We were out checking on a supposedly 'rarely fished lake' and while we were walking through the woods, I came up on this monster. I know it's not large compared to some but, for around here, it's really big. When I returned home I called the local newspaper and they published it on the front page, I guess that's my 15 minutes of fame?.

We found the lake and yes!, couple of 5 lbs and one 6 lb large mouth's. They finally ran us off after some developer bought the land. We went back later just to look around and saw where he did the right thing, made the area around the tree a park.

This here's the largest phuking tree in the world...about 45 minutes from where I sit. It is coincidently called the General Sherman, after one of my heros (the others being Tsar Peter the Great and the Fabulous Furry Freek Brothers), who walked by the little POS you're so proud of and pissed over the top of it on his way to Savannah.

Both of those trees look like millions of other trees. But over here in God's country, we raise trees that branch out in all directions. Sort of multi-cultural Just stack all six of the branches on top of each other, and your trees are second rate.

The General Sherman is a Sequoia. It is just a few minutes drive from Fresno. When I lived down there I used to spend week ends in that park and still have a couple of the small souvenirs that I got at the park station. I believe one of them is a little plastic thing that you look in one end and the General Sherman is at the other end. I hope the park hasn't changed a lot over the years as it was a great place to get out among the trees and away from everyone for a while.
We have the Redwoods Park up here which is over by the coast and they have some very large trees too, but nothing to match the Sequoias. To get away from everything for a while I can drive up to Lassen Park and walk back down through the wilderness and you won't see anyone all day. Especially since they have started charging to go into the park and the price of gas is so high.

That's not a tree - this is a REal tree! A 400 year old samaan tree in the Derek Walcott Square in downtown Castries, St. Lucia. The pictures don't do it justice. In addition to being fairly tall, these suckers grow an awesome horizontal spread.

The tree is commonly known in writing as the "Massav tree" because when strangers would go up to a local loiterer dozing in the shade and exclaim "Wow! What kind of tree is that?" his tired response would be "M'a sav." Meaning "I don't know" in the local creole dialect.

If my memory is correct General Sherman (the tree) is estimated to be over 2,800 years old. The first big branch you see in Jamo's picture is 274 feet from the ground and has enough wood in that one branch to build ten normal size US Homes.

So at only 400 years old that tree there is just a pup.

I will see if I can find some stats on the General.

BTW;
Perry that is a good find. I due hope the developer protects it. I know they say they will leave those large trees but sometimes they just turn up dead. It is ashamed but it does happen.

The General Sherman Tree


The General Sherman Tree in Sequoia National Park is the largest (by volume) tree in the world.

Computing the volume of a standing tree is the practical equivalent of calculating the volume of an irregular cone. For purposes of volume comparison, only the trunk of a giant sequoia is measured, including the restored volume of basal fire scars. Using these accepted standards and actual field measurements taken in 1975, the volume of the Sherman Tree was calculated to be slightly over 52.500 cubic feet (1486.6 meters).

Steve, I was comparing to the other saplings in the thread. The General is absolutely in a league of its own. If Ron really planted our samaan tree, though, and isn't just pulling my leg - it's gotta be more than only 400 years old!
