"Slamming America" while in another country is like Sk**ing in your mess kit, Not really cool, but it is funny.
I guess these showbiz folks are attempting to provide some prospective by talking trash.

That was one of the funniest bits I've seen lately, and it was completely equal opportunity. I think one of the "coolest" things we can do is show the rest of the world that we know how to laugh at ourselves.

I love Robin Williams. I think he is the best comedian of our time.

Extremely funny, and he's one of my all-time favorites.
That being said...wrong audience. He pulled a Dixie Chicks as far as I'm concerned. That's great material for an American audience, but, in my own humble opinion, I do not appreciate our "ambassadors-at-large" denegrating this country or its leaders (good or bad) abroad. Didn't like it when Dennis Miller played London and attacked Clinton, and I sure don't like this. I also got uncomfortable listening to British comedians having their time with Charles and his tampon fantacy or making fun of the Queen herself.
Just ain't right in my book.

Good heavens..... virtually everything in this world is now on video and shared world-wide via the internet or some other medium. Does it really matter that it happens live in this country or is recorded somewhere else?
Your last post seems like a rare (well sometimes) bit of naivete from you, buddy. Love ya . . .

Me? Naive? You most soitenly know me better than that.
Proud of my country and protective of it's institutions...that's all. Making fun of our Presidential election in front of an audience consisting of a member of a royal family is a bit too much for me.

And the "royal family" is important, exactly how? As you damned well know, I'm certainly very proud of our country, our Constitution, and and our institutions as well.

I have a slightly different view of Robin Williams's performance. First, it seemed more canned and rehearsed than his earlier performances. It was if he had done it exactly the same way many times before. In fact, he commented on the one joke where he substituted the name of a Briton and it didn't get much of a laugh. Because it seemed like a well used act, my sense is not that he was bashing America before a foreign audience to make a point. My sense is that he just reused the same act he always uses. He didn't bother to make up new material for the Brits. It felt a little stale to me.
Given the way the majority of Brits seem to feel about the Bush administration, I doubt that he did any harm.

I agree with Jamo, with me ....it's sort of "the principle of the thing", regarding folks (Americans) making "bad jokes or disrespectful public comments" about our country when abroad. I know we've come along way with regard to free speech and what is considered OK to say and do, but still I respect our country and triditional values, and the real meaning of our triditional values.
