USS Bataan
I was driving around in Boston on Sunday. To my surprise, I spotted a Navy ship tied up to one of the piers. Of course, I had to take a picture with my Cobra in the foreground.
So I drove over to that pier to check it out. It was tough trying to get a picture of the entire ship and the Cobra in one shot. The USS Bataan is an amphibious-assault ship commissioned in 1997 and is 844 feet long. It has a complement of landing craft (launched out the stern) along with Harrier jets and attack helicopters.
For additional pics and info, check out their website. One hell of an impressive ship.

USNS Capella
Wouldn't you know it, as I was driving around, I spotted another ship in Boston. But this one was in dry dock for repairs. The USNS Capella is the seventh ALGOL - class fast sealift ship and the second ship in the Navy to bear the name. Ships in that class are the world's fastest cargo ships. Speed of 33 knots.
WOW, that's really moving for a 946 foot ship!

Does it not amaze you that the Navy can spend about the same for a carrier and the Air Force can spend the same for 2 planes?
The cost of the B-2 program in 1994 dollars was reported at $737 million per plane; however, the total cost of the program with development, spares, and facilities averaged over $2.1 billion per plane as of 1997 according to the B-2 program office.[3]
The contract to build the Reagan was awarded to Northrop Grumman Newport News and Dry Dock Company in Newport News, Virginia on 8 December 1994, and her keel was laid down on 12 February 1998. The budget for the ship had to be increased several times and ultimately $4.5 billion was spent on its construction.[3]

It doesnt amaze me. There could be more high-technology in a stealth airplane than an aircraft carrier. If the Air Force built twice as many B-2s, the price would fall by about half.

I worked on the B2 program, and it's amazing some the requirements that the airforce had at that time that drove the price through the roof.
And SC is correct. When you spread the development cost over just 21 units, the cost is outragous.
