Hey Ernie Remember This
Ernie,
Do you remember our old hang out? This is his last year and he has been there for just over 50 years.

Sadly, it is so. This is the last of the businesses that were here when we were running around. Dude's Drive In closed about 2 years ago and I think the oldest business left in Redding now is about 24 years old. No more places for the car crowd to meet except on special occasions when they have a get together at one of the places on Hilltop and those are few and far between. Usually about 3 a year.

Ninteen cent hamburgs ain't that old. I remember the Howdy's burger joint in my town during Jr high school. Burgers were eleven cents and small fries were nine cents. It changed to a McDonalds, then changed to a Wendy's. Amazing ... always a burger joint on the same piece of property for almost 50 years.
But give me an old A&W Root beer stand. They were the best.
Hey Ron, do you remember having dino burgers when you were young?

Warren,
I still have some that is in a frozen cave. But if you want one, I have to warn you that they are an acquired taste. That sign for 19¢ hamburgers had just been put up when that picture was taken. They were originally a nickle for a regular burger, a dime for a cheese burger and 15¢ for the Gene Burger. We haven't had an A&W root Beer stand here for many years. They used to be a great hang out for the car crowd with the girls on roller skates serving you in your car. Those were great days.

There was an A&W in Laie here on Oahu, HI when I got here in '74.
Been gone now since the early 80's. All the old Mom and Pop stores
are going also. Very sad in a way - nothing really replacing them.

The A&W web site says you have one in Redding. 86 Lake Boulevard
Redding, CA 96003 (530)243-2333. Also another one in Anderson.
I have two within 15 miles of my house. The one that used to be about 3 miles away closed down many many years ago. It had the best burgers and fries, bar none.

Warren,
Don't believe everything you see on the web sites. They tend to not update them. What they claim as an A&W on Lake Blvd is and has always been a junky small building that is not considered by most as any type of desirable place and it has a reputation as a dope hang out. As for the one they list in Anderson, I don't know as I don't go down there often. About once a year for the company reunion when I feel up to it.
