Waterford Speedbowl 6-18-2010
Hey Guys:
Every Friday night Waterford Speedbowl ( www.speedbowl.com ) has a cruise night and 100 foot drag races. All you need to race is a car and a helmet.
Recently "The Bowl" paved the lot from the road to the pits so the worry of dust is now gone. While I don't plan on doing any drag racing, I would not mind getting together with other Cobra owners from western RI and eastern Connecticut. Is anyone out there interested in dropping in for the cruise to show-off our cars?
The weather Friday is supposed to be warm and clear.

Rick and I were talking about a drive to Marcus on Saturday 6/19. I was going to post that soon.
Both 15 and I-95 and parts of I-91 are currently being resurfaced and paved. I would not recommend relying on any of those routes to get around CT in a Cobra. Atleast a trip to Marcus would rely on clear roads and a bit of I84 that I know is good.

Are you saying that I95 between New Haven and Waterford is somewhere between milling and paving?

West Haven is. And New Haven is pretty rough before the bridge. I'd stay off that if it were me.
Milford section of I-95 both directions is terrible.
Hamden / Tunnel area of 15 is the worst.

Waterford Speedbowl is NOT the place you want to bring your Cobra. The rocks in the pit area are the size of cookies.

Rich & Jay:
Where is the place I want to bring my Cobra? Which are the roads I want to drive on? Where is everybody going Friday evening?

We don't do much on Friday night because of early work commitments on Saturday. I drive whenever I can for as long as I can. Nice cruise night on Monday at Stop and Shop on Rt 5 in North Haven. All cars are welcome...nice big clean lot. Waterford is a great place to go on Saturday night, just don't drive the Cobra.

If I have it in me I am going to drive up the BTP and visit the Hooters Cruise on Friday night. Of course I am leaving from Wallingford so I don't have to drive on the roads under work now.
It will require some night driving...

Wow, this sounds like a blast! Just read all about it on their site. This Friday is a mustang shoot out ( which I also own). The thought of I 95 for an hour with my 4 speed and big block does not sound good, also the pit area another had mentioned sounds not to promising...maybe I will take the Stang. I have a tentative appt. to get an oil line installed in my house, it will depend on that unfortunately. Bob, are you definitely going?

Just got back from the Speedbowl. The trip from the road to the cruise area was completely paved. The drive from New Haven to Waterford was on nothing but good road with moderate traffic. The cruise attracked about 20 cars. I wouldn't take the Snake unless other were going to be there as well.
The 100 foot drags attracked lots of cars. There was everything from a Willys on steroids to 4 cylinder stockers. Lots of Mustangs and lots of trucks. Considering it didn't cost a cent it was a great show.

Good news is the paving on RT15 N/S looks to be nearly complete. But I95 South of New Haven is still like dodging bullets.

The Speedbowl has been on the brink of bankruptcy for several years now, and remains one of the most primative speedways in the northeast. Even though they paved the road in, most of the pit area remains unpaved. Not a big deal for fender banging stock cars, but not a nice deal for Cobras. Lots of fun to compete there however. Take a walk out behind the track sometime and you'll see what I mean. I really love the place...was a competitor there in the seventies and eighties.

Rich:
Who cares? I'm not telling owners to drive their cars in the pits. I just thought the "Bowl" would be a convenient place for some Connecticut and Rhode Island owners to get together. So I was wrong, the only Cobra owner there was me. Hey, I tried. For the record, if you're just interested in the cruise, the "Bowl" is fine. It's paved from the road to the cruise area and the show is terrific, especially for zero cost. Just watching the 10 second burn-outs was amusing.
Last night my better half and I went to Marcus Dairy. Five Cobras showed-up, me (SPF), Bob S. (ERA) and three BDRs (Jay, Rick and I'm not sure). Took Route 25, to the Merritt to Route 95 home. Going home we encounterd a sobriety check (passed), a very nasty Route 25, a bumpy ramp between 25 and the Merritt and paving on I95. Does this mean the Marcus Dairy cruise is off the table?
