bay Hills, Oakland & Berkeley. I had sailed over to Angel Island for a BBQ. While eating lunch pieces of burnt pages started to fall out of the sky. As we sailed out of ther cove we could see the flames in the hills.
Southern Calif. being a desert is tough on property owners once the flames start. I use to hang around Malibu in the late 70's. It could turn into a war zone quickly once a fire started.

After many years of dealing with these fires, why have they not or, do they have system for using sea water to prevent or stop the fires?. Of course I'm referring the homes close to, or on the beaches?.

Probably the seawater, and the sand that comes with it would eat the pumps. I could imagine them filling heklicopter buckets, and the bottom of planes with seawater. They would need a thorough cleansing though. Salt water is a tough enviroment.

Perry,
Many of those canyons are so deep and steep there is no way to get into them. When I was a kid we used to make racers and race down the few fire roads they could find places to cut. Just like here. they have to let the fires go until they get to a place they can get men to put a fire line around the fire and then hope the canyon winds don't blow the burning embers another mile or so behind them and start another big fire. The last big fire we had up here, I think it was three fire fighters that got caught that way and killed.

... things are definitely getting interesting, to say the least. Was watching the flames from my driveway this morning. Mandatory evacuations are now less than a mile from my house. The only thing that really bothers me is that I'm up on a hill, right in the wind. The smoke & ash has been terrible. Just hope none of the airborne embers end up on my roof.
Here's what it looked like yesterday, around 5 PM...
upwind...
and downwind...
the actual fire was much closer this morning. Am questioning my sanity for coming in to work today, but my neighbors are home & will keep an eye on things. (just hope I can GET home tonight)
my neighbor's parting comment was... "no matter what, SAVE THE COBRA!"

Ooooh! That is eery looking! Good luck to you.
Oh, hate to get political (not!) but I wonder how long it will take for the blame to get leveled on Bush?

Mike,
More likely fringe liberals should be embarrassed this time. Like Ron said, there are no roads into the area so that humans could fight fire. Sierra Club, perhaps?
The idea that forrested areas should be left to go natural strikes me like leaving midwest prairies to go back to natural grasslands instead of cropland. Say... I once heard that the reason we don't have trees here is that the prairie grass fires used to kill them.
Well we do have trees, I guess. The North Dakota state tree is a rural telephone pole.
Good pics, by the way, Slick... kinda scary...
...
EDIT: Whoops, Mike. Looks like you edited while I waited for my internet to come back up. If Albert had done a better job, it wouldn't go down like this.

I have fought forest fire in a steady wind, you pretty much get out of the way and hope for the best.
Any thoughts of arson or terrorism involved here? I haven't heard of any yet but can you imagine what a guy in a light plane with a box of flares could do?

I heard they suspect a downed power line in the latest fire. I also heard they are NOT trying to save homes where the home owner has not followed their advice on fire protection.
Cut down the trees around your house. Make a fire line around the house, etc. Some folks like to live right IN the 'forest'. I can't blame them, but the fire fighters will no longer risk their lives trying to save such a house. Food for thought...

It is amazingly sad how many chickens are coming home to roost as a result of liberalism (read: environmentalism). It is the age of unintended consequences. But will the liberals recognize this? Prolly not. Just blame others. Obviously, things are more complicated than what I just said... still, you have to wonder when the light bulbs are going to start lighting up.

I've been very impressed with the abilities of the firemen (and women)... There's been relatively low loss of structures in Santa Clarita... I think the local tally is 25 homes- most over in Canyon Country last night. There were a lot MORE homes at risk this morning & all were protected. The Stevenson Ranch fire DEFINITELY popped up in a hurry today... we were all sent home from work early. The worst thing was not having access to information & not knowing what was going on. The rumor-mill was in high gear today. Almost left work at lunch when I heard the evacuation was getting closer to my house... was worried that I might not be able to get home. But, I can see the Incident Command Center on the other side of the canyon from me, so figured as long as they're still there, I'd be ok. My neighbors on both sides were home as well, so figured they'd let me know of impending doom.
Can't tell ya how many offers I had today to drive the Cobra to safety. ![laughing](http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/images/smilies/laughing.gif)

My daughter has already headed down there with the rest of the Governor's staff to assist in coordination. One of the pics she sent me this afternoon provides the big picture...
A couple of folks we know around here (Bill Malone and XLR80R) were evacuated earlier today. Wish them luck along with the other 300,000 or so folks who have been pulled out already.

Well so far I have seen a few of the places where I used to work that have gone up in flames. Those Sanana Ana Winds can be brutal even without any fire as they do get hot. And they seem to blow all the time. We have really been fortunate up here as we face the same type of stuff, tons of dead fuel, canyon winds and it has been about 7 years since the last big fire here. Hope they get a break today in the wind. And good luck to you who live there. I hope that your homes escape the fire. The last big ojne here got to within three blocks of my little house and I live in the middle of the city. It burned on both sides of the city before they got it stopped and then wiped out a town farther upo in the mountains.

I'm mailing you guys kudzu seeds, during the summer it's not unusual for this vine to grow up 5-10 inches a day. Large leaves, deep green and the deer, cows, and goats love it. It will replenish those hills in no time.....

Has anyone thought about the insurance ramifications from this?
Kudzu? keep that stuff there! I watched, is disbelief, Alton Brown eat that stuff. Personally I think that is an alien plant bent on the destruction of mankind. ![EEK!](http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/images/smilies/eek.gif)

Are there a bunch of fires down around San Diego as well? I saw 2 east of San Diego, and it said they merged to 1 larger fire. I am asking mainly because in a couple of weeks I am flying to San Diego and then driving out to Calexico.
I haven't been out there since I moved from San Diego over 7 years ago, and I haven't been keeping up with the fires. Now this trip for work and I wish I had kept up with what is going on.
