The Gumball Rally (1976): Best movie line ever?
My DVD collection includes a number of car- and Cobra-related films, but of course the one that started it all for me (my Cobra madness, that is) was "The Gumball Rally."
It still amazes me to see an original 427 Cobra roadster and an original Ferrari 365 GTS/4 "Daytona Spyder" racing each other hard on public roads and through the L.A. river.
While this drive-in special certainly was no Oscar contender, there's no denying that this was one of the best lines ever in a movie... dontcha think?

Yes....but it was the accent that made it a great line. Say it in straight English and it is outright boring.

Very true. Raul Julia's delivery was perfect; the accent, the rhythm, the gestures, the inflection. It all came together to make a great line.

Oh, yes; You are so right. One of my all time favorite lines. And this line comes in handy so often! I used it a lot when I lived in Italy.

The accent is the key. "What isa behind me, isa not important."

Excellent!
That was perfect with my morning coffee
On a side note, when I'm getting up there in age, I would like to be like one of the guys in the Mercedes 300SL.

They used real Cobras
I interviewed the director, Chuck Bail. They rented two real 427s, painting them the same color but still managed to prang one (you can see it in one scene still driving with a bent grille cavity if you look close). One was rented from a LA policeman (yes, a cop with a 427 Cobra!). They fixed and repainted his car after filming. Somewhere there's a picture of one of the cars with a huge apparatus weighing maybe 500 lbs. on the front of the car to film it as it drives along. The director was once a stunt man. As I was interviewing him, a young man stuck his head in the office and let Chuck know he had gotten the lead in a movie. His name was Gary Busey.

Here is a clip from the movie when they were on the freeway...before they got into the river:
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Now as they are in the river:
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Notice the damage on the car before it enters the river that is not there after wards.

Why not post your interview with the director here. I'll dig up mine as well and we can compare notes.

"...young man"? How long ago was this interview?
Gary Busey is 66 years old now.

My favorite scene that I like to turn up is right when the race starts.
Hearing the Ferrari and Cobra reverberating off the buildings in Manhattan is incredible.
