Default The Secret

OK here is the deal.

About a year ago I found out about this "Secret" I was very skeptical at first but my daughter insisted I watch this video.

When she asked "Daddy, please watch it for me" I did set down and watch it.

It is the best one hour and twenty nine minutes of video I have ever seen.

I have bought the book and read it. It really changed the way I think about many things. Yes, it is an hour and a half long but very well worth the time.

It is very thought provoking.
I wanted to share it with my friends.

Question:
Do you know about the Secret?

Enjoy:

Actually, the explanations of the "Secret" offered in the movie are a prime example of what Murray Gell-Mann called quantum flapdoodle, i.e. “hijacking the terminology of modern science without understanding the underlying concepts or employing any of the intellectual rigour intrinsic to scientific inquiry”.

But my greatest beef with the movie is the claim that whatever you sit down and imagine, the universe will provide. Almost as if the universe is a big vending machine: Insert sincere wish here, pull out cold coke (or shiny new Ferrari) here.

That seems to me to be a very mechanical, shallow, self-serving description of the universe.

The 'secret' does involve focusing on the prize, but it also involves getting up off your butt and making it happen. When people see that you are making it happen, they will assist you in some way and the more people helping you, the better.

It is the underlying thought process (insert 'focus' here) that is the goal here, I believe.
Think bad things, and bad things will happen, per se. Thoughts become things. The idea is to set your eyes on a goal, (which most people do not really focus on) and the more you focus on the goal, the more effort you will (subconsciously) put into achieving that goal.

Not simply, out of sight out of mind.

We are all bound by certain rules.
Jump out of a building and you will hit the ground, right?
(Of course I am talking about without some sort of assistance.)

I agree with you Steve.

If you are going to accomplish anything of importance it requires focus. Unwavering focus.
I'll add that you have to expect people and events to shift into overdrive to take your eye off the ball the closer you get to the goal line. If you expect this, deal with these situations and stay focused, the odds are in your favor.

It has always worked for me when I do it.

For those like myself who are curious, but not willing to spend and hour and a half to satisfy that curiousity, here's what Wikipedia has to say about "The Secret."

So, did someone tell you the secret? And that's the point, there is no secret - we all know that focus is required to achieve a goal or set of goals - it also takes dedication and work.

As for the "Secret"......

The Secret—the new self-help book and DVD that purports to channel ancient wisdom and claims that if you ask the universe for something, it will be delivered—has become a nationwide phenomenon. Here are some of the book's tips:

You deserve whatever you want no matter how awful you are

Try not to use any critical-thinking skills or logic when pondering concept of The Secret

Capitalizing on basic human feelings such as greed can bring you vast wealth

Eat a hearty breakfast every day

Please allow universe six to eight millennia to deliver

You can never be too tan

The Secret does not work if you are attempting to learn it from stolen, bootlegged, or borrowed products from Prime Time Productions.

It's a huge rip off and a full load of codswallop.

Focus becomes obsessive.

I am not sure I buy into the "universe was created to provide you with whatever you want".

I do believe that for every action, there is a reaction. I also believe there is absolutely NO FREE LUNCH.

Let us know how you do with it.

The only "Secret" that I want to watch for 90 minutes is a Victoria Secret catalog.

I have my own copy of the video and the book. It is just easier to post a link of the video that is already on the net than to upload the copy I have. The video is a lot easier to follow along with and understand.

I do believe this sort of thinking does work. If you look back and understand the thought process, you may find that it has worked for you as well. The parking space in the front, traffic being heavy, or you getting to a restaurant 'just in time'.

After I started to figure this out I have been more keen on looking for things, and it is very interesting indeed. Think you will get a ticket for speeding and you may as well pull over now.

I do not believe for a second that just thinking about something with no 'action' and it will somehow magically appear. Everything worth having requires effort in some way or another.

For me, this just reinforced that negative thoughts bring negative results, every time. Admittedly I have had many negative thoughts come to fruition over the past few years. Basically what I have learned is, if negative thoughts bring negative results, then positive thoughts may brings positive results. No free lunch expected.

It's the 'free lunch' part that I take exception too - the 'secret' primarily has one thinking stuff up and that stuff appears.

The truth is, No electromagnetic waves emanate from your head, magically transforming the universe. No mystical vibrations affect your surroundings. Changing your thinking does not change the quantum states of objects around you in any reliable, useful way. The universe doesn’t stand ready to fulfill your every wish.

Rather, you change yourself and THEN you change your circumstances. It works through a combination of entirely non-mystical, psychological and rational mechanisms, including confirmation bias, positive thinking and optimism.

The Secret offers precisely zero evidence that it could ever be otherwise, and instead proposes a number of mystical, unscientific and entirely unproved explanations. That’s why looking to this movie for explanations and insight will weaken your understanding of the "The Law of Attraction" and reduce your ability to successfully employ it.

For anyone interested - 'confirmation bias' is a tendency to search for or interpret new information in a way that confirms one's preconceptions and avoids information and interpretations which contradict prior beliefs. It's something to be fully aware of and is the primary reason why people cannot get off square one.

Faced with the choice between changing one's mind and proving that there is no need to do so, almost everyone gets busy on the proof.
