The more I read about McCain's VP choice, the more I like her.

O'FALLON, Missouri (AFP) — Sarah Palin got comfortable in her new role as a vice presidential candidate Monday as she made the Republican case to stay in power.

She was careful, however, not to press too hard against her Democratic rivals after running mate John McCain promised to set aside partisan politics out of respect for those threatened by Hurricane Gustav.

"One of the goals of reform is to keep the government focused on the things that matter most," Palin said told the crowd of 17,000.

"We want a government that is competent and is dependable and is free of corruption and self-dealing."

But raising taxes and overfunding programs is not the way to make government work, Palin said.

"We don't want bigger government. We want government that does a few big things and it does them right."

Actually, she has more hands-on background and executive experience than BO, so I suppose she could have - BO is running!

And therein is something very ironic - the democrap POTUS candidate has less experience than the Republican VP candidate. Biden was probably selected to take heat off BO's lack of experience, Palin was probably selected to capture the hearts and minds of millions - with her accomplishments in Alaska thrown in as a big plus.

Excellent background article from the money.com site.....

(Fortune) -- Within hours of Senator John McCain picking Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate, the talking heads of CNBC had coined a new term: "Palinomics." In a nutshell, the doctrine stands for expanding the search for domestic oil and gas as a solution to the energy crisis.

But while Palin might be a proponent of more drilling in Alaska, she's hardly a patsy of the oil industry. One theme at the Democratic convention was Republicans' cozy relationship with Big Oil. As Al Gore put it Thursday night, the industry has been "drilling [the GOP] for everything it's worth." But whatever you think of such a statement, it would be hard to say that about Sarah Palin.

Palin reached the Alaska statehouse in 2006 after trouncing incumbent governor Frank Murkowski, patriarch of one of Alaska's powerful political families, in the Republican primary. The former high-school basketball star, beauty queen, commercial fisherman, and mayor of Wasilla (population 8,471) ran on one big issue: Exploiting her state's billions of dollars worth of natural gas on Alaska's terms, not on the oil companies' terms.

For years, Alaskans have dreamed of the revenue bounty promised by the state's natural gas resources. But until recently, prices were too low to make shipping natural gas to the lower 48 states profitable. Murkowski had negotiated a deal with the Big Three oil companies of Alaska - BP (BP), ExxonMobil (XOM, Fortune 500), and ConocoPhillips (COP, Fortune 500), which hold long-term North Slope leases - to finance and build a pipeline to get the 235 trillion cubic feet of natural gas estimated to be buried under the North Slope to market. The deal guaranteed a tax cut for the oil companies, and promised that Alaska wouldn't change those rates for decades.

But when Murkowski brought the proposal to the Alaska statehouse, it was rejected as a sweetheart deal for the oil companies. Several of the governor's negotiators were later indicted, accused of making back-room deals with the industry. Voters subsequently booted Murkowski from office. You don't mess with revenues from oil and gas in Alaska, because it goes into Alaska's Permanent Fund, which sends a check to each resident every year.

Once in office, Palin took an aggressive stance toward the oil companies. Her nickname from high-school basketball, "Sarah Barracuda," was resurrected in the press. Early in her term, she shocked oil lobbyists when she was so bold as to not show up when Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson came to Juneau to meet with her. Palin, after scrapping Murkowski's deal, would not give Big Oil the terms they wanted, yet insisted that the companies still had an obligation under their lease to deliver gas to whatever pipeline Alaska built. She invited the oil companies to place open bids to build a pipeline, but they refused. A bid by TransCanada, North America's largest pipeline builder, was approved by the legislature in August.

Palin also raised taxes on oil companies after Murkowski's previous tax regime produced falling revenues in 2007, despite skyrocketing oil prices. Alaska now has some of the highest resource taxes in the world. Alaska's oil tax revenues are expected to be about $10 billion in 2008, twice those of previous year. BP says about half its oil revenues now go to taxes, when royalty payments to the state are included. Earlier this week, Palin approved gas tax relief for Alaskans, and paid every resident $1,200 to help ease their fuel-price burden.

To be sure, it would be an overstatement to brand Palin as an enemy of Big Oil. Her husband works as a production supervisor for BP. And her support for drilling in the Alaska Natural Wildlife Reserve, as well as exploiting Alaska's natural gas resources, certainly won't endear her to environmentalists. "Personally, I have respect for the industry," she said in an interview with Fortune last year, "for the contributions it's made to our state ... and great respect for what their CEOs are doing. We know their mission, to take as much as possible and leave as little behind."

But it does take a special person to go from small-town mayor and hockey mom to standing up to the world's biggest corporations. Despite a stint as chairman of the state's Oil and Gas Commission, she'd never done business on a remotely similar stage. When Fortune last year asked Palin if she was intimidated, she said simply, "No. Being reasonable commercial operations, I expected the Big Three will act responsibly."

In that same interview, she said she intended to change Alaska's relationship with "the lower 48." She saw part of her responsibility as delivering her state's natural gas to those hungry markets. "We're still too reliant on the federal government," she said. She canceled Alaska's support for the "Bridge to Nowhere," a proposed $320 million bridge to sparsely populated Gravina Island, that Senator Ted Stevens, now under indictment for public corruption, famously included in the federal budget.

Palin was also critical of Washington's attitude towards the pipeline project. She said last year she had written a letter to Vice President Dick Cheney asking for help with the pipeline, but didn't receive a response. President Bush did send an envoy to Alaska to help get the project going, but Palin still felt the approval process was unwieldy. "So many federal agencies and permitting processes," she told Fortune. "It's mind-boggling."

Despite her sparkling profile outside the state, Palin has had her critics in Alaska. She faced bitter opposition from the more conservative members of Alaska's legislature over the tax increases. And many in the bureaucracy feel that without the oil companies' cooperation, the pipeline will never get built, since oil companies still own the gas under their lease of the North Slope. And now that TransCanada has bid for the pipeline, Alaska is committed to covering up to $500 million of its costs regardless of whether the pipe gets built.

Palin's first dream in life was to be sportswriter, covering hockey and basketball. She loved ESPN so much, she named her daughter "Bristol," after the town in Connecticut where the cable network is headquartered. Whether that helps or hurts her chances to be second in line for the presidency, we'll see. But at least we know she loves a good power play.

I'm sure some of you have heard her 17 year old daughter 'Bristol' is pregnant, everyone involved with Sarah's nomination knew this and accepted it. Bristol didn't take the easy way out! and she will be marring the father. She also has the full support of her family. Don't expect any criticism from the other side, Biden has a not so well known son that's been in trouble with the law on numerous occasions.

Default Another view from someone in Wasilla:

I have known Sarah since 1992. Wasilla is a small town. Everyone here
knows Sarah, so it is nothing special to say we are on a first-name basis.
My son is a friend of her daughter Bristol. I also am on a first name basis
with her parents and mother-in-law. I attended more City Council meetings
during her administration than about 99% of the residents of the city.

She has matured a lot since her early days on the City Council. Thank God.

She is enormously popular, having enjoyed approval ratings above 70%, and
as high as 80%, as Governor. In every way she's like the most popular girl
in middle school. Even men who think she is a poor choice and won't vote
for her can't quit smiling when talking about her because she is a "babe".

She's smart and savvy, but her only real experience is as mayor of a city
with a population of about 4,500 (at the time), and 1.5 yrs as governor of a
state with under 700,000 residents.

It is astonishing and almost scary how well she can keep a secret. She kept
her most recent pregnancy a secret from her children and parents for eight
months.

She is "pro-life" and she walks that talk. She recently gave birth to a
Down's syndrome baby.

She has terrific parents who have been there for her and lots of help
raising her kids and managing her family. She has good kids. Like all
politicians, she is a largely absent parent, and spends more time with her
kids in public when there are cameras rolling than in private. Her family
was slow to grasp the reality of political life and used to complain about
her parenting.

She is photogenic in spades. She is a good smiler. She is a former TV
reporter and is comfortable behind the camera. She is a former beauty
queen.

She is energetic and hardworking. She regularly worked out at the gym.

She is savvy. She doesn't take positions; she just "puts things out there"
and if they prove to be popular, then she takes credit.

She has taken on the Republican Party power-brokers in Alaska.

Her husband works "2 on, 2 off" on the North Slope for BP and is a champion
snowmobile racer. He arranges his work schedule so he can fish for salmon
in Bristol Bay for a month in summer, but by no stretch of the imagination
is fishing their major source of income. Nor has her life-style ever been
anything like that of native Alaskans.

Sarah and her whole family are avid hunters; her pro-NRA positions are not
just political posturing.

During her mayoral administration most of the actual work of running this
small city was turned over to an administrator who she had been pushed to
hire by party power-brokers after she had gotten herself into some trouble
over precipitous firings which had given rise to a recall attempt.

Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a "fiscal conservative". During her 6 years
as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over 33%. During
those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the City increased by
38%. This was during a period of low inflation (1996-2002). She reduced
progressive property taxes and increased a regressive sales tax which taxed
even food. The tax cuts that she brags about benefited large corporate
property owners way more than they benefited residents.

The huge increases in tax revenues during her administration weren't enough
to fund everything on her wish list though, borrowed money was needed, too.
She inherited a city with ZERO debt, but left it with indebtedness of over
$22 million. What did Mayor Palin encourage the voters to borrow money for?
Was it the infrastructure that she said she supported? No. $1m for a park.
$15m-plus for construction of a multi-use sports complex which she rushed
through to build on a piece of property that the City didn't even have clear
title to, that was still in litigation 7 yrs later--to the delight of the
lawyers involved! The sports complex itself is a nice addition to the
community but a huge money pit, not the profit- generator she claimed it
would be. $5.5m for road projects that could have been done in 5-7 yrs
without any borrowing. Meanwhile, the City still lacks a sewage treatment
plant and other basic infrastructure.

While Mayor, City Hall was extensively remodeled and her office re-decorated
more than once.

These are small numbers, but Wasilla is a small city (population at that
time of about 4,500). Public indebtedness under her mayoral administration
increased over $4000 per capita.

As an oil producer, the high price of oil has created a budget surplus in
Alaska. Rather than invest it in technology that will make us energy
independent and increase efficiency, she proposed distribution of this
surplus to every individual in the state.

SPEND AND BORROW. In this time of record state revenues and budget
surpluses, she recommended that the state borrow/bond for road projects,
even while she proposed distribution of surplus state revenues: spend
today's surplus, borrow for needs.

She's not very tolerant of divergent opinions or open to outside ideas or
compromise. As Mayor, she fought ideas that weren't generated by her or her
staff. While Sarah was Mayor of Wasilla she tried to fire our highly
respected City Librarian because the Librarian refused to consider removing
from the library some books that Sarah didn't like. City residents rallied
to the defense of the City Librarian and against Palin's attempt at
out-and-out censorship, so Palin backed down and withdrew her termination
letter. People who fought her attempt to oust the Librarian are on her
enemies list to this day.

Sarah complained about the "old boy's club", so what did she bring Wasilla?
A new set of "old boys", including Wasilla's worst-ever Public Works
Director, the totally unqualified wife of a powerful person in state
politics. She fired most of the experienced staff she inherited. At the
City and as Governor she hired/elevated new, inexperienced, obscure people,
creating a staff totally dependent on her for their jobs and eternally
grateful, so fiercely loyal-- loyal to the point of abusing their power to
further her personal agenda, as she has acknowledged happened in the case of
pressuring the State's top cop (see below).

Sarah fired Wasilla's Police Chief because he "intimidated" her, she told
the press. Her recent firing of Alaska's top cop has the ring of familiarity
about it. He served at her pleasure and she had every legal right to fire
him, but it's pretty clear that an important factor in her decision to fire
him was because he wouldn't fire her sister's ex-husband, a State Trooper.
Under investigation for abuse of power, she has had to admit that more than
2 dozen contacts were made between her staff and family to the person that
she later fired, pressuring him to fire her ex-brother-in-law. She tried to
replace the man she fired with a man who she knew had been reprimanded for
sexual harassment; when this caused a public furor, she withdrew the
nomination.

She has bitten the hand of every person who extended theirs to her in help.
The City Council person who personally escorted her around town introducing
her to voters when she first ran for Wasilla City Council became one of her
first targets when she was later elected Mayor. She abruptly fired her loyal
City Administrator; even people who didn't like the guy were stunned by this
ruthlessness.

Fear of retribution has kept all of these people from saying anything
publicly about her. People fear her.

When then-Governor Murkowski was handing out political plums, Sarah demanded
the best, Chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission: one of
the few jobs not in Juneau and one of the best paid. She had no background
in Oil & Gas issues. Within months of scoring this great job which paid
$122,400/yr, she was complaining in the press about the high salary. I was
told that she hated that job: the commute, the structured hours, the work.
A member of the Commission and the State Chair of the Republican Party was
ethically challenged, by dramatically quitting and accusing him of ethics
violations (for which he was fined) she solved all her problems in one fell
swoop: got out of the job she hated and garnered gobs of media attention as
the patron saint of ethics and as a gutsy fighter against the status quo.

She is solidly Republican. Her battles with the Republican party were not
over philosophy. They were over ethics and power. She is no political
maverick in terms of philosophy.

Around Wasilla there are people who went to high school with Sarah. They
don't call her "Saint Sarah"; they call her "Sarah Barracuda" because of her
unbridled ambition and predatory ruthlessness. When Sarah's mother-in-law
ran for Mayor, Sarah endorsed the person who was running AGAINST her
mother-in-law who was a highly respected member of the community and
experienced manager.

McCain is the oldest person to ever run for President. It scares the heck
out of me to think that someone as inexperienced as Sarah Palin could become
President. There has to be literally millions of Americans who are more
knowledgeable and experienced than she.

However, there's a lot of people who have under-estimated her and are
regretting it.

That's one point of view, hardly enough to make a decision on. Two people I retired with moved to Alaska (we use to fly up once a year to fish), I'll contact them and see if that pans out..........

A Tale of Two Résumés
Barack Obama versus Sarah Palin.
by Dean Barnett
09/02/2008 8:50:00 AM

Having spent over a decade as a headhunter for lawyers in another life, I've seen many résumés. And every résumé tells a story. The stories told by Barack Obama's and Sarah Palin's résumés could hardly be more different for two people of roughly the same age and aspirations.

WHAT STORY DOES Barack Obama's résumé tell? Obama became the head of the Harvard Law Review in 1990 and graduated Harvard Law magna cum laude in 1991. These accomplishments suggest great intelligence and strong interpersonal skills. They also suggest limitless potential.

So what did Obama choose to do with his limitless potential after leaving Harvard? Not much. His first two years out of law school, he began writing a book, commenced lecturing at the University of Chicago Law School and returned to his old vocation of community organizing. Obama's résumé would probably advertise the fact that he eschewed big money options to better serve humanity in these various capacities. Many members of the legal community would view these claims of selflessness with skepticism. Some cynical readers of his résumé would infer that he spent the time "trying to find himself," and perhaps think of the old Bill Cosby crack that after two years of searching, he should have been able to find not just himself but a couple of other people as well.

All readers of his résumé circa 1993 would ask what Obama accomplished at his serial vocations. And there the story gets grim. He didn't finish his book during the two years in
question. He didn't pursue any scholarship at the University of Chicago, so his career there stalled at lecturer and never advanced to the professor level. And as is ever the case with something as nebulous as community organizing, pointing to tangible accomplishments would be impossible.

Thus begins a pattern of under-achievement, or more specifically non-achievement, that has followed Obama since law school. In later years, Obama practiced law for a few years and then he had enough of that. His 1995 book, Dreams From My Father showed much promise, yet Obama didn't further explore his skills in this area until over a decade later with the best forgotten campaign tome, The Audacity of Hope. Similarly, Obama was a part time state legislator of minimal accomplishments. When Obama went to the United States Senate, he impressed his colleagues with his potential. But he again never attempted to tap that potential, beginning a run for president shortly after his arrival in the World's Greatest Deliberative Body.

Unlike Obama, one wouldn't look at the early years in Sarah Palin's résumé and necessarily see unlimited potential. A 1987 graduate of the University of Idaho, Palin's greatest accomplishments from her youth would come in the "Miscellaneous Information" portion of the résumé. The fact that she had won a beauty contest would impress some people. Her sinking of a critical free throw on a broken ankle in her high school state championship would impress others. Still, there would be nothing in Palin's résumé from her younger years that would suggest potential like Obama's.

And yet throughout her adult life Palin, again unlike Obama, overachieved. In 1992, she got elected to the Wasilla, AK city council. In 1996 she became mayor. She was by all accounts a very successful mayor. Her résumé entry for her mayoral years would have all sorts of bullet points for tangible accomplishments like reducing city property taxes by 40 percent. Similarly, Palin's time as governor has been distinguished. Both would starkly contrast with the various stops in Obama's career where he occasionally held impressive titles but accomplished little.

Two things would leap out from Sarah Palin's résumé--a pattern of overachievement and a pattern of actually getting things done. Two things would also leap out from Barack Obama's résumé--an undeniable wealth of talent and an equally undeniable dearth of accomplishments.

While it has become almost a cliché on the right to belittle Obama as a talker rather than a doer, his résumé suggests just that. Obama does have the requisite brain power to be president; it's unlikely that the intellectual demands of the job would overwhelm him. But his past work experience is unnerving. Obama had ample talent to excel at all the other positions he has held, and yet he accomplished little at each. So what would he do as president? Would his efforts in the Oval Office be as indifferent and irresolute as they've been at every other stop along his professional path? Could one imagine him making the political sacrifices and showing the fondness for bold action that characterized Harry S. Truman?

As for Palin, she lacks Obama's glittering Ivy League credentials. While that fact scandalizes vast portions of the Bos-Wash corridor, the scandalized neglect the most common purpose for an education--to develop one's abilities to such a point that one can actually begin accomplishing things. And there again is where Palin shines--she has gotten a tremendous amount done everyplace she has been.

In truth, Sarah Palin is the kind of employee virtually every enterprise seeks--the kind who gets things done. And Barack Obama is the kind of employee a company hires only when it's in the mood for taking a risk and willing to wager that the candidate's past performance isn't predictive of his future efforts.

His wife has the gonads and he has the p....

Whether or not Hillery made the VP slot was all about who he was more afraid of. His wife won.

The guy is a gutless wimp that is all mouth.

The way Palin is being attacked, the "o" sheep are very afraid of anyone with guts (pit bull). They know she'll tear them a new one.
