My Big Run
This will be my second year doing this, last year on a 4 man team. This year solo with no assistance. That means NO ONE can help me. Water, food, transportation, anything. This is the Last Annual Vol-State Run (or race). Its always been called that, and it will be again next year.
http://runvb2vb.com/VolState/
The fellow who runs this is Gary "Laz" Cantrell, Wartrace, TN. Quite a ledgend in the world of Ultra Running, and quite a character none the less. Here are some interviews regarding a race he puts on called the Barkely Marathons. Be sure to click on all the interactive stuff. This is not the race I am running.
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/why-w...riosity_1.html
Anyways, starting on Thursday norning, I will be running from The Mississippi River in KY to Sand Mountain GA. 314 miles. 500 Km. Not a real good way to track me unless you are on the Ultra List. But do me a favor, and think about me from time to time! If you are religious, prayers are welcome. This is a tough one...bout as tough as they come.
Peace, and dream big!
Mike
Edit: If you want to call me and encourage me (or just plain raz me, give me crap, etc) it would be great to hear human voices...256-dma-dmdd (after this thursday until??). I will post when I finish.

I get the impression you are running with your feet, not in a Cobra. So is this a time thingy or what??

Mike,
That is a long run so take it easy and don't hurt yourself. We will be thinking of you and hoping you do great. Best of luck and I don't suppose you will be carrying a laptop so you can post as you run.
Anyway I will be looking forward to hearing how well you did when you finish the run.

I am very impressed !
Doing this all by your lonesome must involve a lot of planning just for 1 day.
You start running thursday morning ?

Yes. Thursday morning. At the ferry crossing (Dorning MO???) Mississippi River, NW of Hickman KY. The ferry is shutdown for budget reasons and/or the flooding. So no start in MO (as is the tradition).
Planning is somewhat critical. But you gotta take each day as it comes

Big deal. I looked at the map...it's all downhill.
Seriously, best of luck and arrive safely.

Thats my number. No, time is better spent this way. It is most certainly not down hill, though I know why you said that. In fact, after Manchester is a gnarly climg to the top of Mont Eagle. Joy.

Mike,
I know we don't get along all that well, but you have my best wishes on this one.
Break a leg! Isn't that what they say to people running in stages?

None. I expect to gain weight. Just like last year on the relay team. You have to eat like a pig to do this and it is easy to over do it (once you get rolling). Think I gained 5 pounds last year.
Really, you DONT want to lose weight. That is bad. You wanna stay even or gain a little. You will change a little fat for muscle. But you don't want to eat muscle (lose it, serious ketosis).

Steve, we get along fine now. You may be taking me too seriously. I think you have grown a lot lately.
And, thanks. Two more days!

A little crazy!! Just looking at that map made me want to go lay down and take a nap. Anyway, all kidding aside, I will be looking forward to any updates on how he is doing and wishing him well. Thanks for posting this.

I ran a marathon in '95 and it devastated me for days. I can't imagine a run such as this
