HAha!!
If you really think that the Union Jack was not burned during the Revolutionary War then you need to visit some of the original 13 colonies and do some homework. You would find that many of the folks who were involved in the tea party wanted to do a LOT worse to the British government than burn flags or make salty seaweed tea.

The tea party was done as a statement to get attention - which it did. Read some British accounts of it - it was viewed as an insult against King George - and probably equal to or worse than burning a flag.

As for burning religious stuff - I have better things to do.

Oh, Nevermind...Californians and Revolutionary war history just don't mix I guess.

I'm not even sure how they define an American flag anymore. A few weeks ago, I drove by a dealership and all the cars with antennas had a flag on them. It was about 10" by 8". Should these be illegal to burn?

When I need a copper washer I drill a hole through a penny and commit a crime by saving myself a quarter....

Funny thing about protests, a college student put a hang mans rope in a tree on public property before the last election and was charged with a hate crime. The same tree had a yellow ribbon tied around it by another student and that was just a-okay.

It the noose had a flag in it would that be a crime?

I like CWs response, but my answer is yes. They are mine, I should be allowed to do what I want with them. However, should I deface one and try to spend it then the person I am giving it to should have the right to refuse it.

There is nothing about the United States that I consider 100% sacred, and the Founding Fathers bear this out by including the right to bear arms in our Constitution and the statement about it being our right and duty to throw off government should it not meet our needs.

Our flag, currency, Uncle Sam, and Constitution represent our government more than any other particular item.

I consider the burning/desecration of flags or currency to be like the Boston Tea Party, except that you are using your own private property as the form of protest. We hardly ever see the Constitution being burned in effigy - I think this is perhaps because the people doing the burning/defacing do not have a problem with what our government should be, but rather what it currently is.

Steve

I would argue that the flag represents our nation more than our government, a nation that through its history has time and time again shown nobleness in its efforts to keep people free. I know this is not accepted in the liberal ranks along with American Exceptionalism. But it does no harm in a free society to show honor and respect for that which symbolizes our values and to protect that symbol from desecration.
And it is not our right to through government when not meeting our needs but it is, when it does not protect our rights.

Boy there's a load of BS if I ever heard it. Are you implying that somehow Liberals don't have the same respect for the flag, God or country that radical right wing nut flag waving Vets have? Such blanket statements concerning a particular group, any group, of people just don't cut it.

So lumping millions of right of center vets together is not a blanket statement?

It wasn't personal at all, just dripping with irony. Kind of like "bait", I wondered who would catch it.

Tell me the name of the liberal who defends American Exceptionalism, what I have read they think its hypocrisy, just google it and read. Also the general liberal view does not see America acting noble in its cause, maybe why Obama is always apologizing to the rest of the world. The left teaches history with the view of those who have been victimized

Steve...you want a history duel? Bring it.

Of course the Union Jack was burned and defaced...during a war.

I like Ronbo's critique...burn my flag/get your ass kicked.

Unfortunately, it seems many can't read...

There was no "kidnapping" the culprit agreed to the "punishment". These folks, all on their own, did far better in my view than any court or law could accomplish.

Personally I would have kicked the crap out of the guy, but the "right wing Vet" obviously has far better restraint than I do. Plus I don't see any indication that the culprit was a liberal, especially in light of the fact that he himself felt what he did was wrong and submitted himself to the punishment.

The flag (as well as our government) represents the people of the United States, and while the government has certainly failed in this role the flag has not. You wanna take a dump on the white house lawn, be my guest. Just try doing that to the flag when I'm around.

Funny how we don't burn anyone's flag in this country... Except our own, of course.

Burning any American flag is wrong IMO, but the flag in question was a flag that flew in combat where American soldiers died. It was also the property of the VFW. This "right wing vet" would have given a proper beat down to that clown. I praise those vets for their restraint.

A car history duel might be fun someday - anybody who can recognise a DBR1 is worth a pint in my book.

As for your teenage years(), I'm sure you are aware that lots of royal property (flags, carriages, horses, buildings, windows, etc) were destroyed/looted/burned for years (a decade or so) before the actual shooting war broke out.

If someone burns your flag they should expect to get their ass kicked.

Steve
