They are saying this field could produce between 175 and 500 Million Barrels.

Because it was found in the 50s. It's a huge oil reserve that's virtually untapped because it's - apparently - a PITA to get the oil out of the rock. I don't know; I don't drill for oil. I haven't even been able to convince myself that "There Will Be Blood" is worth seeing (although this is only because the line "I drink your milkshake!" just seems ... weird). I saw this on some History or Discovery channel show. Probably while I was staying at a Holiday Inn Express.

Another aspect of this is what KIND of oil? Light, sweet crude? Or heavy? Heavy oil is more costly to refine, so add that to the additional cost of getting it out in the first place. Saudi oil is premium 'light, sweet crude', it doesn't get any better than that.

Well that would be a lot of oil but it would also just about bring to a stop trying to lessen our dependence on petroleum based products if what they say is true. Maybe, just leave it there for emergency use and keep trying to find better means of fuel.
