Ernie,

You are giving away your age. Knives have been out for a long time. Now it is guns of all types and bombs.

Montreal, the home of the best hockey team in the world (well it used to be the best hockey team).

I'm going to Vermont next weekend, I will check out their maple syrup. It should be cheap since I will be spending Canadian dollars. OUCH !!!!

Where is that fence anyway?

Wayne,

The fence is on the Mexican border. By the way, how about buying me a few thousand of those cheap dollar bills and sending them to me?

Wayne,

Look for Mac Donalds maple syrup, and I am not talking about the hamburger joint. It's the best syrup I have had the pleasure to pour over my hotcakes

Ron, I was referring to the fence as per this thread as we managed to get so far off-topic.

Well like most things, there are at least two sides to every coin.

As a Canadian spending in the US (I have a boat on Lake Champlain), I love it. Five years ago, it cost me about $1.60 Canadian to buy each US dollar. Today, it will only cost about 90 cents to get a greenback.

However, as an employee of a Canadian manufacturing company, I am very worried about our future. It is estimated that more than 200,000 manufacturing jobs have already been lost in Quebec and Ontario due to the exchange rate and that doesn't take into consideration the significant change over the past week or two. Our dollar is strong because of oil. Canada is the biggest supplier of oil to the US and oil is now close to $100 per barrel. However, the strong dollar is going to kill our manufacturing sector. I have no idea where this will end.

Yes! Precisely! And I just got my BEAUTIFUL red Red Sox jacket in the mail today...the one they were wearing during the series.

Looks like venamm is coming around. Edit: I was wrong.

OK, so as soon as I see my fence building friend, I am going to ask for some pictures. As soon as they are done with the southern border, they should head for the northern border. Not sure how those illegals will do it, but my guess is they will sim up the Pacific coast and come across the Candian border.

Scott, we can build the northern fence out of Canadian spruce. That should even things up a bit.

Why doesnt the American government start a legislation where for a company to hire immigrants, aka the mexicans, the employer needs to pay for adequate housing, give them money for food, and give them an equal pay as others in the industry would earn, and not allow the immigrants to collect Employment insurance or welfare. This is what the Canadian government has set out and done, and this is stopping Canadian companies from hiring out to other countries.

Also going back to the Canadian mill topic, our mills, atleast in British Columbia, are strictly just harvesting the wood infested with pine beatle, at the moment. So in turn if we don't actually harvest the wood, the pine beatle which has already taken over alot of bc, would actually spread down into the states. I'm not sure how bad you guys have it down there but its getting pretty bad up here. Since the pine beatle epidemic has started they have stopped harvesting the clean wood and I know of two local mills that have shut down recently because of this and also because of the Canadian dollar doing so good. Don't get me wrong I'm not knocking buying local lumber and such from your own country, but every country has a number of resources that they export. For example Washington state is a big exporter of fruit, which personally I used to own a fruit packaging plant which we had to shut down because the Americans were selling at prices we could not compete with. Now I own a winery, which 60% of all the oak barrels we buy are American oak and the French oak barrels we buy are still made in the states. But with the winery we now aren't competing with the American market with wine, since not many American wineries sell in canada, we now have to worry about Chile, Argentina or Australia. So with every market you have your ups and downs, and there will always be a competing market that can offer some goods at a cheaper rate then local.

Sorry for taking this off topic again. I'm not really sure where I was taking this whole thing, but that was my rant for the day. Good day and Good night.

Mike

Mike,

I am not sure that I really understand just what you were getting at, but how would you like to have worked for a company for say 10 years, you have to pay for your own house, food, and bills, and then they decide to help the immigrants by paying for their houses, food, and then paying them the same wages as you make, plus they get all kinds of benefits, legal or not. Besides that, the extra expense which would of course have to include insurance for the housing, and other extras would drive even more companies out of this country. About the only work in this area any more in minimum pay jobs in the stores as all the industrial and logging has been driven out of business by increased Workers Comp, Insurance premiums, and anything else the politicians can think of to tack on.

Ron,

Actually what i was saying, by the government doing this it is actually stopping companies from hiring out to immigrants because of the extra expense that it would cost the companies to bring the employees in. As an employer myself, we have considered bringing up a few mexicans to do our vineyard work, but after seeing all the expenses involed, we ended up hiring local people at an upped wage, but in the end it is still cheaper than hiring out to immigrants. Sorry not meaning to start anything, just stating my opinion.

No, not illegal. There would have had to have been a law against that then, and there was not. There was not even a government to enforce the laws that did not exist. This, today, is quite a different situation. Most of us are here today because of legal immigration. In fact, that silly argument has been going around for a while... why nobody ever refutes it is beyond me.

And just how did the Inuit, Ojibwa, Iroquois, Huron, Apache get here? Thats right! By way of Canada (via the Berring Land Straight).

All you have to do is ask the Inuit, Ojibwa, Iroquois, Huron, Apache, etc what happens when you don't control immigration.

"There would have had to have been a law against that then, and there was not."

Ok so no laws and you were in, so you were lucky then?
lol.......wow how we sing a different song today.

"And just how did the Inuit, Ojibwa, Iroquois, Huron, Apache get here? Thats right! By way of Canada (via the Berring Land Straight)."

So now you are implying we were the ancient Mexican problem...we get blamed for your weather and people migration.....wow TEFLON USA....lol
Like a sandwich with bad bread is what you are saying. Bad in the north and bad in the south.

BTW a few historians would challenge you on that Bering Straight theory. I refuse to discuss this with you because once again you love to hate, you love to point fingers (never at home) and you seem to pull fictitious facts from mid air.

I don't think most have a problem with immigration. It is the word ILLEGAL that concerns most. Even the Indians migrated from some place else.

Our main problem is that ILLEGALS are sucking our resources dry. My wife is an immigrant, but LEGAL. It takes time, money, and patience to get here. I want to know if the person coming in is a criminal, sick, and has an income, so they aren't a dependent on our already weakened system.

Exactly,
My sentiments. You have a way of explaining things that isn't insulting. A few people could learn from you.
