Default Yankee Magazine: Fall Foliage Drives

" Yankee magazine has been celebrating NewEngland for three-quarters of a century, but even after all these years, there's still room for surprise. In its 75th anniversary issue, on newsstands in August, the magazine named Kent, Conn., population 3,000, the best town in New England for fall foliage."

Another way to view the Foliage

Berkshire East Canopy Tours
Charlemont, Mass.

" New England's longest zipline "is breathtaking during the fall color change," Smith says. The attraction, about 70 miles east of Albany, N.Y., offers three options, ranging from a family-friendly introductory area to the heart-pounding Valley Jumping Tour course with the final run stretching a half-mile. 413-339-6617;"

When we lived there we tried to take Columbus Day weekend and go to New Hampshire White Mountains. We stayed at the Mount Washington Hotel Bretton Woods a couple of times. Great day drive up there, nice place to stay, good color and an easy drive back home.

In Colorado we do the drive on the Peak to Peak highway. Colorado aspens tend to be yellow and not much reds. Oaks and maples definitely make for better quality leaf peeping. One of the US top 10 is on the western slope so might be worth checking out.

Twobjshelbys,
I'd have to agree with your opinion on the Mt Washington area, but personally favor the I-93 side of the hill. Here is an especially good link for your memory buds to savor; http://www.franconianotch.org ...and my favorite place to stay? http://www.sunsethillhouse.com The view over the White Mountains from their dining room is breathtaking.
North of Bangor Maine near Baxter State Park is especially gorgeous too. The blue spruces of that area make the colors stand out even better than the pines of NH.
Don, I had a '68 290 AMX, wish I still had it!

Have not followed the topic too closely, but as a general comment, the leaves are turning this year earlier than the norm, due to the summer weather:

Colorado too. When I drove to Vegas over I70 Vail Pass is already at 100%. Our Denver area Shelby Club is planning a leaf peeping tour on the Peak-to-Peak for 2-Oct, it might be too late.

I think it is going to be a real quick season for peak foliage with the lack of rain, seems the leaves are turning and falling in about day...

If your traveling in the southern VT area, west of Brattleboro towards Manchester, a favorite place is Johnny Seesaw's , located east of Bromely Mountain on Route 11

The Legend:

Johnny Seesaw's was built in 1920 by Russian logger, Ivan Sesow. Sesow called his enterprise "The Wonderview Log Pavilion" and began the legend with his wild Saturday night dances, homemade moonshine and rumored sin cabins out back. Throughout the roaring 20's, thanks to Prohibition, few lawmen and many loggers, "the Legend of Johnny Seesaw's" continued to grow. Around 1930, Sesow apparently bet the dance hall in one of his famous poker games, and lost. The buildings were sold and remained unused for some eight years.

In 1938 Bill and Mary Parrish bought the run-down property, constructed bunkrooms, installed plumbing, electricity, a kitchen and central furnace, and renamed one of the first ski lodges in the United States "Johnny Seesaw's." For the next four decades Johnny Seesaw's catered to thousands of skiers including a President of the United States, the first aviator to cross the Atlantic, Charles Lindbergh, and a bevy of famous and infamous personalities. At the beginning of World War II the concept of army ski troops originated at Johnny Seesaw's and eventually became the 10th Mountain Division. For forty years, Seesaw's, a renowned Ivy League hangout, offered lodging by referral only. If you didn't know someone who had stayed here, you didn't stay here.

In 1980 the lodge was purchased by Gary Okun. Now open to almost everyone, Johnny Seesaw's still offers the ambiance and magic of a twenties roadhouse. Join us and become part of the Legend.
