I thought you all might be interested in this update. I purchased an ERA Cobra with a FL title. The title had the car as a 1966 Ford, and the VIN was ERA446. I took the title into the local DMV office, told them I wanted collector plates/registration and left there paying my $150 plus change in fees and a temporary license tag. I did receive a MN title in the mail and the car continues to show the car as a 1966 Ford with the same VIN. No hassle, no inspection, no questions. All things went according to how I figured they would within the language of the laws/ordinances. Still waiting for my permanent plates, but I don't anticipate an issue since I got my title with 1966 registration.

Much like 66gtk, I bought a car from OK that was titled as a 66 Cobra. Paid the roughly 200 transfer fees here in MN and waited with my fingers crossed that I wouldn't get hammered with a "newer" kit car tax and have to put "normal" plates on it. Title just came in the mail, MN title with 66 Cobra and same 9 digit vin #. No plate yet, but I don't expect any issues with that now that the clear title is in hand.

That is awesome news!!! I hope for continued consistency in our state with relation to registering/titling cars with existing out of state and in state titles - especially with collector vehicle status!

I guess its my turn. I just had my first inspection here in Minnesota, but due to not having a VIN plate attached to the body, I failed. I should receive notice when they are ready to attach my VIN, but still unsure what it means as far as receiving a title. They did give me plates when I registered the vehicle and made me pay sales tax, but they only charged me sales tax on the purchase price of the kit and engine/transmission. I'm still expecting to have to pay much more. We'll see what happens...
