So, I got all the brackets done, except the emergency brake bracket and 2 little tabs for the brake lines at the rear. Got the rest done, so I'm declaring the chassis finished! Whew!!! Now for some cleanup and then its time to plan the next stage of the build. Also, I couldn't resist bending up a rollbar hoop and bolting it to the chassis, since I got the inboard rollbar bracket done. Oh, and it is sitting a 15 degrees rearward lean angle and it bolts in, just like the real deal, just in case you guys were wondering just how accurate I am, Lol! Enjoy...

Garey......you are one heck of a fabricator.......
what type of solder are you useing ??
is it a soft lead base or is it silver solder ??
and when you are done with the frame are
you going to paint it or polish it ??
and why on earth arent you doing this in full scale
so you could actually drive it when you are done..........

Thank you sir, I try... this is a warm up for the full size build in the not-too-distant future, Lol! I use garden variety soft solder, probably should use silver, but I don't. The frame will be dressed, primed and painted, just like the real deal. I have wanted to build a model of this car for years, but I needed to get my workshop and talent level up to par, first. Now, it's moving along nicely and it's really looking good, so I'm psyched!

It was a little while between posts, this week... had a touch of a cold, I was fighting with. Got a lot done today, though. The wife went to IKEA with the baby, so it was a nice, relaxing, productive day, Lol! I was able to get all of the square, support tubing in the rear finished, got the floor/seat supports done, the main hoop and supports done and the lower side tubes done. The lower side tubes still need to be tucked up against the bottom of the main hoop a little more and the rollbar hoop is a temporary one. The real one still has to be bent up and the rear support tied into the rear structure, but that's another day. The solder joints are not dressed, yet, but the frame is getting closer... Hey Garey looking sweet. Give those front hood tubes a bend up just behind the back cross one. The body actually sits above the cowl hoop and that's what holds it up.

It's kind of a hybrid, I guess. I started off with the intention of building a very exacting CSX replica, but as I've come along, I've used the Kirkham site for alot of reference, so now it's kind of morphed, a little. I guess you could say it's what I would build in a 1:1. Original in design, with updated parts that would make it better...

Hey Mick, thanks, it's really starting to look the part, now. I have to go back and take some critical measurements of the cowl hoop and the front, upper tube. I think the front tube is too high, because the hood tubes should be more horizontal, so something is off. The hood tubes on the prints don't show much of a bend at all, just a small bow as they run forward, which leads me to believe the front tube is too high. I need to go back and see. I understand the hood tubes and cross tubes define the hood opening and the body rests on and is wrapped around them, so it's a critical enough part that it needs to be right on the money. On the Kirkham forum, I just got a post from David Kirkham concerning the body tubes and an offer to CNC a 1/8th scale wood buck to form the body over! This build has just taken a big step in the right direction if I can get my hands on that! I'm going to PM him back this morning to open a conversation to that end. I know I may have some adjusting to do... the body tubes are close, but in 1/8th scale, being off a 64th is like being off an 8th in 1:1, which is alot, as you know. Trying to do exact bends and keep everything exactly right is tough, in this scale. Not too many CNC bending machines in 1/8th scale, Lol!
UPDATE: Well, I got home and promptly did some measuring and viola... the cowl hoop is too low... by 1/2", or 4" in scale! Massive mistake... I can only deduce that I assumed the measurements were from the bottom of the main frame tubes, when they should be from the top, hence the 4" discrepancy. Ouch! I took an 18" steel rule and layed it from the rear hoop, at the rollbar, forward, over the cowl and on to the front hood hoop and it clearly indicates in profile the cowl hoop and corresponding body tubes are indeed, too low. Not a complete disaster, but a minor setback, which I'll fix, this week... Just thought I'd fill you in...

Thanks, they look good on the model, but you should see the pile of scrap brass from all of the attempts, Lol! Not really, but they do require some bending and re-bending, then eyeballing, then re-bending, if you get my drift. I have a set of prints and a keen eye, so I've been fortunate, so far. In scale, it's tough, though and you have to be ingenious in your fabrication "machinery"... there are some common use tools I have used in "uncommon" ways to get things done.

Okay, so the mistake pointed out by my esteemed colleague, mickmate, was a good sized one and I thought, meh, I'll fix it later... I couldn't go forward tonight without fixing the problem, so here is a series of 7 photos of how I corrected the issue, along with some commentary to help it make sense... enjoy and thanks again, Mick!

As you read in the above post, the cowl hoop was too low by 1/2", which translates into 4" in scale... so off with the top of the cowl hoop and 3/8" down on the vertical tubes...
The aftermath...
I had to remove quite a bit from the front end... here are the vertical tubes being added to by 1/4", via pins and slightly longer top sections...
New top hoop being checked for fit...
And soldered in place...
After the correction, with everything back together and looking correct, now...
I knew something was off, when the hood tubes were pretty far from horizontal, but I wouldn't know how far off everything was until I was able to take some critical measurements this evening... It's all good now, though...
