My Cobra, being a small block car, has the ERA sidepipes just under the edge of the body and slightly outside so did not require the shields. Most of the big block cars have pipes sticking out further. Another piece of info that I got from the DMV emissions guys is that all composite vehicles must meet CO level of 5.0 and HC of 500. Also found out that they will run on the rolls and be checked at idle. The engine in mine is a 68 302 stroker at 347ci. Also had a conversation with them about test dates. I told them there was no way I would drive my car in the winter to be tested and that I couldn't drive it between end of November and before begining of April as I have no insurance. Their reaction was "You can make an appointment after the layover period and pay the late fee." I told them that was rediculous. They also want proof of the layover period in order to test. When I checked my VIN in the emissions data bank it came up July 2007, no problem.
I have the Edlebrock performer cam and heads and might have to change the Holly for a smaller carb to pass the test but I'll try it as is first. I think we should all keep each other informed as to where the best test places are and test results.

The test standards you mention are consistent with the initial emissions test on the Cobra:

For the 351W: ASM Emissions Results:

HC / CO / NO
Max Limit: 484.0 / 5.09 / 3182.0

Tested : 99.4 / 1.99 / 189.3

Looks like I am still well below the current max limit that was given to you, which should not have changed with the new test procedures.

The 351W was built by Don Scott, new owner of Classic Roadsters II. Has a Holly 600 with the Edelbrock performer manifold.

My test date is 7-26-2005, agree there has to be another option made available for those vehicles which are not insured/driven in the winter, other than paying a late fee. Will contact the emissions office and ask the question.

Guys:

My Cobra was registered here in CT as a COMPO (Composite Vehicle) built in 1993 and has, like yours, the Composite vehicle VIN plate. The car was registered 10+ years ago initially. So all is "Legal" in that respect.

To the best of my knowledge, there has never been an emissions test done on the car, or if so, I have no sticker or report to that effect from the previous owner. The engine is a 1966 FE C6ME 410 S (Thunderbird) block.

Since the car is 11 years old as a composite assembly, and the engine block is pushing 37 years of age, will this car need to be emissions tested? As I understand the exemptions, it seems that it will need to be tested every two years.

Can't explain why your car was not tested, or if it was, why you have no record, but I would think you will hear from DMV sometime in the future. Did you plug your VIN number into the CT emissions site?

Subject: Test Dates: Vehicles not driven in the Winter

Would appreciate having the test date policy clarified regarding vehicles not driven in the winter months. For speciality vehicles, sports cars, composites, etc., it is a common practice to suspend the liability insurance for the winter months while the vehicles are in storage and not driven. As a general statement, the storage dates are from November 1st to April 15th, but would vary according to the owner's desire. By the nature of these vehicles, they are not driven during inclement weather such as rain, snow and ice. Also, the roadsters do not have a top.

Can the vehicle be tested prior to the scheduled date, if the scheduled date is in the winter months, or assigned a non-winter date at the request of the owner. Looking for an alternative which does not require payment of a late fee.

Default Determination if testing is required

Excerpt from a previous posting received from the ctemissions program manager, which indicates the year used for the vehicle on the registration will determine whether an inspection is needed:

However, to re-state, the determination of whether your vehicle needs to be emissions tested is based upon its registration, for example a 1925 Model T with a 1974 engine that is registered as a composite vehicle in 1999 would need to be tested because its registration date is as a 1999 model year. For your particular vehicle, you need to check the registration to determine if you need to bring it in.

CT Emmissions testing for composites is slightly different than for normal cars. When using the CT composite ID, the system will recognize as a composite and use the current "last date applicable" ie 1978 specs for testing purposes. When you get your letter, you go to the test station and will have to do an ASM test (Dyne). If the vehicle fits comfortably, off you go. If not, you will get a 2 stage test at idle and at a held 2500 rpm. I understand that if it is close, you can come back for a retest. If it is way off, you can request a one time waiver for 2 years without the $660 fee as the composites have no factory emissions system. This last part is up for question as the policy was fluid when I checked in October, but came from the DMV Emmissions dept head.

Thanks Don, best clarification I have seen on the DMV approach to testing Composites, even after asking the ctemissions Program Manager.

Now it makes sense referencing the specs used for my Cobra when tested at the time of being registered.

Had you heard anything on being able to reschedule a test date from the winter months, when the vehicle is in storage, to Spring/Summer/Fall , without payment of the late fee ?

The pictures in my gallery were supplied by the previous owner.

In the bottom left corner of the windshield is a CT Emissions pass sticker.

Either it will pass or he bribed someone, which I doubt.

Capfel Is that Jimmy Morrisons ex car? He did run it thru emmissions, but it originally had a small block Chevy when first built. He switched away from the dark side after enduring constant harassment about it. Did the switch 2 or 3 years ago, whats the date on the sticker? A mild 428 in good tune will pass emmissions no problem. My 428 was stronger than Jimmys, and it passed ok.

As far as inspections goes, I have the receipt for the engine and rear for my car,but not for the tranny.Any do I really have to track done a vin # and receipt for this tranny !!!

Don,

Yes it is. I bought it this past June. I take it you have been to common events as you live in the same general area as he. It is a great car.

I have build pictures of it with the Chevy motor but am not really sure when it was modified to the 428FE. I thought it was more then 2-3 years ago but he said it had 2000 miles on the engine which would make the 2-3 years accurate. There was 5100 miles on the odometer when I bought.

I have the CT Emissions pass report in the glove box but the sticker must have come off the car as soon as the program was terminated. I'll have to look. I would consider the 428FE in the mild, well tuned, category and think passing CT Emissions will be OK.

Jim's been helpful with my inquiries which have been too many caused by years driving "family type cars".
