OK, I am an idiot and what I think doesn't matter, but if what this guy says is true, then why would the Saudis decide to INCREASE production to stabilize prices? To me, it does not sound like we have hit peak.

We haven't hit The Hubbert Peak yet, and THAT is the biggie that should have all of us terrified!

Joe,

I don't pretend to understand all of the things some of these people are saying, but I keep reading that we will have used half of the known oil reserves by 2010. Then another person comes along and changes that. Remember, this is the news people and so called experts on everything, so I just read it and figure if any of it is true, there isn't anything I can do about it so I don't get to excited about it. I watch the news and then go outside and look for the smoke to keep up with our fires. I really don't put to much faith in what our news media reports or makes up any more.

According to my Chemist buddy that works for EXXON, with the KNOWN oil reserves of today, we have enough oil for at least another 75 years, and he guess's there's at least that much if not more out there that we don't know about..............

...possibly, but if you read a little book called "Out of Gas" (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/boo...id%2DGoodstein ) which (among other things) discusses my much mentioned Hubbert Peak, the MAJOR problem does NOT come when we run out of oil altogether (... in 75 years?), but when we have used up HALF of the Earth's oil reserves (i.e. The Hubbert Peak). THAT particular occurence is predicted by many to be within 10 years at the most. At that point, we will enter a whole new era of political and social unrest where the current issues of $140 per barrel crude oil, variable supply and demand, worldwide protests over gasoline pricing and the Iraq 'oil war' will seem like playground squabbles. For anyone who is interested in our REAL alternatives to hydrocarbon based Western economies, I recommend this book. It is a little heavy going at times for those of you who do NOT have a science background, but having read extensively on the subject, this is THE most accurate account I have read of what we face this century.

For those of you with weak stomachs, it is also the SCARIEST book I have EVER read in my life as it paints a (how shall we say?) less-than-rosy picture of our alternatives. It is an apolitical tome written by a scientist, NOT a journalist, that explores hydrogen, nuclear (that would be 'nucular' for all you 'W' supporters...lol) , solar, wind, tidal, bio and thermal alternatives with cold hard facts and especially discusses not only the statistics and true yields of these alternatives, but also examines how to convert the western economies to any combination of these alternatives in the 10-20 years we have left to do so.

God, I HOPE so, but we don't have very long, and my fear is that even if we DO have alternatives (and according to this book, the ONLY one is to somehow make geothermal work to use in power stations...and THEN we can make as much hydrogen we like!!!!) my concern is not that I couldn't power my car on bioethanol or lighter fluid or recycled cooking oil or some such, BUT the bigger problem of converting ALL worldwide, oil-based INDUSTRIAL production to one of these 'alternatives'.

My one remaining hope is that FINALLY it appears that EVERYONE is now at least aware of the issues, and most are concerned about it. What will surely kill the initiatives (and eventually ALL OF US) is if this somehow becomes a political issue...then we are truly doomed. This needs to be done on behalf of the human race, not on behalf of the Democrats or the Republicans or The Green Party !!!

Just like in the 70's when we had 10yrs of oil left...

I'll add this to my list of end of the world senerios:

Killer bees

Y2K

Oil, oil, and oil.

Nuclear waste

Toxic waste

Ozone layer

Global warming

Lead paint

AIDS

Aluminum pans (remember this one!)

Coffee and sugar shortages (part II) should be along next...

Maybe not the wind, Scott ...but by burning renewable wood (American wood, of course)

Like this pre-petroleum age 20 bottom plow perhaps:

I wonder how efficient horses could get with modern technology in control?
Lets see; it takes at least one horse per bottom, so...
20 horses on a 20 bottom with one man able to automatically harness, feed and control them, from his Air Conditioned cab.

Ok, maybe 20 horses and a pony to run the AC and stereo.

Scott, in the not too distance future, a farmer will look out the window at his solar powered, GPS steered computer controlled tractor plowing perfect rows and....his planter/harvester will follow up.....

Then again...that could be old news

One thing is for sure, there is a limited supply of oil, exactly how much remains to be determined. The human race is going to have to come up with some viable alternatives to oil in the near future or else. The way the population of the world is exploding, we are going to be using up the rest of the oil more quickly giving us less time to find those necessary alternatives.

Wes there is a steam tractor show every August near my home, the torque of those low rpm engines is incredible!

Ron,

I just dunno. While he is engaging and interesting, he WAS hawking a book. I have heard many "speakers" do the same thing, and it causes red flags to go up everywhere.

Just something about his sales technique that bothers me. Everything fits a little too neatly. Will do my due diligence on this one and report back.

Mike,

I don't believe all that he said but just thought it was interesting in a way. Let me know what you find out. Seems everyone any more is pushing their latest book. At least all of the gloom and doom is making some people rich with their books, factual or not.

Steve,

First you have to make up something that hasn't been covered by at least two others. Hard to do any more. Of course you could always take two or three of their books and put your views about their statements into a book form. That should at least guarantee you a sequel.
