Extra security numbers on Credit Card

These extra 3-4 security digits on the back of your credit card have become more and more popular on Credit Cards. Some stores want to see them, you need them when ordering online, etc.

How is than anymore secure? If you stole the card the numbers are printed on the card-no secret there. If someone copies your card number to place an order then they can also copy the security code.

So how is this helpful!

The only thing it helps is when someone steals your credit card number from a impression or from the statement in the mail. They don't have the security number. Now as far as the mail, they have your complete billing information, so they can likely get what they want anyway. I personally believe it is more to make the user feel more secure. Kinda like a government program.

There's no reason a store should 'want to see them' if you present the card. My advice is to copy the numbers someplace secure for you, then erase them off of the card (nail polish remover). Without them it is very hard to order online. Also do not sign your card, but write "Request Photo ID" and protect yourself from illicit charges. Just make sure you carry your Driver's License with you. Erasing the security code will prevent a friendly waiter from copying all the numbers down and using them later....don't ask.
On an aside, one of the local shops was recently busted and cleaned out by a paddy wagon. They would take in peoples cars, and make copies of all the keys on their key rings while 'test driving' the car. They have home addresses on work orders. So far, cops have tagged the group of employees (11) with 42 home burgalries, 109 stolen cars and 11 'hot' home invasions (when owners were present) over 7 years. Nice. One more reason to work on your own car, or not let it out of your sight while being serviced.
When I have to leave a car, I leave the one ignition key and notate the mileage. Friggin' thieves.

When I left my car down to have the brakes fixed, I locked the ignition key in the trunk. Then I locked the trunk key in the car. Fortunately I had to change ignitions some time ago and have to use the original key to open the car door. That I handed to Jack. He charged me $5 dollars extra for the inconvenience, but since he already owed me $125 dollars, it worked out great.

I have a speparate credit card with a low credit limit that I use for any kind of on-line purchase or mail order purchase. The low credit limit prevents some unauthorized person from running up the balance.

I like the idea of writing "Request photo ID" instaed of signing the back of a credit card. I think that I will do that.

As far as my car keys go, all I carry is the ignition key. I have a key pad door lock on our house so I never carry a house key.

I have done that on all of my credit cards for the last decade. It makes no difference for Internet purchases (Duh). But only about 10% of the stores check the back side of the card. They never even see or touch my card when I swipe it thru the machine. Therefore, it rules out any protection from most big stores. So while it sounds like a good idea, it is not as good as you would think.

The main credit card I always use, has a $1000 a day limit, so if someone had my number and tried to purchase anything above $1000 on one day, they could not do it.

Some people also get a credit card with a very low limit such as $250 and use that for Internet purchases.

As far as the car keys, I always carry 2 key rings. One for the car keys and one for the rest of my keys. I never liked having a lot of keys dangling from the ignition of my car. So I have 3 key rings. 1 for my truck key and remote FOB, 1 for my car key and remote FOB, and 1 with my house keys, padlock keys, fire safe key, etc... I always grab the general key ring and the key ring for what vehicle I am taking. When I have to give a shop my keys, they only get the single key and FOB for that car.

The $250 "low-limit" separate credit card is a good idea.

This will sound stupid but as a merchant I'm supposed to refuse any card that's unsigned - this is directly from the card issuers.

You've never seen a bigger bunch of thieves than these card processors.

I remember almost 10yrs ago getting talked into buying the "smart chip" card terminal that still has yet to happen. Not to mention the latest RFID cards (pay and pass) there's some real secure stuff...

Not so fast....When i lived in Ca.all my documents,licenses,CCs e.t.c said Bill on them.When i moved to Az.,the state requires the name on your license to be the same as your birth certificate.
Fast forward to 2008.I'm in a Best Buy and was out of cash.So i use my CC.Which has written on the back"See I.D.".So the clerk asks for my DL.Fine-here ya go.She holds them up and says:This one says"Bill" and the DL says "William"-they don't match and hands them back to me and gives me the "How dare you try to put something past me" look.Three people in line behind me started shaking their heads.

My brother-in law and myself are checking out at the local home center years back where you can buy nails by the pound. My brother-in-law was buying a bunch of railroad spikes.

When the cashier asked how many pounds?
He answered 1 Pound.
With a quizzical look she says that looks like more than a pound.
He says they are big nails.
She says OK!

So funny...

We use railroad spikes to rig "lift trees" ( watch axemen and you will get the idea) and sometimes they are really hard to find.

I was at a local recycling yard buying some steel and I asked the operator if he had any railroad spikes...

He pointed to a corner of the yard and said help yourself..

It seems that when the meth heads can't find copper, they pull spikes out of the rail lines.

At a nickel a piece just how many does it take to get a gram of meth?

They aren't pulling them out.They're finding them laying along the R.O.W.More common than you'd think.There are a lot of people who think metal along the tracks is free game.
