Lightbulb Dear Abby,

This has made the rounds in previous years, but I thought it would help lighten the mood for a while and show that we aren't the only people that can come up with dumb questions.

Warren, pay particular attention to the I don't know if the baby is his question.

...

Ron,

Always good to read a bit of humor.

I used the link to backtrack and find another "Looney Letter" called "Correspondence between a traveller and the maids at his hotel over an ever expanding pile of hotel soaps", ( http://www.snopes.com/humor/letters/soap.asp ).

This comedy struck home because when I am out of town, I normally stay in one of a dozen or so designated rooms in the same hotel. Since we carry everything we may need in our grips (I use a backpack) and there are times we have to carry these packs over a mile to get to a ride, most of us try to lighten the load as much as possible. Of course we always have to walk uphill whether we are coming or going.

I refill and carry tiny samples of my favorite shampoo (not much hair anyway). But I forego packing a bar of soap because the hotel bath soap is OK and it is hard to re-pack wet soap. That is, hotel bath soap is OK when there is some. It is not unusual for them to run out of one supply or another and that includes periods without soap.

When the phone wakes us for duty we don't have much time to shower, dress and eat. So I finally took to hiding new or used soap in the rooms somewhere that I can remember. Yes, I know it's really, really weird ...but just try to take a shower without soap once.

Wes,

I know exactly what you are talking about. When I was traveling all over the country even way back then some of the better hotels would not have any soap in the room. I would call the desk and they would send some right up with the explanation that the maid must have just forgotten to put any in the room when she cleaned. I always stayed at the best hotels in whichever city I was in at the time, so they were pretty good about trying to accommodate a person staying there. I also had to go way back in the mountains once to a small town that they had stuck a computer in and they had one motel and it didn't even have phones. The water was so bad I went to a store and bought bottled water to drink. The only time I ever did that.

When I was working, I always stole the little soap bars and shampoo bottles. After I retired, I put them all together and had five shoe boxes, full to the top.

I gave 4 away as "funny" Xmas gifts and I'm slowly working on the last shoe box.

Gee Warren,

Didn't you also take the little bottles of Scotch from the rooms bars also? Since I don't drink I used to take them and give them to people in other rooms in exchange for their goodie baskets.

Soap was free, booze cost $$. What do you think?

The small curtest bottles were free and came with the rooms where I stayed. I would not have had them if they cost. Also then goodie baskets of fruit and nuts were free. Saved on lunch which wasn't free.
