Default Castrol new "Premium" Synthetic Oil

FYI-

Castrol is rolling out a new "Premium" Synthetic Oil to compete with the Royal Purples an Mobile 1's out there.

They will be rolling out 1-2 commercials during Super bowl.

Time will tell if it is worth the money.

I have been using Castrol Syntec in my wifes KIA for over 60k miles, the mfgr requires 7500 mile changes but being old school I change the filter every 2500 and the oil at 7500 and it runs like it did when new and the oil isn't really very dirty when I change it.

Thumbs up

...

There is a crew transport company that hauls us, usually with Suburbans. I believe they told me that they change filters at 8k, 16k and oil/filter the next round. I don't know which synthetic they are using but they get about 400-500k total miles on the vehicles before they sell them. They still sound and run good but the doors are falling off.

The wife's Corvette gets synthetic, just because, and I did use it once in my V-6 powered 4X4 truck right before I ran out to a car show in LA. I averaged about 85 and thought sustained speed might derive benefit. It got 18.6 mpg overall.

Normally I use ordinary 5W30 oil in everything. Consumer Reports did a test one time where they blueprinted some rebuilt engines, installed them in Taxi's for a year and re-checked clearances.

The synthetic and standard oils faired equally well with little to no wear.

Their take was that modern oils are so good, and fuel injection so clean, that synthetics weren't necessary unless high temperatures were involved, such as racing or marine use. The synthetic is good for a couple more hundred degrees before thickening and oil breakdown occur.

On the other hand, I understand that claimed better synthetic slipperyness may contribute to less fuel and longevity. Ask the crew transport.
