Missing Cape Cod Lighthouse
Missing Cape Cod lighthouse located in Calif. Thu Jun 5, 7:59 AM ET
WELLFLEET, Mass. - Local historians for decades thought the 30-foot tall lighthouse that once overlooked Wellfleet Harbor had been taken down and destroyed in 1925.
Turns out, it had just been moved to the California coast.
The fate of the cast-iron tower was uncovered last year by lighthouse researchers and reported by Colleen MacNeney in this month's edition of Lighthouse Digest.
MacNeney told the Cape Cod Times in Wednesday's edition it was her most exciting discovery.
Wellfleet historian Helen Purcell says the discovery of the lighthouse at Point Montara, 25 miles south of San Francisco, was a genuine shock.

Thanks for posting that info. I'll send it on to my cousin who is a lighthouse "nut". She and her husband have probably visited over 100 lighthouses. Hundreds of pictures, lighthouse puzzles, clothes, etc.
When ever I see a lighthouse on my travels, I always take a bunch of pictures and e-mail them to her.

Warren,
I have a friend who is a real light house nut also. She has a huge collection of pictures of them. I have seen that light house but never knew that it had moved here from back there. Kind of interesting how a light house could be lost and turn up on the other side of the country.

I am assuming that the records were either lost or destroyed and that the people who knew about the history never knew anyone was looking for what happened. Even if local records in Cali still exist, no one there would know that someone on the east coast was looking to find out what happened

Joe,
I would expect the Bureau which runs the parks here knows of or has the records of that lighthouse. But I bet most of the people who have seen it are just like me and figured it was built there. They have another small one up near Trinidad which is in a really nice setting, but that one I am sure wasn't moved from elsewhere. That was why I posted this as it really came as a surprise to me that the lighthouse had come from the East Coast.

You left coast liberals steal all of the good things from us in the right coast. You should be ashamed!
Hey, where did the lighthouse go? Duh, I don't know ... maybe somebody stole it.

...
What the heck is a lighthouse, Ron? Is it something someone would build next next to a dry creek out here on the vast prairie? Are they buffalo stampede proof?
Speaking of dastardly grand theft, every so often someone steals the Big Boy from the drive-in here. But they always get it back. It took quite a while to find it one time, so now we have two of them. They, too, are collectable in miniature and pictures ( http://photo.net/photo/pcd0222/bobs-big-boy-34 ).
Probably more so collectable now that Richard has died ( http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpag...53C1A960948260 ).
It is a slow rainy day here.

That was kind of what I was thinking. The East Coast can't even keep up with their light houses. I wonder what else will turn up in other states that has been LOST on the Right Coast. If I should find your Cobra, rest assured that I will call you.

Ron, I'll give you a $1.50 to call me instead.
I still need one in my garage.

Joe,
When you see the post that Warren has lost his Cobra, expect a call.

Wes, I am sure most of the light houses could withstand a buffalo stampede as they are round and the heard would split and go around them. Plus most were built to withstand really bad weather as they are on the coasts. Might not be a bad idea to have a few on the great plains and other places like that as people seem to keep getting lost.

I ran out of gas once, but I have not lost it yet. I almost lost it on a damp curve, but a quick yank on the steering wheel got her straightened out before I stained my underwear.
