I just ordered one of these from Northern Tool. I have a standard 2 car garage that is insulated, so I'm thinking I should be able to keep it nice and toasty. If I need to :)

Types of heat
As a rule of thumb:
1) if your garage is well insulated and you don't open the door/at least not frequently, Forced Air heat is acceptable. Slow to warm an area but system most are familiar with and provides uniform comfort. 2) if your garage is not insulated or you need to open the door frequently, look to radiant heat. does not heat the air but the objects within the range of the heater. The media for energy (propane, electric, nat. gas, wood, coal, oil, etc) is very dependent upon region. Do your research as to which is most economical in your area. It wasn't that bad Paul :D I ran my electric 240v heater from January - March, typically our coldest months. Kept it on 24 hours a day, that way objects in the garage didn't cool back down. I really don't recall the amount, but it wasn't so much more that I turned it off.

Two things you need to look out for. The heater you are showing, I think is NOT vented. This will build up an awful lot of moisture in the are you are working. Second, watch out for Northern Tool. I used to do business with them, however I found out I was getting all kinds of crap in the mail that was coming from other companies that "share" their mailing list with Northern Tool. NT also "rents" their mailing list also. When I called them, they told me that is was right in the fine print on their web site. I no longer do business with them. Tom |

I have not had experience personally, but my son's friend put 2 of them in his 2 stall garage/entertainment area. There was plenty of heat, but in the winter you felt like you were walking into a sauna. He had to put a humidifier in to correct that. If you can, see if you can get one of these heaters that vent through the wall. I think you will be happier. Tom |

My garage is insulated 24x22, attached to the house, and stays above freezing (upper 40's, low 50's) in the coldest outside temperature without any heat.
I use this heater: http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/3VU36?Pid=search. I plug it into my TIG welder receptacle. I only turn it on when I'm in the garage, and it heats the place amazingly quickly...literally in just a few minutes. Negligible affect to the electric bill. Rodger |
