Default Would you want your child at the President's speech today?

I was looking for a POLL button but I guess CC doesn't have one?

But would you allow your child to attend somehting like this? Just curious what the responses are!

Me personally, I wouldn't. There are several reasons I think the speech is inappropriate, and so i would rather not.

My son said he wouldn't piss on him even if he was on fire.

He makes a Dad proud.

Actually, the speech as it's been published on the web isn't all that bad, except for a section relating to the environment. It was the lesson plan that the Department of Education distributed that was pure BS, but that was revised and basically eliminated, although sense liberals run the education experience they will probably follow the original lesson plan - not good at all.

When you start a thread, at the very bottom is an option to add a poll to that thread.

Yes, I would make sure my kids would listen/watch, and then I would discuss it with them afterwards. I agree with Laura Bush...it's respect for the office. It is also history...my folks made us watch every speech given by a President, beginning with Eisenhower, as well as all of the debates. One of the greatest gifts my folks gave us.

Some of these minor issues undercut the real debates.

I agree. You have to discuss it with your children when they get home.

After reading the "revised" text, I'd have no problem with my children sitting down to hear from him.

I just can't believe how bizarre this new administration has been. Thank god it appears they have changed their agenda from what was originally published to instead a typical mom and dad lesson on the importance of school, and to study and grow up to be a lawyer. I would prefer to watch the speech myself before letting my kids watch it, but I'm not sure what my school district is doing (inner city), and anyways, my wife is kind of taking the reins regarding any school issues.

well my eight year old came home with an opt out letter on friday, it had to be in by this morning signed to not have to watch the speech. it wasn't a school form per-se it was a form from the dept of education. you had to list the school name, my name, the students name, and of course signature required. i thought about the different ramifications of : 1. watching the speech and having my child politicized or
2. having my child singled out (amongst others too) as being
anti obama
my solution was to have a little civics class of my own on saturday, where we went over a watered down version of the constitution and the role of the congress and the executive branch, i touched on key words to be sceptical of when they would refer to obama and other government officials. she was very attentive and interested in this for an eight year old. i also signed the letter and told her it was up to her to watch it or not, if all your friends are watching it keep the letter in your bag and go along. if your friends are all opting out, wip out the letter and use it. she ended up watching the speech because only two students in her class got up with a letter so she stayed seated. this afternoon when she got home she told me it was a total bore and she hates obama. so mission accomplished without causing any collateral damage.

Most kids would rather go to Mc Donald's instead of watching some speach by the President.
I think showing it at school is OK as long as the teacher provides a fair non-politcal review. As long as the teacher only points out the need for continued education and that young people must take responsibility for their development.

Sadly, Obama is only trying to convert kids to his socialist approach and view of our role in the new world order.
He's such a D**k.

Let's just vote him out.

Thanks for all the responses guys, and for keeping it civil! i was half expecting this to start a war.

I'm in a similar boat with Bill, I think theer was another agenda here which was to catch these kids YOUNG and try to bend thier minds in his direction. A PITIFUL approach. I really liked FWB's approach to teh whole matter! Very well played!

I agree that FWBs approach was well thought out. Only two schools up here allowed it to be viewed live. The rest recorded it and the school administrators are going to go over it and then send a note home with the kids for the parents to sign if they want their kids to watch it. Any that don't want to watch it will spend the time in study hall. So far the few kids that I have talked to who did watch it would send Ernie into convulsions if he heard what they had to say about the Great Leader. And Ernie, I am being kind as even I don 't agree with some of the things I heard. But be assured of one thing, most of the population here detest Obama.
