I've always liked the idea of it being legal to desecrate the flag, but knowing that it is something you should not do.
I think both parties have handled this very well.

Are you trying to make a point or just another personal attack?

It's against the law to deface or mutilate the US dollar, but it's ok to burn the flag of our nation.

Yep.

I'm in favour of having the freedom to make the right choice.

So, should it be ok to spray paint "Washington Sucks!" on his monument...just so you can choose not to?

No - the Washington Monument is not my own property.

Cutting some fine hairs there, boy.

Let's go back to the dollar bill you own...should you be able to walk out on Wall Street and burn a pile of dollar bills?

I can't believe my luck. I had transferred all my 401K monies to an annuity in time to avoid the collapse. After working the numbers I was blown away how much I could have lost. No genius here, just got lucky with the timing.

I don't like the idea of it being legal to desecrate the US Flag in any way. I don't think it's a right. I think it's a disgrace & disrespect to every person who has sacrificed &/or gave their life for it. It should be against the law to burn or desecrate the US Flag, period. Anyone who thinks it's OK has never served, never lost friends defending it, or is whacked. That's not a personal attack against anyone, that's my opinion.
Yes, I do think the situation was handled well by all parties involved. As a Past Legion Commander I salute Commander Normile.

Jamo,
No fine hairs there at all - you simply picked a poor example.

I like CWs response, but my answer is yes. They are mine, I should be allowed to do what I want with them. However, should I deface one and try to spend it then the person I am giving it to should have the right to refuse it.

There is nothing about the United States that I consider 100% sacred, and the Founding Fathers bear this out by including the right to bear arms in our Constitution and the statement about it being our right and duty to throw off government should it not meet our needs.

Our flag, currency, Uncle Sam, and Constitution represent our government more than any other particular item.

I consider the burning/desecration of flags or currency to be like the Boston Tea Party, except that you are using your own private property as the form of protest. We hardly ever see the Constitution being burned in effigy - I think this is perhaps because the people doing the burning/defacing do not have a problem with what our government should be, but rather what it currently is.

Steve

Actually I can't wrap my head around the idea that it's OK to burn a flag as a statement of protest or just because you "feel" like it. ...never did get that.

Steve...my example was just fine for folks that stay on point. I'm sure if you bought your own crucifix or bible or koran...you'd feel pretty damn good about yourself for burning them as well.

Dumping some merchant's tea over the side is a bit different than burning the Union Jack.

Nevermind...some folks just don't get it.

What IS the logic or reasoning behind the law that does allow someone to burn the US flag in protest?

Burning the flag should be legal...

Beating the daylights out of someone burning the flag should be illegal - the fine? One dollar (preferably a defaced one).

Consider the matter solved.
