You need to be concerned with the criminals carrying.They are the ones that will kill you.

I'm not saying it is illegal....I just want to hear a Repubican Official say that is a a good idea to bring guns to political events...for example...I want to hear Sara say what people in here have been willing to say ...that it is appropriate...I don't give a damn if he brings a ****ing uzzi...in fact I would encourage all the people that think it is the right thing to do to bring their guns . Teriffic idea...

I thought the open carry laws did not require a permit at all? Just the basic legal rights to have a weapon in the first place ie no felonies, etc.
As far as legal concealed carry that is not really the issue here, unless you "flaunt it" which I guess is your right as well. As I understand this issue there was a guy carrying an assault rifle (M-16 type weapon?), "open carry", no permit required. At a Presidential type rally, as a "protest" of some kind, I guess! I gotta wonder though, how stupid is THAT!

Thank you, the issue is not concealed weapons. I suspect Scott the Mayor could have legally brought a AR-15 to the town meeting and laid it on his desk or whatever for all to see . What I want if to know is if Republicans or Democrates for that matter think that is a good idea. That would give me a idea about their values and judgment. I want them to speak up...let us know where they stand... I don't see anything sinister in that.

I think it would be a great idea for all the citizens to be heavily and openly armed and for the politicians to be very worried.

Are you ready to equally judge the people that would be opposed to a legally armed citizen acting within the law and their rights?

No,it is a lot older than Texas.
Armed Citizens are Responsible Citizens
"Robert A. Heinlein wrote that an armed society is a polite society. The common perception is that armed societies were polite because an act of rudeness might evolve into a duel, as portrayed in Dumas' The Three Musketeers. The real reason, though, is the mindset and psychology that come with responsible weapon ownership. The knight's sword was a symbol of his duty to protect weaker members of society and behave chivalrously, e.g. with respect and courtesy to women, elderly people, and so on. The sword was the soul of the Japanese samurai, a constant reminder of the samurai's duty and code of behavior. The sword was a symbol of taking responsibility, not only for one's self, but usually for others."
I doubt such honorable beliefs and conduct are within you.

They are not going to say it and here is why:
1. Above everything else, its a right implicitly granted by our Constitution, and doesn't need reverberation by any Republicans to be valid;
2. The Republicans are smart enough to know that the first time they say its okay, then the Democrats will say that they are sponsoring domestic terrorism;
3. Even Republicans admit there is such as athing as "too far right" and no one wants to encourage the extremists.
I am an armed, licensed-to-carry Texan and proud of it, but I don't feel compelled (at this particular moment) to carry a gun to an Obama appearance. Actually, I don't feel compelled to even attend an Obama appearance.

I think it is asking for trouble even if it is legal, within your rights, etc... I fully support our right to carry. I think that this right is what will keep this county alive through the times we are facing and will be coming our way that we have no clue on. Once we loose this right, we have crossed the point of no return and this country will cease to exist as a free country. BUT, there are times when carrying a gun WILL produce more harm than good/protection. As a responsible citizen it is our DUTY to know the difference.

I agree Joe. While I fully believe in the right, I do not believe the individual at the rally that sparked this debate was right. I believe this guy went too far with the assault rifle, but I would have been ok with most commonly carried sidearms, the assault rifle just takes it too far.

Has there been an incident in the current wave of 'town hall' meetings where someone, ANYONE, has carried an illegal concealed weapon to a 'town hall' meeting?
If not an illegal concealed weapon, has there been an incident involving a legal concealed carry weapon at a 'town hall' meeting?
Or a non-concealed firearm at a 'town hall' meeting?

I was not aware there was an actual incident. I thought this was a purely philosophical discussion. I still stand by my statement though. I do not believe there is any reason for a private citizen to carry an assault rifle to a public event. No one should carry any weapon unless they are prepared to use the said weapon. Going to the rally, at the rally and going home an assault rifle is not a weapon that would even be preferred. He did it to make a point and was very stupid IMO. And this is coming from someone who leans right on most issues.
